Samsung plans tweaked Galaxy Tab 7.0N to skirt Apple patent complaints

Samsung plans tweaked Galaxy Tab 7.0N to skirt Apple patent complaints

Posted on Jan 14, 2012 by MG1

Samsung is reportedly planning to launch a tweaked version of its Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus tablet in Germany. The Galaxy Tab 7.0N will likely offer many of the same features of the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus but with design changes that could help it avoid litigation from Apple. Apple and Samsung have been butting heads in courtrooms around the globe and Apple last year successfully banned Samsung’s local subsidiaries from selling the Galaxy Tab 10.1. As a result, Samsung launched the Galaxy Tab 10.1N, which has also been the subject of ongoing patent litigation. The Galaxy Tab 7.0N is expected to cost about $770 without carrier subsidies.

Unknown Samsung device gets Wi-Fi certification, could be Galaxy Note successor

Unknown Samsung device gets Wi-Fi certification, could be Galaxy Note successor

Posted on Jan 12, 2012 by MG15

A couple of mysterious Samsung devices were just spotted in the Wi-Fi Alliance's database after receiving Wi-Fi certification – the Samsung GT-N8000 and GT-N8013. What we are dealing with here is not quite clear, but let us put on our deerstalker, take out our magnifying glass, and make a prediction backed up by some old-fashioned logic. So, the device with a model number closest to the ones listed is the Samsung Galaxy Note, also known as the GT-N7000. That said, it could be that the two new devices have quite a lot to do with it. On one hand, these two new model numbers may belong to a Galaxy Note successor. But on the other hand, a Galaxy Note successor might carry a GT-N7100 model name, ...

Apple iPad 3 on track for March shipments, thanks to the early Chinese New Year

The Japanese source for all things Apple Macotakara reports that thanks to the Chinese New Year coming earlier in 2012, Foxconn and Pegatron's iPad 3 production schedule has been sped up. The two Chinese manufacturers are rumored to split production 85% to 15%, respectively, just as they do with the iPhone 4S, but we've heard rumors that Apple is aiming to switch more of the iPad line production to Pegatron, leaving Foxconn focused on handsets, where most of its fat profit margins come from. The first iPad 3 batch would be ready in early March, and it will be the one with Sharp's panels, so the first buyers will get to taste what is shaping to be a long lasting relationship between Apple and...

Verizon says (almost) 'all' future phones and tablets will be LTE

Verizon says (almost) 'all' future phones and tablets will be LTE

Posted on Jan 12, 2012 by MG15

In case you hadn't noticed, Verizon is going all in on LTE. And that doesn't just mean investing heavily in its network and snatching up spectrum left and right -- it also means making the 4G tech a "hard requirement" for all future devices. Outside of a few exceptions, primarily limited to its push-to-talk offerings, all upcoming phones, tablets and mobile hotspots will boast an LTE radio. Verizon's associate director of device marketing, Keith Lampron, assured CNET that the company isn't going to turn into an iPhone and Android only outlet -- Windows Phone and BlackBerry offerings are welcome to join Big Red, so long as they hop on the 700MHz train.

Huawei MediaPad to ship with Ice Cream Sandwich, older models will be updated

Posted on Jan 12, 2012 by MG15

Existing models of the MediaPad will receive an Android 4.0 update by the end of the first quarter, and new MediaPads will come pre-loaded with the software beginning some time the first quarter. Additionally, the tablet will be offered in the current color scheme, and will add shadow black, classic brown, and passion pink to the mix. Orange UK launches Tahiti, a self-branded Android tablet

Orange UK launches Tahiti, a self-branded Android tablet

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG15

After debuting its first self-branded tablet in Europe last year, Orange has now announced the Tahiti, a budget tablet launched today in the UK. Although the 7-inch tablet is Orange-branded, it's made by Huawei, with a 1.2Ghz dual-core processor, 5-megapixel camera, and Android 3.2. The major draw, however, will probably be its price point — it's £69.99 (about $108) with a two-year contract. Unfortunately, the contract itself is a bit pricey, at £25 for 2GB of data, 1GB of which can only be used on off-peak hours. It also comes bundled free with the two-year data plan when buying the San Francisco II smartphone, allowing 2GB of data to be shared between phone and tablet for £41 a month.

The USB Implementers Forum has announced that the high-speed USB 3.0 protocol will find its way to smartphones and tablets by the end of 2012. Already available for desktop and laptop computers, USB 3.0 will allow mobile devices to transfer data to and from a host computer at rates of up to 100MB per second. This is nearly fifteen times faster than what the current USB 2.0 technology offers. The new USB 3.0 ports will be backwards compatible with USB 2.0 computers and accessories. No manufacturers have committed to using USB 3.0 in mobile devices just yet, but the consortium says that it should be commercially available before the year is out.

