Lenovo's ThinkPad Tablet visits the FCC, meeting described as business-like

Lenovo's ThinkPad Tablet visits the FCC, meeting described as business-like

Posted on Aug 09, 2011 by MG1

This isn't a case where an FCC appearance offers our first hint of an imminent release, but those holding out for Lenovo's ThinkPad Tablet instead of the company's more consumer-minded IdeaPad K1 can at least rest assured that things are apparently still on track. The tablet's now officially passed through the FCC, which should be the device's last major stop before its August 23rd release date. Not much else in the way of surprises, as you might expect, but ThinkPad fans do now have some handsome line art to enjoy while they wait for the real thing. Hit the source link below for a bigger version, along with the few other parts of the filing that remain non-confidential.

$700 HP TouchPad 4G now available for pre-order from Amazon

$700 HP TouchPad 4G now available for pre-order from Amazon

Posted on Aug 09, 2011 by MG1

The HP TouchPad 4G with HSPA+ support is now available for pre-order from Amazon. The online retailer doesn’t give a specific launch date and instead says “this item has not yet been released,” and that customers “may pre-order it now and [Amazon] will deliver it to you when it arrives.” The TouchPad made its debut on July 1st as a Wi-Fi only device with a 1.2GHz processor. In our review we said the device was “just good” and that its software needed a “shot of adrenaline.” However, AT&T’s upcoming version will sport a faster 1.5GHz processor, the aforementioned HSPA+ support and HP’s latest webOS 3.0.2 software. Amazon is currently listing the TouchPad 4G for $699.99, which means you’ll be ...

Apple iPad expected to hold 60 percent of tablet market through 2020

Apple iPad expected to hold 60 percent of tablet market through 2020

Posted on Aug 09, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: TabletsApple

You might be able to chalk this up to another bold prediction from an analyst, but according to Charlie Wolf, analyst at Needham, Apple's ubiquitous iPad tablet will still be dominating the market 9 years from now. Wolf makes these claims based on the analysis that other tablets have yet to capture the public's attention the way the iPad has.
Wolf predicts that the iPad will end this year with 85 percent of the market, and will still hold on to 72.5 percent of the market in 2015 with shipments of 101 million units. By 2020, Apple will ship 140 million iPads and will still have 60 percent of the tablet market.
Wolf explains his reasoning: "Future tablets are more likely to steal share from on...

Non-Apple tablet shipments to rocket 134% in 2012

Posted on Aug 09, 2011 by MG1

Non-Apple tablet shipments are expected to grow as much as 134% year-on-year in 2012, DigiTimes reported on Monday. That’s larger than the 55% shipment boost Apple’s iPad is expected to see next year. Android will be the catalyst for the growth; analysts predict that 19-20 million Android tablets will ship this year and that a far greater 44-45 million will ship during 2012 thanks to the introduction of Ice Cream Sandwich. The tablets will likely be powered by new chips from NVIDIA, Qualcomm, and Texas Instruments. Apple is expected to ship 35-36 million iPad tablets this year and analysts project that it will move as many as 54-55 million next year. Those figures sound about right to us. In...

We haven’t heard much recently about the rumored Amazon tablets codenamed Hollywood and Coyote, but that’s because it’s the calm before the storm. The tablets are indeed brewing and new supplier information suggests that Amazon expects to ship as much as 3 million units this fall.
According to Taiwan Economic News, Amazon has already placed orders with contract manufacturer Quanta Computer, which was responsible for RIM’s PlayBook tablet that recently received FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standard) certification. This honor will mean increased business from government procurement. Quanta will also be manufacturing Sony’s S1 and S2 tablets.

HP TouchPad now $299.99 in Staples promo

HP TouchPad now $299.99 in Staples promo

Posted on Aug 08, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: TabletsHPTouchPad

Tempted by that Woot $380 HP TouchPad deal we mentioned earlier today? There could be a way to get an even cheaper TouchPad, if you’re near a Staples this weekend. The retailer has already dropped the TouchPad by $100 from August 5 to 7, but webOSroundup spotted a Fatwallet coupon that promises another $100 off again. That could bring the 16GB TouchPad down to just $299.99.
Using the same coupon, you could potentially get the 32GB TouchPad for $399.99 too. The deal works because the initial $100 is an instant rebate and the second $100 is a coupon, so you’re not stacking coupons (which usually falls foul of the T&Cs).

It seems that now is the best time to buy the HP TouchPad – HP has rolled out the much anticipated big update fixing most of the issues with the tablet and it's dropping the price on the 9.7-incher. Now, web discounter Woot.com has joined in and slashed the price of the 16GB TouchPad even further to $379.99. The website puts out a single product on sale for one day, so you'd better hurry. The tablet isn't even refurbished – it's brand new, so there's no catch if you don't count the additional $5 for shipping.
The HP TouchPad will ship with 1 year warranty from the manufacturer and all the standard contents in the package – a wall charger, a microUSB cable and a cleaning cloth. Woot's offer b...

