Posted on May 30, 2012 by MG3

We have heard that Facebook has a new impetus to develop a mobile platform of its own. Now Paris-based Paul Amsellem, managing director of Mobile Network Group, a mobile marketing company, suggests the company could get into the game most easily by buying Nokia and releasing a Windows Phone.
"Facebook needs somebody with an understanding of networking, technology, carrier relationships and logistics," he said. "They can acquire one of these two players for not a lot of money."

A Chinese edition of the Release Preview, however, has been circulating around the Web prior to the software’s official debut. The build reportedly includes new Metro-style Sports, Travel, and News apps, along with an updated boot screen, cursors, wallpapers and multiple monitor desktop improvements. Microsoft’s latest operating system is rumored to launch in October in three different versions, Windows 8, Windows 8 Pro and Windows RT. Is no-cost desktop software development dead on Windows 8?

Is no-cost desktop software development dead on Windows 8?

Posted on May 28, 2012 by MG3

Microsoft's core focus with Windows 8 is to introduce a new set of applications that are touch friendly, fullscreen, and designed to match the company's Metro design. Windows developers who wish to create Metro style apps will be able to take advantage of Microsoft's free-to-use Visual Studio 11 Express, but those who want to keep creating desktop applications may need to pay for the privilege.
Ars Technica reports that Microsoft's free upcoming Visual Studio 11 Express environment will only let developers create Metro style applications and nothing desktop-related. The change demonstrates Microsoft's focus on Metro style apps, but there's concern that the barrier to building Windows 8 deskt...

Posted on May 28, 2012 by MG3

An 80-inch touchscreen Windows 8 tablet already hangs on the wall of Microsoft CEO’s Steve Ballmer - and it could soon be made available to the public.
This is according to Frank Shaw, Microsoft vice-president, who said of Ballmer’s giant tablet added: “He’s got rid of his phone, he’s got rid of his notepaper. It’s [the tablet)] his whiteboard, his email machine, and it’s a device we’re going to sell.”
Interestingly the current version of the device - the one that hangs on Ballmer’s wall - runs on Windows 8 it but is actually made by a different manufacturer.

Microsoft: Windows XP costs businesses five times more than Windows 7

Microsoft: Windows XP costs businesses five times more than Windows 7

Posted on May 28, 2012 by MG3

While many of us are thinking about the eventual shift to Windows 8, Microsoft is still trying to convince a number of businesses that moving from XP to Windows 7 is the right decision. To help get its point across, the company sponsored a white paper by analyst firm IDC that looks at the costs associated with the two different operating systems — and it turns out the using XP can be quite a bit more expensive for medium-to-large organizations. According to IDC — which interviewed nine different companies as part of the study — the IT and "end user labor" costs associated with XP can be up to five times more compared to using Windows 7.

While Dell has previously promised a Windows 8 enterprise tablet "on the exact day" the new operating system debuts, we haven't heard any firm plans for its consumer offerings. Neowin has posted two separate images of what it claims are Dell's two Windows 8 tablets. The XPS 12 is said to be a convertible 12.5-inch tablet (similar to the company's Inspiron Duo) with an edge-to-edge Gorilla Glass display, due in late 2012.

Windows 8 to drop Aero UI for desktop

Windows 8 to drop Aero UI for desktop

Posted on May 28, 2012 by MG3

Microsoft revealed today that Windows 8 will no longer have an Aero-style interface.
In a blog post, Microsoft director of program management Jensen Harris announced the change for Windows 8's desktop interface.
Instead of the Aero-style glass effect that was introduced in Windows Vista, Windows 8 will feature a more flat, neutral colored UI.
As Harris put it, "we have moved beyond Aero Glass - flattening surfaces, removing reflections, and scaling back distracting gradients."
This is a shift from what was being said last year, with the Windows 8 desktop being dubbed "Aero Lite."
And as of March 1, The Windows 8 Consumer Preview also still featured Aero's transparent windows.

Microsoft pulling free development tools for Windows 8 desktop apps, only lets you ride the Metro for free

Microsoft pulling free development tools for Windows 8 desktop apps, only lets you ride the Metro for free

Posted on May 28, 2012 by MG3

Microsoft has instituted a big change with its free Visual Studio 11 Express suite that's leaving some current- and soon-to-be Windows 8 developers up in arms: it's pulling support for creating anything but Metro-native apps. After 11 becomes the norm, desktop developers will need to either cling to Visual Studio 2010 for dear life or fork over the $500 for Visual Studio 11 Professional. Programmers won't have the option of backdoor coding, either, with both the compiler and toolchain being pulled from Windows' framework. The situation doesn't represent the end of the world for some developers -- more established pros don't balk at a $500 price, and third-party tools will likely live on -- b...

Facebook for Windows Phone rolls in threaded messaging, tagging, kitchen sink

Facebook for Windows Phone rolls in threaded messaging, tagging, kitchen sink

Posted on May 28, 2012 by MG3

Some have called Microsoft's Facebook app for Windows Phone a red-headed stepchild to the Android and iOS darlings, but it's making up for lost time in good fashion with a 2.5 update. Those who live a Metro life now get full Facebook conversation threads with group support, so they're not left out of the loop when a friend mentions the pub he wanted to visit two days ago. Along with this more conversational addition, it's now possible to tag a friend or a place in a post using plain "with" and "at" statements, and the seemingly inescapable Like button has reached comments for Windows Phone owners. There's more control over posts and active post links in the mix as well, so you'll find a surf...
