iOS 5.1 increases OTA download limit to 50 MB
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleiOS 5
While the new features found in the iOS 5.1 update were fairly minimal, one that snuck under the radar was an increase to the maximum download file size over 3G/4G networks. The new version of iOS allows downloads of up to 50 MBs to be conducted over cellular networks, a fairly sizable increase from the previous 20MB limit.
Accounting for the increase is Apple’s new iPad, which is slated to launch on Friday. The new iPad features an HD Retina display, which will drive application file sizes up as developers build more intensive programs to support the new display and the Retina graphics the devices are capable of providing. Users of the AT&T, Verizon, and upcoming Sprint variants of the iPad...

Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
Google has recently renamed Android Market to Google Play, but not all folks are happy with the change, namely those with select Motorola smartphones who got crappy links included with the brand new app. The update to the application (now in version 3.4.7) has been promptly released by Google to fix the issue users around the Interwebs have reported.
In order to force the update on your phone, hit Application Settings and wipe the Google Play data. This will initialize the newest build to download to your device…

Google May Be Developing Motion Interface for Android
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
A patent filing made public last week suggests that Google is working to turn a device's front-facing camera into a motion-input system, allowing consumers to use gestures instead of greasing up the screen with fingerprints. If granted, the company could reportedly take this patent down several avenues, including incorporating the technology into Android itself, saving the tech for Motorola, or hording the patent for use against rivals Apple and Microsoft.

Dell Plans To Be Ready on Windows 8 Launch Day With Enterprise Tablets
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsTabletsMicrosoftDellWindows 8
Microsoft is rolling a hard six with their tablet strategy in Windows 8, and while it might be a hard sale with iPad crazy consumers, at least in the Enterprise they have a fighting chance. Dell knows this, and plans to be ready to go with tablet offerings for businesses on Windows 8 launch day. The information came from a Bloomberg interview conducted last week in which CEO Michael Dell praised the new Microsoft OS, and claims demand will be strong for a “secure Windows tablet that works with all Windows applications”.

Google pushes Android developers towards use of Google Wallet
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
When developers first started to populate the Android Market, Google didn’t have an in-house solution for in-app transactions. As a result developers turned to third party payment options, such as PayPal, Boku, and Zong. While this solved the problem of enabling payments inside of Android apps, the multiple competing payment platforms hurt the rate at which app users purchased items (the “conversion rate”), because not all potential users would have the necessary payment account set up.
To address this, Google is now pushing developers to adopt the use of Google Wallet for all in-app payments. Users that purchase apps already have a Google Wallet account by default, so while switching the pa...

Google hastily updates Play Store, fixes broken Market on Motorola devices
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMotorolaGoogleAndroid
Motorola Droid RAZR fans were left out in the cold when Google decided to pull the wraps off its revamped content hub. The new Play Store app didn't seem to bond too well with Motorola's Blur OS skin, leaving phones scanning desperately for a non-existent Android Market and trapping users out of the app version of the store. Google's got on it quickly though, with a new Google Play update out now, righting what was once wrong. According to Droid Life, wiping the new hub's application data in settings should coax the update out instantly. And you'd think the two would talk about these things.

Google revamps its Windows Phone app
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftGoogleWindows Phone 7
Google released an updated mobile app for Windows phone devices, adding few cool features to the mix.
First of all, there’s Autocomplete, offering search predictions as you type. This in turn, will give you results faster, making you spend less of your precious mobile data.
Then there’s Voice Search, which removes the need to type your query. Simply tap the microphone icon and say what you want to find.
Finally, Google for Windows Phone can now access your location to provide you with nearby results. For location-specific queries this will save you a ton of time — you don’t actually care about coffee shops and Italian restaurants in other States – all you want to know is which one of them ca...

HTC Sensation Ice Cream Sandwich update is now live in parts of Europe
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsHTCGoogleSensation 4GAndroid 4.0
Reports from around the web suggest some HTC Sensation users in Europe have started getting their serving of Ice Cream Sandwich. While we don’t see the pattern HTC is using to rollout the new firmware, it is clear that at first only folks with unlocked devices are getting Android 4.0.3.
The Taiwanese company is strangely quiet (for such a big news), so we keep listening to other people and their reactions. As far as we’ve understood, alongside Ice Cream Sandwich, HTC is also pushing updated version (3.6) of its Sense UI.

Redsn0w jailbreaking tool updated to support iOS 5.1
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleiOS 5
It hadn’t even been 24 hours since Apple released iOS 5.1, and the hacking community has already let loose the first tethered jailbreaking tool for the updated OS. According to Redmond Pie, the iPhone Dev Team has updated Redsn0w to allow users to jailbreak their iOS 5.1 devices. The jailbreak is tethered, however, so users will be required to connect their devices to a computer each time they are powered on. The exploit works for all devices running iOS 5.1 with the exception of the iPhone 4S and iPad 2.

SetCPU gets an ICS-like overhaul, makes overclocking easier to do
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid 4.0
Rooting has gotten a bit easier in Android land as of late, what with certain OEM's getting officially on board with unlock tools. For those who can claim O.G. residence in this underbelly of Rubin's mobile kingdom, however, a premium app known as SetCPU should ring a familiar bell. That Google Play application, useful for overclocking processors, has recently gotten a face lift, aligning its design more closely with Ice Cream Sandwich's visual flair while nixing the previously complicated interface and its dense jargon-y fluff in the process. Included in this version 2.3.0 update is a new frequency slider, governor menu for adjusting processor scaling, added support for multi-core devices a...

More evidence surfaces for Windows Phone 8 running on Windows 8’s NT kernel
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 8
Windows Phone’s next big update is truly going to be huge - it will bring the operating system to version 8 and along with that will introduce change to the very core of the mobile platform. More evidence has surfaced cementing the notion that Windows Phone 8 will run on the NT kernel, the same kernel Microsoft uses in Windows 8. This will mean that Windows CE is finally become history after more than 15 years of service.
In layman's terms, a kernel is the main element of an operating system bridging communication between apps and the actual hardware on a device. Windows Phone is built to be kernel-neutral, so the change won't affect existing application.

Android browser becomes most popular mobile web browser besides the one on iOS
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
The built-in Android web browser has become the most popular mobile web browser, according to StatCounter. Android’s browser overcame Research in Motion’s BlackBerry browser in March 2011 to capture fourth place. Since then, the browser has grown at a rapid rate, passing Nokia, Apple and Opera’s mobile web browsers. In February 2012, Android had a 22.67% market share, beating out Opera’s 21.7% share for the first time ever. Apple’s iPhone browser continues to make gains with a share of 21.06%, while Nokia and BlackBerry continue to fall with an 11.24% and 6.53% market share. StatCounter does, however, account for the iPhone and iPod touch browsers separately, and combined they propel Apple’s...

Microsoft Device Center beta released for Windows 8
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 8
Microsoft has released a beta version of its Windows 8 Device Center. Designed with the Metro look and feel in mind, Device Center is a desktop application that lets Windows 8 Consumer Preview users control their Microsoft mouse and keyboard settings, combining the existing IntelliPoint and IntelliType software into one application.
Microsoft also revealed it plans to update its Touch Mouse for Windows 8 around the general availability of the new operating system later this year. We tested out Device Center with a Microsoft Touch Mouse and found that two and three finger gestures are limited to the desktop for now. The thumb flicking gesture works in Metro to navigate backwards or forwards, ...