Android 4.0 update hits Asus Transformer Prime

Android 4.0 update hits Asus Transformer Prime

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG15

Asus has let the Android 4.0 update for the Asus Transformer Prime loose a couple of days early. The Ice Cream Sandwich software wasn't meant to hit the slate until 12 January, but Asus decided to bring it forward, announcing the new availability at its CES 2012 press conference. Asus was pretty keen to ram home the fact that this makes the Asus Transformer Prime the World's first Ice Cream Sandwich tablet, so we wouldn't be surprised if it transpired that a competitor has the software ready to go too.

MasterImage glasses-free 3D tablet and smartphone displays

MasterImage glasses-free 3D tablet and smartphone displays

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG2

Filed in: Tablets

MasterImage 3D recently announced that it would be demonstrating two new glasses-free 3D displays at CES, and we just had our first look. The company is working on two displays — a 720p 4.3-inch display, and a 10.1-inch tablet display with a 1920 x 1200 resolution — and it says its new cell-matrix parallax barrier technology provides brighter images, better image quality, and wider viewing angles. Based on our first look, the technology is certainly promising: the 3D image is brighter, clearer, and much easier to look at than other glasses-free displays (we were fortunate enough to have an Evo 3D in hand to compare). Still, you're going to have to pretty much look directly at the screen, sin...

ViewSonic shows off 7

ViewSonic shows off 7" ViewPad E70

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG15

Just in case you haven't had enough news recently about Android tablets, we've got another one for you. This time it's from ViewSonic and it's part of the budget category of devices. The ViewSonic ViewPad E70 is a 7" tablet running Ice Cream Sandwich, and due out in late Q1 of this year for just $180. Unfortunately, that's where the good news ends. Sure, the tab is under $200, but for that you're getting an Ice Cream Sandwich tablet which still has capacitive buttons for some strange reason, and the innards are just as strange. The E70 has a 1 GHz CPU (no word on cores, but we're assuming single), and just 4 GB of storage. It will be capable of 1080p out through an HDMI port. Overall, if you...

ViewSonic unleashes ViewPad 10pi, 10e and ViewPhone 3 at CES

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG15

It wasn't enough for ViewSonic to bring just one tablet to CES 2012, the company had two ten-inchers in tow as well, though, neither the 10pi or 10e sport the lust-worthy Ice Cream Sandwich. The 10pi is a dual-booting machine with an Oak Trail z670 pushing your choice of Gingerbread or Windows 7 to a 1280 x 800 IPS panel. The 10e is a 9.1mm-thin Android 2.3 device running on a 1GHz Cortex A8. Both the 10pi and 10e will be available later this month for $849 and $299, respectively. The company also announced that the ViewPhone 3 would be coming to Latin America, as expected, later this quarter for $279.

Samsung to concentrate on profit rather than handset volume

Samsung to concentrate on profit rather than handset volume

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG15

At the CES in Las Vegas, Samsung CEO Choi Gee-sung told Reuters that increasing profitability is the Korean manufacturer's new number one target. Just the day before, the executive said that Samsung plans on becoming the world's number one handset maker this year to break Nokia's 14 year reign on top. Gee-sung said that Samsung has topped Nokia in terms of revenue, will probably top the Finnish based firm in terms of volume shipped this year, but trails other companies when it comes to profits. "Our target should move on to this," Choi said. In the third quarter of last year, Samsung became the top smartphone manufacturer and is building on the success of its well-received Samsung Galaxy S I...

Last week before the doors of CES were officially cracked open, Razer teased their Project Fiona news in order to get some hype for whatever in the world it was going to end up being. As we predicted, Project Fiona is the company’s first foray into the tablet market, and boy, is it a doozey. Unlike the current flock of tablets on the market, Project Fiona has been specifically designed to play the most popular PC games as it’ll be powered by the Intel Core i7 processor. As you can see from the concept images released today, Project Fiona will sport a 10.1″ 1200×800 display with a full-screen user interface that will support multitouch, force feedback, Dolby 7.1 surround sound, Wi-Fi, Bluetoo...

Sony displays VAIO tablet prototypes; future Windows 8 hardware?

Sony displays VAIO tablet prototypes; future Windows 8 hardware?

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG2

If you blinked while watching our Sony live blog, you likely missed Kazuo Hirai teasing of a few prototype VAIO laptop and tablets. Well, luckily, Sony's displaying them behind glass at its booth. To me, the most interesting of the two is the tablet that slides over a detachable keyboard. It's a lot like the Series 7 Slider Samsung showed last year (it never came to market), but the tablet separates from the base and also has a stylus. There's a short video of it behind glass below, but if I had to guess this really seems like a perfect fit for Windows 8. (VAIO is Sony's Windows-only brand, its tablet is part of its mobile group.) That said, I ran into a Sony executive at the booth, who said...
