Chrome OS tested on Samsung’s Exynos 5250 ARM chip: could Chrome join the mobile OS wars?

Google’s Chrome operating system is being tested on Samsung’s Exynos 5250 ARM chip. Possibly, on a new device called “Daisy.” Why is this interesting? So far, there are only two Chrome OS-flavored notebooks and both are running on Intel Atom chips.
Add to this with the fact that Samsung has previously explicitly mentioned that its Exynos 5250 chip aims to end up first on high-end tablets, and only later on smartphones, so you have an interesting combination. Could Google introduce another rival to its own Android operating system? This wouldn’t make much sense, but that’s exactly the suggestion you’d arrive at logically.

As we fully expected, the comments on our recent post about AT&T's apparent decision to not push out the lastest bugfix version of Windows Phone, 8107, have expressed a good deal of unhappiness. However, one comment in particular caught our eye, from scrapplejoe, which points out a thread at neogaf suggesting Visual Voicemail is present on the Lumia 900. In fact, there's an even deeper backstory involving a method of forced updating and clever data plan switching first discovered at xda-developers, with which it's possible to get Visual Voicemail working on a Nokia Lumia 800, Focus Flash, or even other devices on AT&T. Nokia Play To brings DLNA streaming to Windows Phone

Nokia has released the beta version of its new Play To app, which will allow its Windows Phone users to stream content from their mobiles to other DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) connected devices.
These days DLNA streaming is found in most mid and high-end smartphones, with both Android and iPhone handsets offering various ways to share content with other devices.

iOS 5.1 code shows references to LTE phone calls, FaceTime

Strings in the iOS 5.1 firmware make reference to 4G phone calling, and using FaceTime over 4G, notes Cydia developer Krishna Sagar. One message in the code reads, "Enabling 4G will end your phone call. Are you sure you want to enable 4G?" Others refer to enabling and disabling 4G on FaceTime calls, as well as regular voice ones.
The code appears to back up regular reports that Apple is working on an LTE iPhone. More unusual is the reference to FaceTime, since even LTE-equipped iPads are still unable to make FaceTime calls over cellular networks. Congressmen ask devs of 34 iOS apps about user privacy

In the wake of the Path address book fiasco, Congressmen Henry Waxman (D-CA) and G.K. Butterfield (D-NC) have followed up their initial query to Apple about privacy issues by contacting the people and companies behind 34 iOS apps. The list includes Tim Cook (again), concerning Apple's own Find My Friends, Mark Zuckerberg and Path's CEO Dave Morin, among others. The letters themselves are open for viewing on the Committee on Energy and Commerce's website, and include questions about exactly how many times the apps have been downloaded, what information they transmit back from user's devices and what happens to that data. Google Voice gets tighter integration with Android 4.0 ICS

Google has released an update to the Google Voice app for Android that gives it greater integration with the native dialer in Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The new integration lets Google Voice users access their Google Voice messages right from within the call log of the native dialer app. Users can control the playback speed of voicemails to speed up or slow down the message as they listen to it. The new feature can be activated by toggling the "Voicemail display" option in the settings section of the updated Google Voice app. The update is available for free from the Google Play Store now, though the new integration is only available to Android 4.0 devices.

British operator-branded versions of the Samsung Galaxy S II have started getting their Ice Cream Sandwich servings with Three leading the way, allowing its SGS2 users to get the latest version of Android as we speak.
Meanwhile, Vodafone is still testing the new software and has rather released what it calls the “preparatory” update, which should reportedly make your Galaxy S II ready for Android 4. Samsung Galaxy S II on Three gets Ice Cream Sandwich

Samsung Galaxy S II owners who are signed up to Three can now update their phones to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). The network provider has made the new operating system available via Samsung Kies.
Samsung had previously announced that the software update would start to roll out to its devices from yesterday, 19 March, and it has remained true to its word. Three is the first network to announce its availability in the UK, however.
Previously, Samsung had released a statement saying that eventual roll-out dates for ICS would be left to individual providers. "The availability of software upgrades in the UK will be dependent upon each network’s own software approvals process," it said.

Windows Phone outselling Symbian in the UK

Microsoft’s market share in the United States may have been slipping as of late, but what about in the UK? According to market research firm Kantar Worldpanel, Microsoft and Nokia’s gambit may be paying off: Windows Phone 7 has outsold Symbian handsets for the first time, and the Nokia Lumia 800 is proving popular across Europe too.
According to the research, 2.5% of UK consumers bought a Windows Phone handset compared to 2.4% for Symbian over a three month period that ended on February 19th. Not only that, but the Nokia Lumia 800 accounted for 87% of all Windows Phone sales in Europe. Windows Phone apparently does best in Germany, with it accounting for 3.1% of the market.

A number of manufacturers have been tipped as Windows 8 tablet makers eyeing an October release date, including HP, Dell, Lenovo, Acer and Asus.
The word comes by way of Digitimes and its supply chain contacts, who also finger Sony, Toshiba, Samsung, and Lenovo as working on Windows 8 tablets for an early 2013 launch.
Meanwhile Nokia, Microsoft's bestest bud and tablet wildcard, may release a 10-inch ARM-based Windows 8 tablet in November 2012 to complete the pack.

Google releases update to Android SDK

Google has announced an update to its Android software developer kit tools and Eclipse plugin, bringing the SDK to Revision 17. The new version brings a number of new features as well as bug fixes.
The update offers improved Lint support in Eclipse, including the ability to suppress Lint warning in Java code. Improvements have also been made to the build systems for Eclipse and Ant. R17 also provides Intel x86 platform virtualization support and experimental multi-touch input (using a tethered Android device) in the emulator as well as an updated Support Library.

TiVo updates remote app for iOS, adds new layout

TiVo have updated its eponymous remote-management app for iOS to provide a new look for browsing, making it easier for users to discover and learn about new TV shows or movies. New categories have been added, such as "4 Star Movies This Week" and "2012 Academy Award Winners." The update also let users make more changes to Series4 and Series3 DVRs remotely, and adds the ability to create a wishlist along with other improvements.

Samsung releases ICS update source code for Galaxy S II

Source code is for modders what chum is to sharks, and Samsung is stirring up the waters in the Samsung Galaxy S II community with the source code for the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update. The update has been working its way out to Europe and Asia, and now Samsung has released the source code for it.
It should be noted that this is obviously the code for the base version of the Galaxy S II (model GT-I9100), so there are no guarantees that the code will be able to be turned into custom ROMs for carrier variants of the device, like the AT&T Skyrocket, etc. Still, it could go a long way in helping modders create custom ROMs. It could definitely help out Team Douche in its work on Cyanogen...
