Apple reportedly has no plans to bring Siri to older devices
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
Apple will not bring its virtual personal assistant Siri to older devices, a new report claims to confirm. MSComputerVideos founder Michael Steeber on Tuesday posted an email conversation that allegedly took place between “someone who contacted Apple with a bug report” and Apple. In the exchange, a suggestion is posed to Apple asking the company to consider offering Siri to owners of older devices as part of a special paid update. “Siri only works on iPhone 4S and we currently have no plans to support older devices,” Apple’s engineering department reportedly responded. Based on technology from Apple’s Siri acquisition and Nuance Communications, Siri is a sought-after virtual personal assista...

Sony CEO: We're building 'a different kind of TV set,' just like Apple
Like UnlikeFiled in: SonyApple
All eyes have been on Apple to reinvent the television set, but Sony CEO Howard Stringer recently confirmed that Sony, too, is working on re-imagining the TV. “There’s a tremendous amount of R&D going into a different kind of TV set,” Stringer said during a breakfast hosted recently by The Wall Street Journal. “We can’t continue selling TV sets [as we currently do]. Every TV set we all make loses money.” Stringer said that he has “no doubt” that Steve Jobs had intentions of designing a brand-new kind of television but said that “it will take a long time to transition to a new form of television.” Read on for more.

AT&T remains the preferred carrier for iPhone 4S owners
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleAT&TiPhone 4s
Even though the iPhone 4 came to Verizon as an alternative carrier in February, the iPhone 4S was the first phone to launch without exclusivity to AT&T. AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint all carry the iPhone 4S nationwide — well, at least when it’s in stock — and even with all the complaints over the years, customers are still choosing AT&T more than any other carrier. Based on statistics from Localytics, more than half of all iPhone 4S units activated are on AT&T.
AT&T’s iPhone 4S has claimed 56 percent of market share, making it the leading carrier for Apple’s latest smartphone. Coming in far behind is Verizon with 32 percent and last but not least, Sprint with just 12 percent. The latter is fairl...

Apple settles MagSafe 'strain relief' lawsuit; get cash if you replaced a frayed AC adapter
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
Apple has been replacing faulty MagSafe adapters for three years now, but if you paid real dollars to get yours fixed, you may be owed all or part of your money back. The Cupertino computer company recently settled with the plaintiffs in a class-action lawsuit which alleged that the old T adapters were dangerously defective — they'd separate near the connector, like the picture above — and under the settlement terms, anyone who purchased a replacement adapter is owed up to $79. Just how much depends on when the replacement was purchased, relative to when the MacBook was bought, and of course you'll need to file some paperwork. Hope you kept your receipts! Find all the terms, conditions and c...

iOS 5.0.1 released early to select users in the AppleSeed program
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleiOS 5
As you probably are already aware, Apple has previously admitted that there are bugs affecting battery life in iOS 5 devices and is working on a fix for the next software release. Shortly after that confirmation, Apple began seeding a beta version of 5.0.1 to developers. The update reportedly contained a number of bug fixes, including ones that addressed the battery life issues.
A few end-users who complained about battery life and are a part of Apple’s AppleSeed program, which allows Apple to invite select customers to test pre-release software, have begun receiving the update as well. Participants in the program are being warned prior to updating their device that they will be unable to do...

We’ve previously seen Apple’s much raved about Siri intelligent assistant feature hacked to work on an iPhone 4, but now developers have managed to hack the feature to work on an old iPhone 3GS. The hack comes from developers Grant Paul and Steve Troughton-Smith, while a video demoing the hack was posted by Ryan Petrich.
Petrich is well-known in the jailbreak community for his Activator extension that brings customized gestures for specific apps. The short clip shows him successfully using Siri on the iPhone 3GS to query contact information. He also revealed via Twitter that he is working on integrating Activator with Siri.

