HTC talks patent deals to fight Apple, Android 4.0 updates

Posted on Nov 08, 2011 by MG1

HTC outlined some of its Android plans on Monday that included both the courtroom and its products. In a far-ranging briefing, the company's CEO Peter Chou told Reuters his company was "open-minded" to the prospect of buying patents to escalate its fight with Apple. There weren't any specific plans, he said.
The company has so far had a tough time in legal battles with Apple, being found in violation in one complaint and having other attempts shot down. It has only made small gestures towards improving its ability to contest Apple's claims, buying S3 after a patent win and borrowing from Google and Motorola for countersuits.
In extra comments, Chou added that the company would push more into...

Reuters: HP considering letting go of webOS for a few hundred million

Posted on Nov 08, 2011 by MG1

Palm, a brand that was once loved by many who made the company’s delightfully simple and easy to use personal digital assistants an essential part of their lives, has been repeatedly kicked in the face over the past few years. On the brink of death, they got some money from a big mouth long haired venture capitalist named Roger McNamee, who then cashed in his chips shortly thereafter by selling the underdog smartphone vendor to one of America’s biggest corporations: HP. Sadly, Palm didn’t get any love and attention while in the belly of the beast, and the decision was made to stop producing hardware running their incredibly innovative webOS platform. Over 500 employees were fired, and the on...

Charlie Miller's latest iOS hack gets into the App Store, gets him tossed out

Posted on Nov 08, 2011 by MG1

This isn't the first brush Apple's iOS platform has had with apps that exploit security holes to run unsigned code, but according to the developer of InstaStock, this may be the first to get a security researcher booted from its developer program. Charlie Miller shared his discovery with Forbes earlier today, showing off an app which successfully made it through Apple's approval process despite packing the ability to download and run unsigned code. That could allow a malicious app to access user data or activate hardware features remotely. Apple pulled the app after the findings were published, and according to Miller, revoked his developer access shortly afterward for what seems to be a cle...

Posted on Nov 08, 2011 by MG1

Many have wondered what HTC's plans are when it comes to upgrading its existing Android smartphones to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, as the manufacturer has said that it was still evaluating the new operating system and how it fits with HTC's custom Sense interface that it likes to use. Now, those questions have found answers, as HTC has announced a list of eight smartphones that will get Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades in 2012.
The company says that in addition to the just-released HTC Vivid, which is apparently ready for Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box, the HTC Sensation, HTC Sensation XL, HTC Sensation XE, HTC Rezound, HTC EVO 3D, HTC EVO Design 4G, and HTC Amaze 4G are all planned to get...

If you downloaded yesterdays iOS 5 beta you might want to check that iPhone / iPad / iPod touch for an OTA update. No word on what's new in 9A404 -- a mere two builds from yesterdays 9A402 -- but the updated build should still bring solace to those suffering from battery-drain issues. We're getting errors trying to download the developer notes, but we'll update if we find anything new or noteworthy.

With Gingerbread and Froyo being the most popular versions, it should be noted that there's still a 10.7% share of Androids running Eclair.
Older versions have largely been phased out and Honeycomb remains pretty unpopular with a total share of just 1.9%.
What everyone is looking forward to, though, is a clear statement from manufacturers regarding an u...

HTC announces specifics on Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades, includes Rezound

Posted on Nov 07, 2011 by MG1

It's been a little over two weeks since Google unveiled Ice Cream Sandwich along with its first ambassador, the Galaxy Nexus. Since then, a few manufacturers have shared their intent to bring Android 4.0 to specific devices. HTC was initially rather vague about its upgrade plans -- no doubt faced with the daunting task of keeping Sense relevant in light of ICS' vast design improvements -- but tonight the Taiwanese giant issued an official statement on Facebook outlining specifics on its Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades. Basically, it looks like most (if not all) of HTC's high-end phones since the introduction of the Sensation will be getting a taste of Google's latest tasty treat early next year,...

The process of installing Mac OS X Lion on custom Hackintosh PCs has become much easier, thanks to a new utility called UniBeast that creates an all-in-one bootable USB drive, allowing users to install the OS from scratch instead of having to install Snow Leopard first and then upgrade.
To use the tool, you'll need a 8GB or larger flash drive, which UniBeast uses to create the bootable drive from your copy of Lion, whether it's from the App Store or on a thumb drive. While discussing his intentions to expand Nokia’s presence in the United States, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop recently made comments that suggest his company could have a Windows 8 tablet in the pipeline. “There’s a new tablet opportunity coming,” Elop told Bloomberg in a recent interview. “We see the opportunity. Unquestionably, that will change the dynamics [of the market].” Elop described Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system as a “supercharged” version of its Windows Phone operating system, implying a hint of interest in using the OS on a tablet. The two operating systems share a user interface called “Metro UI.” Nokia recently announced its first two Windows Phone devices, the Lumia 710 and ...

Repairing those low-end Androids may cost carriers up to $2 billion

Posted on Nov 04, 2011 by MG1

WDS, a company which provides device management and call center services to carriers, has done a study of 600 000 tech support calls from its centers in Europe, North America, Africa and Australia, and found out that those cheap Android phones don't come as cheap in the end.
Android has been taking over the smartphone world for a while now, and a lot of its current 57% market share success is due to affordable handsets that cost as little as $100 or less to produce, and which many carriers are offering at the low-end of their smartphone portfolios.
These comprise both of handsets that aren't from a well-established brand, as well as phones from Samsung, LG or other household names. Tim Deluc...
