OS X Lion security flaw allows anyone to change your password
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleMac OS X 10.7
Security blog Defense in Depth has found a glaring security flaw in OS X Lion that enables hackers to change the password of any user on a machine running Lion. “[While] non-root users are unable to access the shadow files directly, Lion actually provides non-root users the ability to still view password hash data,” Patrick Dunstan from Defense in Depth explained in a recent blog post. The result is that anyone could use a simple Python script, created by Dunstan himself, to discover a user’s password. It gets worse. Reportedly, OS X Lion does not require its users to enter a password to change the login credentials of the current user. That means typing the command: “dscl localhost -passwd ...

iPhone 5 jailbreak should be pretty easy
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 4s
At today's MyGreatFest jailbreaking convention, master hacker P0sixninja announced that a jailbreak should be coming pretty quickly to the iPhone 5, in a far shorter amount of time than was necessary for the iPad 2 jailbreak. The good news is all thanks to the Chronic Dev Team, which has found 5 bootrom exploits in the A5 chip which powers both the iPad 2 and the iPhone 5.
A reliable jailbreak proved hard to come by with the A5 and the iPad 2, because the bootrom is found inside the A5 chip and required a lot of hard work to reverse-engineer and find the exploits. That's why it ended up taking about 4 months to find a reliable jailbreak for the iPad 2. However, since then, the Chronic Dev T...

Apple ranks second in brand value, study claims
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
Apple has leaped ahead in rank to become the second most valuable brand in the world, an interim 2011 Brand Finance study claims. Although the worth of a brand is difficult to quantify, Brand Finance's latest metrics put Apple up 33 percent to $39.3 billion. Leading the list is Google, which rose 9 percent to just under $48.3 billion.
The new chart puts Apple ahead of several companies for the first time, including Microsoft, IBM, Walmart and General Electric. Microsoft in fact slipped 9 percent in results to slot just below Apple at approximately $39 billion. Walmart dropped two spots to take fifth place, while IBM and General Electric held firm in their positions.
The overall value of the ...

China Mobile has already gotten a positive answer on a TD-LTE iPhone from Apple
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 4
China is one of the key markets for Apple - after all it has the most customers in the world and smartphone usage is booming. Cupertino has opened a couple of official Apple Stores in the country, there seem to be plenty of unofficial Apple retailers and now China Mobile, the world’s largest carrier, seems to be close to getting a deal bringing it a 4G TD-LTE version of the iPhone.
“China Mobile and Apple hope to find a solution for close collaboration,” China Mobile chairman Wang Jianzhou said in an interview. “We discussed this issue with Apple. We hope Apple will produce a new iPhone with TD-LTE. We have already got a positive answer from Apple.”
China Mobile currently doesn’t offer the i...

iPhone 5 to have radical new design according to Case-Mate images
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 4s
The iPhone 5 hasn’t been announced yet, but that has not stopped accessory makers from posting upcoming cases for the highly anticipated handset. Case-Mate has published a page on its website with six different case designs for the new iPhone 5, and we’re loving the radical new body shown in the images. We’ve heard tons of speculation that the iPhone 5 will be thinner and lighter than the current model and these cases suggest it will have tapered edges and a slim profile as well. Finally, the images appear to an aluminum back on the fifth-generation iPhone, which also jibes with earlier reports. The iPhone 5 is expected to be available in the United States in October, so we’re not surprised ...

TSMC secures A6, A7 SoC contracts, Apple divorces Samsung?
Like UnlikeFiled in: SamsungApple
We’ve already heard talk about Apple divorcing Samsung as its chip producer for Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), but now Taiwanese daily DigiTimes adds more fuel to the fire saying that Cupertino has signed a foundry partnership with TSMC. The new foundry is expected to be responsible for making not only the A6 chip expected to land on the Apple iPhone 6, but also the next-gen A7 chip. TSMC will produce the chips using 28nm and 20nm technology.
While the rumor about Samsung getting ditched has persisted, there was wide disbelief that Apple would kick off orders with TSMC before 2012. The Korean phone maker single-handedly helped Apple develop and roll out the A4 and A5 chip...

Apple brings Samsung lawsuit to the UK
Like UnlikeFiled in: SamsungApple
Apple has quietly filed a lawsuit as of this past Monday in the UK's High Court. The move is a countersuit to a lawsuit Samsung filed against Apple in the country back in June. Exactly which patents are at question hasn't been specified in either case, however.
Apple has recently sued Samsung in the latter's home market of Korea and even more recently brought this legal war to Japan as well.
Apple was recently awarded a preliminary ban on Samsung selling Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablets in Germany during a trial, which was upheld after Samsung appealed it. The Korean company launched another formal appeal in a higher court.

