Motorola XOOM tablets reportedly getting Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich

Reports are coming in that Motorola's XOOM Android tablets are starting to receive Google's Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system update. According to Android Central, an email has been sent out to select XOOM users stating, "Thanks for your patience as we've waited for this project to begin. Because we are dealing with a Google Experience Device (GED) we have less insight to timing than we would usually have. However, I'm happy to announce that we will start the update this evening. Because it was delayed a few days, we will also have additional time to test; we will let it run through the weekend." Let us know if you have seen your ICS update.

The Motorola Defy Mini is a very compact ruggedized handset running Gingerbread, but what makes it even more attractive is its affordable price tag. Motorola unveiled the Defy Mini with a 3.2-inch display, and the device is a tinier sibling of the original Motorola Defy.
The 3.2” screen is water and scratch-resistant, dust proof and comes with Gorilla Glass and a resolution of 320 x 480 pixels. On the back there’s a modest 3-megapixel camera with LED flash, while up front Motorola has included a VGA snapper for video calls.

Motorola recently posted a message in its XOOM owners forums alerting customers that the company is working on a confidential project for the XOOM. Any owner of the Wi-Fi-only “Google Experience Device” version of the XOOM can choose to participate. What remains unknown, however, is what the “confidential project” exactly is. We doubt Motorola would spend too much time adding new features or making too many tweaks to the tablet now that a new model has launched, so we think it’s more likely that the company is working on a test version of Ice Cream Sandwich. Motorola Xoom receives early Android 4.0.3 build as Google adds source code to AOSP

Since Android 4.0.3 is the "base version" for Ice Cream Sandwich, Google has added the source code for it to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). The build supports two devices — we've already seen the update roll out for the Nexus S, but the other is a device that was also launched in direct partnership with Google: the Motorola Xoom (Wi-Fi). True to form, the enterprising hackers at XDA-Developers have already compiled it into a bootable ROM for the Motorola Xoom.
The build is certainly not for the faint of heart: the camera doesn't work and there are likely plenty of other bugs, and as an AOSP-build it also doesn't include Google Apps. All that might be the bad news, but the good news ...

Last month, European Wi-Fi Xooms received the latest version of Honeycomb, and now it's coming to its more mobile 3G-bearing sibling. Motorola has posted a rather lengthy explanation of the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade process to its corporate blog, where it details the four major steps that need to occur before a software update is made available to users. Unfortunately, the company doesn't provide any extra information as to exactly when the Android 4.0 upgrade for existing devices will be released or when it plans to launch new devices with Android 4.0 already on them. It did reiterate its previous commitment to bring the new software to the DROID RAZR, DROID BIONIC, and XOOM tablet, but it has yet to provide an exact timeframe.

Motorola has started rolling out Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for its Milestone 2 smartphone in Europe. That, however, doesn’t mean you can get it right away; the new software will be released in stages so even if you can’t download it right now, check back again within few days.
The American handset maker turned to Facebook to spread the good news and we really applaud them for supporting their existing customers. Sure enough, they’re kinda late – but better late than never.

Google to keep Android free in spite of Motorola purchase

During a tour of South Korea, Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt reassured the company's Android partners that the purchase of Motorola Mobility would not affect the availability of the Android operating system, and that it would remain free to use. South Korea is home to Samsung, which is the largest Android device manufacturer in the world, and LG, which also produces a number of Android smartphones and tablets each year.

Android Gingerbread available for Verizon's Motorola DROID 2 Global and DROID Pro

Verizon Wireless has informed us that it has begun pushing out Android 2.3 Gingerbread firmware updates for two of its Motorola smartphones. The DROID Pro and the global version of the DROID 2 are the lucky recipients. Users can download the update by going into the Settings section of their phones and heading to About Phone and then System Updates.
Among the improvements that users of both devices can expect are improved battery monitoring and power management, multi-touch keyboard support, the Gingerbread download manager, and a new user interface and color scheme.

It is hard to believe that after all of those months that Verizon customers were eagerly waiting, the Motorola DROID BIONIC could be wiped out by the announcement of the upcoming Motorola DROID RAZR. Many owners of the DROID BIONIC feel slighted after Motorola showed off the extremely thin and sexy design of the DROID RAZR, not to mention the Super AMOLED display that does away with the often criticized pentile display found on the older of the two DROID models. When Google acquired Motorola over the summer, the biggest concern was that the relationship balance would shift away from the other manufacturers. Google reassured us that Motorola wouldn’t automatically be first in line to work on Nexus handsets, and Google ex-CEO (now Chairman) Eric Schmidt recently reiterated the sentiment in an interview.
“The Android ecosystem is the No. 1 priority, and that we won’t do anything with Motorola, or anybody else by the way, that would screw up the dynamics of that industry. We need strong, hard competition among all the Android players. We won’t play favorites in the way people are concerned about.”
