Iris voice control app is dev’s 8hr attempt at Siri for Android
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
Apple’s Siri system is one of the flagship features of the iPhone 4S, but a team of Android developers reckoned they could match the voice command system – or at least rival it – with just eight hours work. Dexetra came up with Iris for Android, a tongue-in-cheek reversal of the Siri name, and pulling together Android’s existing voice input and text-to-speech capabilities with some online search and a dash of arch humor.

Sony Music Unlimited arrives for Android tablets, bearing gifts of unlimited music
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsSonyGoogleAndroid
It's been a week of upgrades for Sony Tablet S owners. First came news of the PlayStation Store's arrival and now comes confirmation that Sony's Music Unlimited service is available, as well. Yesterday, the company announced that its music streaming service has finally made its way to the Tablet S and other Android slates, a little more than four months after launching on Google-laced handsets. The basics remain the same: $4 per month for a basic subscription or $10 per month for premium service, though Tablet S owners can take advantage of a 180-day free trial, in case they still have their hesitations. Stream past the break for the full PR, or grab the app for yourself at the source link, ...

Gmail redesign leaked by, er, Google
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Gmail is about to roll out with a massive redesign but we weren't meant to see it yet. However, thanks to an over eager Google-ite, it seems that a private video detailing the new look and features went public on YouTube for a while, before being taken down (officially, at least).
It seems that the main new design is based on the Preview theme that's already available in Gmail, but with a stack of new options, to boot.
The look is now "as clean, simple and as intuitive as possible". The active screen will adapt to fit the size of your window, and you can set specific display densities. In addition, the side bar can be manipulated to your own specifications - hiding labels and bringing chat h...

From Steve Jobs Biography: Android Is A Stolen Product
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleGoogleAndroid
Walter Isaacson biography on Steve Jobs will go on sale from Monday, but Associated Press got a copy of it before us. They posted some excerpts from the book which says that Steve Jobs felt that Android is a stolen product and he is willing to wage a war on it.
“I will spend my last dying breath if I need to, and I will spend every penny of Apple’s $40 billion in the bank, to right this wrong. I’m going to destroy Android, because it’s a stolen product. I’m willing to go thermonuclear war on this.”
“I don’t want your money. If you offer me $5 billion, I won’t want it. I’ve got plenty of money. I want you to stop using our ideas in Android, that’s all I want.”

Motorola DROID BIONIC to get Ice Cream Sandwich update
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsMotorolaGoogleDROID BIONICAndroid 4.0
It is hard to believe that after all of those months that Verizon customers were eagerly waiting, the Motorola DROID BIONIC could be wiped out by the announcement of the upcoming Motorola DROID RAZR. Many owners of the DROID BIONIC feel slighted after Motorola showed off the extremely thin and sexy design of the DROID RAZR, not to mention the Super AMOLED display that does away with the often criticized pentile display found on the older of the two DROID models. And the Motorola DROID RAZR will be a little faster with a dual-core 1.2GHz processor under the hood.
Good news for Motrorola DROID BIONIC owners
Yesterday, we reported that the Motorola DROID RAZR would be receiving an update to the...

Ice Cream Sandwich for Motorola DROID RAZR landing in early 2012
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsMotorolaGoogleDROID RAZRAndroid 4.0
Motorola’s senior vice president of portfolio and product management Alain Mutricy confirmed on Wednesday that the DROID RAZR, announced Tuesday for Verizon Wireless, will receive an Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update early next year. Mutricy explained that the phone was designed to run Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), which will be installed when it hits the market, but that Motorola has already created a time frame for an Android 4.0 roll-out, Pocket-lint said. Without support for NFC, however, features such as Android Beam will not be operational. The DROID RAZR is equipped with a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, a large Super AMOLED Advanced display with a qHD resolution, an 8-megapixel camera a...

HTC undecided about Ice Cream Sandwich update
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsHTCGoogleAndroid 4.0
TechRadar has spoken to HTC about the new Android 4.0 release to see when the firm will be updating its phones to the next level of Google's OS.
We expected the Taiwanese firm to be talking up all the new functionality Ice Cream Sandwich will offer, but it's remained strangely non-committal about the new software:
"We are excited about the latest update for Android, Ice Cream Sandwich, and are currently reviewing its features and functionality to determine our upgrade plans," said a spokesperson.
"Our goal for Android updates is to give every customer an improved user experience, which means balancing each phone's unique hardware, HTC Sense experience and the Android kernel."

HTC responds to Android 4.0, may pass on upgrades
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsHTCGoogleAndroid 4.0
HTC has issued an official response (embedded below) to the launch of Google’s Android 4.0 operating system. Although the launch centered on rival Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus hardware, which will also be first to market, HTC has acknowledged that its existing customers will be keen to get their hands on the new features announced by Google. However, the company has not offered any timeframe for when the operating system upgrades, which have traditionally taken months to arrive after Google has posted the source code for the OS.
HTC’s statement reads:
"We are excited about the latest update for Android, Ice Cream Sandwich, and are currently reviewing its features and functionality to determine our...

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is known for his sweaty on stage antics and for his comments about competitors’ products. Ballmer is back at it again and is blasting Android on usability and saying that consumers need to be a computer scientists to figure out how to use an Android phone. Google Search to be encrypted for signed-in users
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Google announced today that it will be stepping up security on its search feature for signed-in users. These users will now get an SSL encrypted search experience by default, which means that their search terms and results can’t be intercepted by hackers or nosy network admins. This will be especially important for those that often use public unsecured internet connections, such as WiFi hotspots at cafes.
SSL encryption was introduced to Gmail back in January of last year and Google has already been offering https://encrypted.google.com as a beta service. Encryption has also been available as an option for other major platforms such as Twitter and Facebook. In Google’s search implementation,...