Sprint iPad on the way alongside iPhone 5?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesTabletsAppleiPadiPhone 4s
We know that the iPhone 5 should be coming to Sprint in October but the third-largest mobile operator may also be getting the Apple tablet to go along with it.
According to 9to5Mac, Apple has prepared a 3G iPad which will be compatible with Sprint’s network. This is different than the Verizon 3G iPad but the report doesn’t mention whether there will be WiMax 4G support or not. I don’t picture Apple being the biggest fan of WiMax but I think that having 4G in an iPad could be a very cool thing.
The AT&T version has a 3G iPad but I wouldn’t be surprised to see the next version have AT&T’s 4G. The issue is that having 4G on each network will require different radios and Apple generally doesn’t ...

ASA decrees iPhone 4 is thinner than Samsung Galaxy S II
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungAppleiPhone 4Galaxy S II
For a while, the Samsung Galaxy S II supposedly claimed the title of world’s thinnest smartphone – thinner than even the iPhone 4. We all just assumed this was true but Apple knew the real truth and it continued to advertise the iPhone 4 with this title in commercials. So, the U.K.’s Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) received a complaint on the matter and decided to step in to solve things once and for all.
Let’s get to the nitty-gritty: The iPhone 4 has a flat, uniform design, which means everywhere you look on the device is going to be exactly 9.3 mm. The Samsung Galaxy S II does not have a uniform design, particularly noticeable with the odd bulge on the bottom side. At its thinnest p...

Apple may surprise with MacBook Pro refresh later this month

Apple is planning to sneak in a modest refresh of its high-end MacBook Pro line later this month according to a new rumor. AppleInsider cites multiple anonymous sources in claiming that Apple’s MacBook Pro line will receive a light bump in late September that delivers marginal speed improvements to the laptops’ Intel Core i-series processors and little else. Intel’s just-announced 2.4GHz, 2.5GHz and 2.7GHz quad-core Core i7 processors are expected to replace the current 2.0GHz, 2.2GHz and 2.3GHz chipsets found in Apple’s current 15 and 17-inch MacBook Pro models, the report says. Apple may also update the current 2.7GHz CPU in the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Intel’s new dual-core 2.8GHz Core i7...

Ex-Samsung Electronics manager pleads guilty in insider trading probe with Apple iPad components
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsSamsungAppleiPad
A former employee of Samsung Electronics said he indeed supplied screen components shipping information to a hedge fund manager about the upcoming Apple iPad last year.
Samsung is making some of the screens and other gear for the first iPad, so Suk-Joo Hwang was lured by promises for flying models on a private jet during weekend trips to Iceland in exchange for insider info about Apple's upcoming disruption device. We kid, but Wall Street somehow got under the guy's skin, and after 14 years of humble work for Samsung Electronics USA, he was trapped by the necessity to install a granite countertop in his old kitchen.
The guy has been granted immunity from the New York prosecutor, in order to ...

Apple wants to press pause on patent suits, calls Motorola a lame duck
Like UnlikeFiled in: AppleMotorola
In what could turn out to be a very expensive lesson in minding one's mouth, Apple plans to use Google's and Motorola's own words against them in court. Over the weekend, Cupertino's lawyers filed two motions to stay in patent-related litigation with Moto, claiming the OEM's pending merger renders its patent suits indefensible. According to Apple's legal team, the proposed Motorola Mobility acquisition effectively transfers patent control over to Google, an allegation that public-facing statements from both companies seem to corroborate. Citing the potential waste of resources and probable reversal of future pre-merger settlements, the house that Jobs built is hoping to hold off on the court...

Apple files motions for temporarily disabling Motorola to sue it because of the Google buyout
Like UnlikeFiled in: AppleMotorolaGoogle
Apple, banking on the ambiguity of who exactly should be suing it for patent infringement after Google's acquisition of Motorola, filed motions to halt the lawsuits that Motorola started against it.
The first case should be starting in April of next year, and by that time it's still not clear if the deal will have passed all regulatory scrutiny and paperwork.
"Apple should not have to face the threat of an injunction based on the claims of a party that now has no standing to bring those claims.", say Cupertino's lawyers, and "Apple will be expending enormous resources litigating claims against a party that does not have standing".
How does Motorola, which is still an independent company unti...

iPhone 5 hitting UK October 21 in 16 GB and 32 GB varieties?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 4s
An O2 sales rep has let slip that the iPhone 5 will be landing on October 21, which lines up quite nicely with earlier rumours we had heard from Best Buy. In addition to that, a Vodafone page temporarily listed 16 GB and 32 GB models in both black and white, which are some details we hadn’t heard much of yet. While neither of these hints are anything conclusive, it reaffirms most speculation that we’ll be seeing an announcement in the next couple of weeks.
The iOS 5 device software is just about ready to roll, and with it a handful of new features, like an unobtrusive notification system, while the hardware may include an 8 megapixel camera and a larger screen. Even those details are on sha...

Apple Says Google Acquisition of Motorola Nullifies Patent Lawsuits

You might have been thinking, “What happens to Apple’s lawsuits against Motorola and its patent infringements now that Google is taking over?” Good question! Apple has decided to file motions to stay its two patent lawsuits against Motorola, stating that the DROID maker has ceded control of its patents over to Google.
