Google Releases 'Ice Cream Sandwich' Source Code
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid 4.0
Google on Monday finally released the source code for Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich.
But on the Google Forums, Jean-Baptiste M. "JBQ" Queru, a software engineer on the Android Open-Source Project, warned that "this is a large push," so developers should expect that "it will take some time to complete".
"If you sync before it's done, you'll get an incomplete copy that you won't be able to use, so please wait for us to give the all-clear before you sync," Queru wrote.
The source code is Android 4.0.1, which is the version that will be released on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
The release also includes the source code for Honeycomb, but "since Honeycomb was a little incomplete, we want everyone t...

Secret Google X labs may sell driverless car tech, more
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Google has a secret facility that could lead to commercial uses of driverless cars and other high technology, sources uncovered late Sunday. According to a New York Times report, one such project involves a driverless car. An unnamed source said the car would be built in the US, and could be subsidized with ads that played in front of a driver for local businesses as they drive by.
Another, somewhat related undertaking at Google X involves robots. Robots could, for example, replace humans in the photographing of streets for Google Maps.
The Google X team includes Sebastian Thrun, one of the top robotics and artificial intelligence experts in the world. He is also a professor of computer scie...

Gingerbread update for LG Optimus 3D starts rolling out next week
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsLGGoogleAndroid 2.3Optimus 3D
Remember that early Gingerbread ROM for the LG Optimus 3D? Sure, it was in a state too crude to be used on a daily basis, but it was good for one thing, namely spoiling the surprise by revealing what goodies the upcoming update is about to bring.
Well, the Gingerbread update for the LG Optimus 3D is now officially starting to roll out next week, November 21 to be precise. Europeans who own and unlocked version of the smartphone will be the first to try it out, yet additional markets and handset variations will be added to the list by the year's end.
What the Gingerbread update adds is pretty much what we already know thanks to the aforementioned leak. Editing footage on the Optimus 3D will b...

Here we are over two months later and users are reporting left and right that the upgrade is once again available to them. Users should get a notification on their devices when the update is ready to be downloaded and installed, or they can manually check through the Settings app on the phone itself.

Firefox 8 for Android released, brings security enhancements and more
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
If that stock internet browser on your Android smartphone does not live up to your expectations, you are probably using one of its numerous alternatives. But even if it seemingly gets the job done, it is always a good idea seeing what the substitutes are, as they often come loaded with goodies you may have never thought you'd use.
Firefox for Android, one of the most popular alternatives to that built-in web browser, has just been updated to version 8, which brings along a set of both minor and major improvements. A Master Password feature has been included in the app's latest release and lets you encrypt the usernames and passwords that the browser stores onto your device. Another new addit...

Google to discontinue Gmail app for BlackBerry this month
Like UnlikeFiled in: RIM BlackBerryGoogle
Gmail users who happen to own a BlackBerry smartphone might not like hearing this, but we have to break the bad news anyway. In a statement made on the Google Apps blog page, Google announced that it will end support for the Gmail App for BlackBerry on November 22. Furthermore, the app will not be available for download beyond this date.
Fortunately, those who have the application already installed on their BlackBerry handset may continue using it for as long as they wish. Those who do not, however, are advised to access their Gmail inbox via the service's web interface.
The reason behind the decision is said to be the fact that Google is switching its focus over to the Gmail web UI, which i...

Google VP Bradley Horowitz responds to Mark Zuckerberg's Google+ comments
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Bradley Horowitz, Google's VP of Product, said "we are delighted to be underestimated" in response to Mark Zuckerberg's comments during an interview with Bloomberg on the new Google+ pages for businesses. When asked whether his service was in direct competition with Facebook, Horowitz focused on Google's plans, which are to gain more knowledge about Google users across all its services, rather than how the services compare. Horowitz claims the personal user information gained through Google+ can help it improve the level of service it gives across all products, and described that scenario as a "fantastic success." Horowitz also took a moment to discuss the way the media pits Google and Faceb...

Barnes & Noble asked Justice Department to go after Microsoft in response to Android patent lawsuits
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftGoogleBarnes & NobleAndroid
Microsoft's strategy of demanding patent license fees from major Android device makers has been resoundingly successful in recent months, but that doesn't mean it's not controversial: the Wall Street Journal says Barnes & Noble has asked the Justice Department for an antitrust investigation into Redmond's attempts to "kill off" Android devices from smaller players with license fees and lawsuits. B&N told the government over the summer that "Microsoft's willingness to bully small players with expensive litigation raises a substantial barrier to entry" because only big companies can afford to pay the license fees. Unfortunately, we don't know how much Microsoft asks in fees, so we can't really...

Microsoft chasing down Huawei for Android patent license agreement
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftHuaweiGoogleAndroid
Microsoft is chasing down Huawei in search of a patent licensing agreement, The Guardian reported on Tuesday. “Yes, Microsoft has come to us,” Huawei Devices chief marketing officer Victor Xu told The Guardian. ”We always respect the intellectual property of companies. But we have 65,000 patents worldwide too. We have enough to protect our interests. We are a very important stakeholder in Android.” Xu also said that “negotiations are in progress” with Microsoft, which takes home an estimated $444 million annually from Android royalties. Microsoft has a cross-licensing agreement with Samsung and has similar deals with HTC, ViewSonic and other Android device vendors. It is expected that Micros...

Samsung Galaxy S II treated to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, hats off to MIUI ROM
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsSamsungGoogleGalaxy S IIAndroid 4.0
The Samsung Galaxy S II and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich? To us that sounds like a killer combination, but while others would probably have to wait until early 2012 when Samsung is expected to roll out the ICS update, you can have it now if you dare flash the MIUI ROM on your S II.
The crafty developers behind one of the most popular mods for Android, have brought ICS, but it's not exactly in its vanilla form. You'd still get MIUI's signature looks and customization and not the neon glow of Android 4.0, so while you lose the UI elements, the functionality is there.

Google+ Pages announced for businesses

This week brands, businesses, bands, and more are being welcomed back to Google+, provided they didn’t get offended after having gotten kicked out several weeks ago, in an initiative known officially as Google+ Pages. As Bradley Horowitz, VP of Product for Google+ notes, “As most of you know, we “kicked out the brands” in the early going on Google+… Not because we don’t love them (we do!) but because we wanted to create the right experience for users, as well as the brands themselves.” Will the Google-based social networking powerhouse be able to gather the brands to its bosom?

HTC talks patent deals to fight Apple, Android 4.0 updates
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleHTCGoogleAndroid 4.0
HTC outlined some of its Android plans on Monday that included both the courtroom and its products. In a far-ranging briefing, the company's CEO Peter Chou told Reuters his company was "open-minded" to the prospect of buying patents to escalate its fight with Apple. There weren't any specific plans, he said.
The company has so far had a tough time in legal battles with Apple, being found in violation in one complaint and having other attempts shot down. It has only made small gestures towards improving its ability to contest Apple's claims, buying S3 after a patent win and borrowing from Google and Motorola for countersuits.
In extra comments, Chou added that the company would push more into...
