We’ve been consistently impressed with Samsung’s high-end TVs. This year’s 8000 models are especially slick, with crazy thin bezels and outstanding pictures. That’s nice and all, but it doesn’t matter unless all of that turns into sales. Samsung has been losing sales over the last year or so, resulting in an atrocious second quarter. The whole flat-panel market is a bit rough right now and Samsung has announced cuts in TV production, just like LG before them.

LG, Sharp and Philips to build developer's kit, create Smart TV app standard

LG, Sharp and Philips to build developer's kit, create Smart TV app standard

Posted on Sep 09, 2011 by MG3

Filed in: TVsLGPhilipsSHARP

A triumvirate of television titans -- LG, Sharp and Philips -- are joining forces to create a development kit, defining a common standard for their Smart TV apps. The power play addresses the problem of fragmentation, since developers will only need to make one version of an app for it to work across all three of the 'tubes operating systems. Based on open standards like HTML5, CE-HTML and HbbTV, developers should get their hands on a beta version by early October, with the finalized version due by the end of the year. The better question now is whether the Romanesque trio can drum up enough developer support to beat out competitors in an app-tastic coup d'etat, or if the likes of Vizio, Son...

Vestel shows off a prototype BitTorrent Certified TV at IFA

Posted on Sep 08, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: TVs

Far from sneaking in to the living room, Vestel had a BitTorrent Certified television on display at IFA 2011 this past week. That official stamp means it packs the usual suite of connected TV features including playing local media across the network, and it's guaranteed to work with BitTorrent approved files from the internet. There's no word on any official release for this prototype -- and we haven't been able to locate anyone who got a hands-on demo, let us know if you saw it -- but it definitely shows how BitTorrent is trying to expand its platform in a manner similar to DivX and XBMC / Boxee. Check out the press release after the break, we'll be sitting back and watching some totally le...

Toshiba's new Regza WL800A HDTV hooks up with your smartphone via MHL

Posted on Sep 02, 2011 by MG3

The MHL Consortium wants to banish HDMI ports from our phones in favor of its Mobile High-Definition Link connection, and the tech has found its way into handsets like the GSII and the EVO 3D. But until now, there were no TVs to connect to. Toshiba's latest in the Regza line, the WL800A, is the lone set in its 2011 lineup to pack the 5-pin port that pulls 1080p from your mobile device and puts it up on a 46-inch or 55-inch edge-lit LED panel. Best part is, the MHL connection pushes power back into your phone at the same time video is streaming -- so you don't have to worry about your phone dying on you in the middle of your mobile movie marathon. Currently for sale in the land of Oz for $2,3...
