Sony UK is offering an online tool that helps perspective TV buyers visualize how a screen would look in their own house. The TV Size Guide is a web-based app that will create images of different size TVs superimposed over a rendering of a wall of their apartment or house. The would-be buyer can then compare different sizes and then get detailed information on the best fit.

Using the tool is straightforward. The user first downloads and prints out a "marker". The marker is then placed either on a wall or on top of a piece of furniture where the TV will go. The user then snaps a picture of the marker in position and uploads it to Sony's special site. The app then creates an image of a TV in ...

Hitachi To Stop TV Production By Year-End

Posted on Aug 04, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: TVsHitachi

It’s been a tough year for TV manufacturers, with the sector reporting major losses across the board, especially among the Japanese TV manufacturers. Sony recently announced restructuring its money-losing TV business, and now just a day after, Hitachi has announced that it, too, will be making some changes, which include shutting down its TV production operations in Japan before the end of the year.
Margins have dropped tremendously for Japanese TV manufacturers who not only experienced hurdles during the earthquake and tsunami disaster earlier this year, but also face a now ever strengthening Japanese Yen that eats away at export profits. Its currency strength has been a result of investor ...

LG to bring 55-inch OLED TV to market in 2012

LG to bring 55-inch OLED TV to market in 2012

Posted on Jul 25, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: TVsLG

There have been a few OLED TVs on the market so far. Sony had its OLED a few years back, but the set was so expensive that it never took off thanks to that price. Eventually the cost of the OLED panels will come down and we will see the TVs on the market at prices consumers might be willing to pay. The sets promise better image quality, thinner profiles, and less power consumption.
LG has announced that it will be tossing a 55-inch OLED TV onto the market in mid-2012. LG’s CEO noted that the company would not focus on small and medium size OLED screens for the tablet and smartphone. CEO Kwon Young-Soo thinks that the AH-IPS panels currently in use are best suited to those smaller screens. Th...

According to a report released by HIS iSuppli, the price of HDTVs have risen for the third straight month. Part of this price hike is due to the more companies releasing 3DTVs, which are typically more expensive. The report states that the average price of flat panel TVs have risen as high as $10 a month for the past three months. “The biggest pricing increases for flat-panel televisions last month were among the new 3D models employing active shutter glasses, the most popular type of three-dimensional set on the market today,” said Riddhi Patel, director for television systems and retail services at IHS.

Samsung gobbles 61% of 3D TV market

Samsung gobbles 61% of 3D TV market

Posted on Jul 05, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: TVsSamsung

The 3D TV market is hardly booming today with the sets not selling as well as TV makers had expected. This is due to a number of reasons including the lack of 3D content and the fact that the tech is more expensive than most consumers are willing to pay today. That will change and 3D TV will become more and more common as the tech matures and gets cheaper and better.
The market may not be as strong as TV makers had hoped, but Samsung has over 60% of what market for the sets there is. Samsung claims that its unit and dollar share for the 3D TV market in the May 22 to June 18 period was 61%. That percentage includes both LED and Plasma 3D TVs. NPD has Samsung at 50% of the unit and dollar mark...

Mitsubishi's new all-in-one set crams 500GB HDD and Blu-ray recorder into tiny package

Mitsubishi's new all-in-one set crams 500GB HDD and Blu-ray recorder into tiny package

Posted on Jun 28, 2011 by MG1

Mitsubishi's new Real LCD-22BLR500 TV is hardly the first set packed with a built-in Blu-ray recorder and hard drive, but it's certainly one of the smaller ones we've seen. The 22-inch 1,366 x 768 LED-backlit display is probably too tiny for your average living room, but cramming the 500GB HDD and optical dive in the base helps it keep a thin profile and a stable footprint that could fit perfectly in a small bedroom or dorm. Around back are a bevy of inputs, including a USB jack, a pair of HDMI ports, an SD slot, Ethernet, and i.Link. Sadly, this compact all-in-one TV will be a Japan-only affair when it hits shelves on July 21st for around ¥110,00 (about $1,360).

Samsung Smart TV platform installed base passes two million, adds BBC News app

While finding out precisely how many people are actually using its apps (over 100 million downloaded) is still tricky, Samsung has proudly announced there are over two million units out there packing its Smart TV platform. That count includes over 730,000 units in North America alone, and according to the company, outpaces the initial uptake of LED lit TVs. Of course, having a Samsung Apps store is nothing without apps to put in it, and over the UK there's a new BBC News app that is currently available exclusively on the Samsung platform.
