Motorola exec's comments on Android updates don't jibe with reality

This seems like a strange claim, and we're not even sure that we believe what Motorola is saying, but it seems that Motorola executive Christy Wyatt believes that the Nexus hardware which is to blame for the slow updates from manufacturers.
Wyatt is the senior VP and general manager of Motorola's Business Enterprise Unit. According to Wyatt, "When Google does a release of the software ... they do a version of the software for whatever phone they just shipped. The rest of the ecosystem doesn't see it until you see it. Hardware is by far the long pole in the tent, with multiple chipsets and multiple radio bands for multiple countries. It's a big machine to churn." Wyatt says that once manufac...

Considering that the white HTC Sensation is shipping in Europe starting March 1st with Android 4.0, it might be no surprise that the Sensation series will be the first HTC phones to be updated to the latest Android version. Starting at the end of next month, the HTC Sensation, HTC Sensation 4G and HTC Sensation XE will be receiving Ice Cream Sandwich with the HTC Sensation XL receiving it shortly afterward.
Other HTC devices getting Android 4.0 sometime later this year include the HTC Rezound, HTC Vivid, HTC Amaze 4G, HTC EVO 3D, HTC EVO Design 4G, HTC Incredible S, HTC Desire S and HTC Desire HD. No precise date was given as to when the owners of these devices can expect the latest build of...

Google Wallet PIN cracked on rooted Android devices
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
The security of the PIN that protects Google Wallet transactions has been compromised — though most users won't need to worry about the issue for now, as it only applies to users who have rooted their Android smartphone. The key issue is that the PIN is stored on the device itself instead of in the secure NFC element, although it is in an encrypted format. That means that if your Android smartphone is rooted, if somebody takes your phone, he or she will be able to access the encrypted file that stores your PIN. From there, it's a relatively simple matter of running a program that uses a brute force method to guess your PIN.

There's no 'secret project' to port OS X to ARM, because it already exists
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleMac OS X 10.4
You may have seen some reports doing the rounds today that a "secret project" was initiated at Apple to port the underlying guts of OS X (AKA Darwin) to ARM chips, and that those duties were handled by a then-intern named Tristan Schaap. The story goes that Schaap was part of a team tasked with manufacturing a build of Darwin for the Marvell MV88F6281 processor, and that upon completion of the project, he was hired on by Apple as a CoreOS engineer. While the latter part is accurate — Schaap does appear to be part of that team — the rest of it doesn't make sense on a number of levels, the most notable being that the essence of OS X (certainly much of its codebase) has already been adopted for...

Chrome for Android won’t ever get Flash
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid 4.0
Chrome for Android may have set its sights on being the default browser on your Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone, but you’ll have to make do with no Flash Player support if you give in to the new beta’s allure. Having announced that its Flash Player mobile plans were over back in November, Adobe has confirmed that Chrome for Android does indeed arrive too late for a plugin of its own. That’s despite Android 4.0 already having Flash Player support in the native browser.

First impressions of Chrome Beta for Android - Looks to be worth the wait
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid 4.0
We’ve been tinkering around with the new Chrome Beta for a couple of hours now and we’re definitely impressed to see that Google has provided a slick browser that’s also easy on the eyes. Even in beta form, we can imagine that most people who try Chrome for Android will probably stick with it. We’re glad that Google realized that functionality can look good.
The introduction of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich was the first time we saw Google really hone in on the user experience for its mobile operating system and it’s taken that focus to Chrome. The browser is snappy, simple, and rather beautiful, given that it’s just a portal for viewing web content. If you use Chrome on your desktop, the b...

CyanogenMod team releases another CM9 progress report
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
Long-time users of CyanogenMod are used to seeing a new version released shortly after the code is deposited to AOSP. That usually places CM users on the latest version of Android weeks, if not months, ahead of all non-Nexus Android phones. This time has turned out to be a bit different, and the CM team posted an explanation on their website today.
The biggest factor seems to be the huge jump in the code base between Gingerbread (Android 2.3) and Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0). The CM team indicates that they more or less started from scratch with the ICS build of CyanogenMod (CM9), and have been porting their CM7 customized tools to the ICS code.
While this process takes longer, it’s also...

