Asus working on prototype Kinect-equipped Windows 8 laptops?

Posted on Jan 30, 2012 by MG1

We know Microsoft will launch Kinect for Windows hardware next month, but a new report claims that the software giant could be working with Asus to build that support directly into laptops. The Daily says it has "checked out" a pair of official prototype Asus laptops that include a Kinect sensor built-in. The sensor, running on a Windows 8 laptop, reportedly stretches across the top of the screen, and includes a set of LEDs at the bottom of the display.
Asus released its own WAVI Xtion hardware last year, based on the same PrimeSense technology used in Kinect, so it's clear the company has experience with motion-controlled devices. Microsoft has not officially detailed its support for Kinect...

RIM CEO Thorsten Heins has a whole team examining iOS and Android devices

Posted on Jan 30, 2012 by MG1

Those of you who have been following the news closely probably know that Thorsten Heins is now leading the company in distress that RIM currently is. He will be the one responsible for bringing RIM back on its feet after a very disappointing in terms of financials 2011. And to accomplish that feat, the proper execution of the PlayBook 2.0 platform, as well as the timely introduction of BlackBerry 10 smartphones, will be of utmost importance.
Of course, RIM will be facing strong competition along the way, the toughest rivals being iOS and Android. However, the Canadian tech company's newly appointed CEO is more than willing to familiarize himself with the competition's offerings, the main rea...

Apple's mobile web share reportedly slid in Q4 as Android took No.1 spot

Posted on Jan 30, 2012 by MG1

Although Apple outsold all Android vendors in the fourth quarter, the Cupertino-based company’s share of mobile internet usage is reportedly beginning to slide. An analysis of last year’s Internet usage shows that in the United States, the proportion of Android mobile web visitors overtook Apple users by the end of the year, according to 51Degrees.mobi. The share of Apple’s iOS web traffic in December fell to 34.1%, while Android increased to 36.6%. In Europe, Apple remained ahead with 42.6% however, despite an increase in Android traffic that pushed the platform to 25.5% by the end of 2011. RIM’s BlackBerry devices remained stable in both regions with roughly 9% of all mobile web usage. “Th...

Windows Phone only getting IPv6 support with Apollo

Windows Phone only getting IPv6 support with Apollo

Posted on Jan 30, 2012 by MG1

According to a leaked recent Nokia presentation Windows Phone users will have to wait till Apollo before they can connect to IPv6-only networks.
In the middle of last year it had been believed Windows Phone 7 Mango will support IPv6 due some entries on Microsoft’s Mango .net documentation, but in practice on IPv6-only networks Windows Phones are not able to get IP addresses.
As can be seen from the graphic above while IPv6 support is very variable, Windows Phone has the poorest support amongst the major and not so major operating systems.

Windows 8 to step back on customization in Apple-like choice

Windows 8 to step back on customization in Apple-like choice

Posted on Jan 27, 2012 by MG1

A seemingly minor decision for Windows 8 in the post-developer preview versions has shown an about-face by Microsoft in its approach to design. During new demos on Thursday to TechRadar, Windows 8 communications lead Chris Flores explained that users wouldn't be allowed to change the background of the main Metro screen to their own photo. Scaling was an issue, but Microsoft had also decided that the home screen tiles would cover it up too much, defeating the point of a custom image.
In its place, Microsoft is offering a mix of basic styles with color themes, each of which has a coordinating set of hues for the trim. The login screen will still allow a custom photo, much like Windows Phone.

Ubuntu 12.04 to replace traditional menus with new HUD

Ubuntu 12.04 to replace traditional menus with new HUD

Posted on Jan 27, 2012 by MG1

Ubuntu is set to replace the traditional menu system with a head-up display (HUD), enabling users to type or speak commands in its upcoming April 2012 long term support (LTS) release of the popular Linux distribution. Rather than using the traditional drop down menu, the Ubuntu HUD uses a transparent text box in which you can type or speak what you want to do to perform actions or tasks.
Canonical founder and former CEO Mark Shuttleworth announced the new feature on his blog. "The core idea [of HUD] is to get to a world where people can direct an application to do what they want," he said. "Having stated your intent, the application leads you down a simple journey to get that done."