HTC talks patent deals to fight Apple, Android 4.0 updates
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleHTCGoogleAndroid 4.0
HTC outlined some of its Android plans on Monday that included both the courtroom and its products. In a far-ranging briefing, the company's CEO Peter Chou told Reuters his company was "open-minded" to the prospect of buying patents to escalate its fight with Apple. There weren't any specific plans, he said.
The company has so far had a tough time in legal battles with Apple, being found in violation in one complaint and having other attempts shot down. It has only made small gestures towards improving its ability to contest Apple's claims, buying S3 after a patent win and borrowing from Google and Motorola for countersuits.
In extra comments, Chou added that the company would push more into...

Charlie Miller's latest iOS hack gets into the App Store, gets him tossed out
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleiOS 5
This isn't the first brush Apple's iOS platform has had with apps that exploit security holes to run unsigned code, but according to the developer of InstaStock, this may be the first to get a security researcher booted from its developer program. Charlie Miller shared his discovery with Forbes earlier today, showing off an app which successfully made it through Apple's approval process despite packing the ability to download and run unsigned code. That could allow a malicious app to access user data or activate hardware features remotely. Apple pulled the app after the findings were published, and according to Miller, revoked his developer access shortly afterward for what seems to be a cle...

Hong Kong iPhone 4S pre-orders sell out in 10 minutes, analyst says
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 4s
Apple iPhone 4S pre-orders in Hong Kong sold out within just 10 minutes, analyst Brian White with Ticonderoga Securities said Monday in a note to investors. Pre-orders began last Friday and the phone will officially land in stores this Friday. White estimates that the Chinese market will be key to Apple’s continued growth. The analyst believes Apple’s revenue from “Greater China” — mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan — topped $4.5 billion last quarter, a 270% increase from the same quarter in 2010. That figure was 16% of Apple’s total sales, up from the 2% of sales that Greater China represented in 2009. Apple currently owns and operates six official Apple Stores in China. White reiterated ...

If you downloaded yesterdays iOS 5 beta you might want to check that iPhone / iPad / iPod touch for an OTA update. No word on what's new in 9A404 -- a mere two builds from yesterdays 9A402 -- but the updated build should still bring solace to those suffering from battery-drain issues. We're getting errors trying to download the developer notes, but we'll update if we find anything new or noteworthy.

Siri is back in business, but reasons for the outage remain unclear
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
After a massive outage affecting iPhone 4S owners throughout the country, Siri, the intelligent, voice-controlled personal assistant, is back in businesses, as users are now reporting. As we previously mentioned, the feature stopped working properly yesterday quoting that network connection problems were to blame.
Why would a network connection failure be causing troubles? Well, even though Siri is integrated in iOS 5, it still relies on Apple's servers, to which it sends your input for processing. By doing so, the assistant is able to accurately interpret your commands and to respond to them accordingly.
Although Apple has yet to comment on the outage, a server overload sounds like a plausi...

Motorola wins injunction against Apple in Germany? [updated]
Like UnlikeFiled in: AppleMotorola
FOSS Patents is reporting that Motorola has won an injunction related to a patent infringement lawsuit in Germany, Europe’s largest market. According to the ruling by a Mannheim Regional Court, Apple is barred from selling any mobile device that infringe on two Motorola Mobility patents filed in April of 2003. Motorola is also reportedly owed for past damages. One of the patents in question relates to GSM, UMTS and 3G, and it is unclear what the second patent covers. If Motorola Mobility actually has won an injunction against all of Apple’s mobile devices in Germany, it would be a huge win for the company and Google’s Android platform as well. We’ll keep you updated.

UniBeast helps install Lion on your Hackintosh
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleMac OS X 10.7
The process of installing Mac OS X Lion on custom Hackintosh PCs has become much easier, thanks to a new utility called UniBeast that creates an all-in-one bootable USB drive, allowing users to install the OS from scratch instead of having to install Snow Leopard first and then upgrade.
To use the tool, you'll need a 8GB or larger flash drive, which UniBeast uses to create the bootable drive from your copy of Lion, whether it's from the App Store or on a thumb drive. After that, installation of Mac OS Lion should be a simple process, but you'll still need use another handy utility called MultiBeast to install drivers and get your Hackintosh up and running.