Android 4.0.4 ROM leaks for Verizon's Galaxy Nexus
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsSamsungVerizon WirelessGoogleGALAXY NexusAndroid 4.0
A little gem known as Android 4.0.4 wriggled its way onto the interweb last week, and while it was geared specifically for Sprint's Nexus S 4G, a similar version has just cropped up for the CDMA / LTE Galaxy Nexus from Verizon. While it's only available for tenacious users who've unlocked their bootloader, it seems that a host of improvements are on deck for the official release. First and foremost, the ROM is said to be noticeably faster, with the speed gains also extending to the web browser and the device's boot time. The release also packs a new radio file that (at least from user impressions) offers more seamless transitions between the CDMA and LTE networks. All in all, the rest of the...

Microsoft kills the Start button in latest Windows 8 build
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 8
Microsoft hasn’t been shy about the radical direction it’s taking with the user interface design on Windows 8, but it looks like their latest change may be a big one. PCBeta reports that the latest build of Microsoft’s next operating system does away with the ubiquitous “Start” button, which has graced Windows for almost twenty years. The functionality of the Start button remains, but as a limited “hotspot” in the lower-left corner by default, not unlike the Aero Peek feature in Windows 7. Even that functionality is only present in the classic or desktop mode, which drops the shiny new Metro tile interface for a more traditional windowed UI.

Microsoft loses key Windows Phone employee to Amazon
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftAmazonWindows Phone 7
The man who was in charge of getting new apps and content on the Windows Phone Marketplace has left Microsoft to pursure a similar occupation at Amazon. Brandon Watson apparently feels that the online bookseller-turned-behemoth has a brighter future. Or they offered him more money. Or both. Either way, it’s definitely a setback for Microsoft.
For most people, landing an executive position at Microsoft would be the pinnacle of their career. Watson’s new position at Amazon is working on Kindle apps, so it is almost exactly the same line of work, though now for what was one of his biggest competitors. It leaves a question mark about Microsoft’s future in the mobile space, though not a black hol...

Windows 8 Kernel for Windows Phone 8 may NOT happen
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 8
After the recent leak by Pocketnow and confirmation by Paul Thurrott, one would have though it was a sure thing that the next version of Windows Phone will run on the NT Windows 8 kernel.
Not so fast says The Register, who claims to have spoken to insiders who are not so sure that this idea will come to fruition.
Quoting sources close to Microsoft , they note the leak is true, but say no decision has been taken to base the mobile platform on the Windows 8 kernel.
They note the information leaked was real, but should be thought of as more of a blueprint, a wish-list, than a concrete roadmap, say sources. In particular, the decision to throw out the 15-year-old Windows CE kernel in favour of ...

WebOS will have 'huge advantages' over iOS and Android
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsHPAppleGoogleAndroidiOS 5webOS 3.0
Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman says the company's soon-to-be open source WebOS software will eventually be better than both the Android and iOS platforms.
HP will launch the first version of the reimagined operating system in September this year after deciding to commit the storied software to the open source community.
Whitman said the result will prove to be superior to the 'closed' Apple iOS ecosystem and the undeniably 'fragmented' Android platform.
She also confirmed that the company will re-enter the tablet market, following the HP TouchPad debacle of 2011.
An open and closed case
In an interview with CRN, she said: "There is a clear vision of what we're trying to accomplish.

US government and military getting Android phones
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
Security is one of the things that Android competitors always want to take a swipe at, but if any organizations takes security seriously it would be the US government and US military, and it looks like both will be getting Android devices pretty soon.
We've already seen the Pentagon approve one single customized Android device for use, and now CNN is reporting that US troops may be getting Android devices as soon as this year. It seems that the government has been testing out smartphones for a while and Android fits the needs best because it can be so easily customized. Apple reportedly wouldn't allow the government access to the iOS source code, so the necessary tweaks and customizations w...