Google finally allows WP7 users to sync multiple calendars, Microsoft releases guide to switch from Gmail to Hotmail in 3 easy steps

Google finally allows WP7 users to sync multiple calendars, Microsoft releases guide to switch from Gmail to Hotmail in 3 easy steps

Posted on Jan 27, 2012 by MG1

Google has finally enabled Windows Phone 7 users to sync their phone with multiple Google calendars. Up till now WP7 users had to spoof the process by using an iOS device to select the calendars at m.google.com/sync since the feature had always been available on that platform.
Of course this does not mean Google are now Windows Phone fans – their instructions are still for Windows Mobile, a very deprecated platform now.
Microsoft has not made any pretence of being fans of Google, and have taken advantage of the recent brouhaha surrounding Google’s new permission to spy privacy policy to publish a short 3 step guide to moving your Gmail account to Windows Phone 7.

Android’s tablet market share rises to 39 percent in Q4 2011

Android’s tablet market share rises to 39 percent in Q4 2011

Posted on Jan 27, 2012 by MG1

We know that the strategy ultimately ensures success in some ways but we’re still surprised with the number of Android tablets in the world. The latest numbers for Q4 of 2011 have arrived and tablets running Google’s mobile operating system has risen to 39%. While the Android tablet market is gaining steam, it’s probably safe to assume that the sharp rise is likely due to the Kindle Fire.
This new data comes to us from Strategy Analytics, which has counted the Kindle Fire into the Android mix. If this data was collected from Google itself, the market share of Android tablets would likely be a bit lower, as it only counts devices that ship with Google applications installed. Nonetheless, the ...

Windows 8's New Ways to Manage Wireless, Bandwidth

Windows 8's New Ways to Manage Wireless, Bandwidth

Posted on Jan 26, 2012 by MG1

Windows 8 will be a new animal that merges mobile design thinking with that of the traditional PC computing. The clear sign of this is the Metro design that's currently being used in Windows Phone – and to a smaller extent in the latest Xbox 360 dashboard.
The latest Windows 8 innovation shared through the B8 blog is about how the next big Microsoft release will handle wireless connectivity via Wi-Fi and mobile broadband. Specifically, Windows 8 will attempt to make connectivity as easy and as seamless as possible.
While Wi-Fi options are built into current versions of Windows natively, Windows 8 will attempt to integrate mobile broadband functionality into the OS without having to resort to...

Sure, it might not have the marketing flair, nor mindshare of another Linux-based project we know, but that doesn't mean the folks behind KDE haven't been feverishly polishing their take on the perfect desktop environment. That dedication has resulted in version 4.8, which brings forth a bevy of tweaks big and small. Those upgrading will be treated to more layouts in Plasma Workspaces, a new display engine and file-manager, as well as redesigned power management settings. Also on the docket are refinements that improve stability and performance, including groundwork to enable more touch-friendly UIs in the future. Sounds like a win-win to us, so why are you still reading? More info awaits at...

"Android can never be as smooth as iOS" myth busted

"Android can never be as smooth as iOS" myth busted

Posted on Jan 26, 2012 by MG1

Two months ago, a Google intern kicked off a discussion about why Android is laggy: a sore point in the hearts of Android fans, and gave what seemed like a pretty legitimate explanation to non-developers. It spurred a huge discussion not only on the Internet, but right here with arguments being brought by both sides.
In a nutshell, the former Google intern Andrew Munn said that UI rendering is happening as a main thread in Android while in iOS it’s in a dedicated thread given a real-time priority and that is why many find Android laggy. Moreover, Munn suggested that that’s an inherent flaw of the way Android is built. That’s why Android was to remain somewhat laggy despite dual and quad-cor...

There may be many different Android devices in the world today but there are still only a handful of decent custom user interfaces available. Well, some of the first shots of the Motorola RAZR playing nice with Ice Cream Sandwich and Motoblur have arrived and some of you may like the new look.