Additional details about Sony's two tablets S1 and S2 revealed

Additional details about Sony's two tablets S1 and S2 revealed

Posted on Aug 08, 2011 by MG1

Sony never really went into details when it announced its two Honeycomb tablets – S1 and S2. Now we have few additional tidbits of information to share, though we still don’t have the complete picture.
First of all, we know that the S1 — which is the one with a single 9.4-inch IPS LCD display with the TruBlack and BRAVIA technologies — will be available in 4 versions. Users will get to choose between 16 and 32 GB of built-in storage and whether they want the 3G+Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi only version. Moreover, we’ve heard the S1′s battery life will be comparable to that of Apple’s iPad 2, which is about 10 hours.
As for the S2, at least initially it will only be available with both 3G and Wi-Fi connect...

Screenshots of the HTC Puccini are leaked

With a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and a 10 inch display with 1280 x 800 resolution, the HTC Puccini was made to compete with the other 10 inch Android tablets like the Motorola XOOM and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. The Taiwan based firm did take the Scribe Technology from its 7 inch HTC Flyer and has made the stylus a dedicated part of the larger tablet. The camera on the back will be 8MP and yes, there will also be a front-facing lens. The Android Honeycomb OS will be running the show.
HTC has certainly customized this tablet as you can tell from the screenshot of the QWERTY which shows that a numeric pad will be used for quick entry of numbers. Besides the bloatware that AT&T so generously...

HP TouchPad will get $100 discount this weekend

HP TouchPad will get $100 discount this weekend

Posted on Aug 05, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: TabletsHPTouchPad

If our review scared you off of the HP TouchPad with webOS you may want to give the tablet a second chance, as buying the device from HP directly this weekend will net you a $100 discount.
The deal, first reported by PreCentral, says buying the 16 GB TouchPad directly from HP.com from Aug. 5-7 will get you the $100 instant rebate but it looks like the 32 GB model will still have the full cost. The retail store Staples will be doling out a $100 coupon for either version of the webOS tablet but that will also only last through the weekend.
Of course, one has to wonder why the sudden discount. The HP TouchPad was killed in reviews because the software just wasn’t ready and the hardware seemed j...

Amazon UK has the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 on pre-order; shipping next week

Posted on Aug 05, 2011 by MG1

At long last, the European market is finally seeing the long awaited Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, but not to ruin the monumental arriving, it seems that we might soon see its slightly smaller sibling arriving in the very near future.
Always a consideration for those who don’t want to be trotting around with a large gadget, Amazon UK currently has the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 up for pre-order on their site. Interestingly, its in-stock date is set for next week on August 12th, which means that it’s coming much sooner than what most people think.
However, it’s surely sporting one serious price tag out of the gate and seems intent on catching the gaze of only diehard early adopters. Priced at...

Remember Nvidia's quad-core Kal-El chip, also known as the Tegra 3? The one expected to roll out in August, you might wonder. That exact one is now pushed to make its official debut in October, while on smartphones it will arrive only in early-2012, just after the Holiday shopping season and around CES time in early January.
“Project Kal-El-powered tablets are coming this Fall, and phones around the CES 2012 timeframe,” NVIDIA confirmed for Androidandme.
NVIDIA's Kal-El has been delayed
That's a two-month delay for the chip on tablets, but if you're wondering whether there won't be yet another delay in October, you may be calmed down by the fact that the release date for the upcoming quad-c...

Pandigital unveils Nova, Planet and Star Android tablets, 'flagship' device coming next month

Posted on Aug 04, 2011 by MG1

It's shaping up to be a busy month for Pandigital. Two days after we spotted the Nova at Best Buy, the astronomically-inclined company has decided to officially unveil the Android tablet alongside the Planet and Star, with a fourth "flagship" device slated for release in September. Each of the three slates is powered by an A9 Cortex processor, and boasts a seven-inch touchscreen display (800x600 resolution on the Planet and Nova and 800x480 on the Star, pictured above). As far as storage goes, both the Planet and the Star offer 2GB of onboard memory, with the Nova packing 4GB, and all three offer WiFi and HDMI connectivity. Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 shows up for pre-order at Amazon.co.uk, ships August 11th

Posted on Aug 04, 2011 by MG1

Back when we got word of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 making its British debut on August 4th, Samsung told us that our UK brethren could expect its elusive younger sibling, the 8.9, "later in the year." Well, if its recently minted Amazon page is correct, the Galaxy Tab 8.9 will land across the pond just one week after its big brother, on August 11th. The 3G-sporting Android tablet carries a £605 price tag. Considering its stop off at the FCC in June, and the recent appearance of the Retail Mode app, we hope to see the 8.9 stateside sometime soon. Otherwise, it'll be off to the UK for you die-hard Galaxy fans.
