Android 4.0 “Ice Cream Sandwich” is now available on the first non-Nexus phone in the world, but it’s not from Samsung or HTC, as you might expect. Instead, Huawei can lay claim to the honour of being first out of the gate, while almost everyone else was stuck showing off new Android 2.3 “Gingerbread” phones at CES two weeks ago.
The rather charming Huawei Honor, with a 4-inch display, 1.4GHz processor and 8-megapixel camera is the first phone to ship with Android Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box, apart from the Google-backed Samsung Galaxy Nexus (The older Nexus S has also already received the update).

The new fad in Android models seems to be smaller form factors with mid-to high end specs. Just the other day, we told you about the Sony Ericsson Kumquat, which fits into this mold. HTC Flyer to get treated to ICS in Q1 2012?

HTC’s 7-inch stylus-supporting Flyer has seen its price slashed to the very affordable $299, then it was just recently updated to 3.2 Honeycomb, and now it’s confirmed to get further up in the Android hierarchy to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) in Q1 2012.
The update wasn’t officially confirmed, though - it slipped in a customer service rep mention in France, so we’d take it with a grain of salt.

Canada’s TELUS is rolling out an OTA update for the HTC Desire HD, bringing the smartphone up to Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread. Aside from the “standard” features Gingerbread brings to the table such as improved copy/paste, UI refinements, improved power management and video calls support, there are some Desire HD specific stuff included, most notably the new version (3.0) of the HTC Sense UI. Moreover, there’s the HTC Watch app from where you can rent or buy the latest movies and shows, as well as a number of bug fixes under the hood that improve the stability of the device.

HTC loses to Apple, several Android phones banned in the U.S.

The U.S. International Trade Commission finally issued its decision on a patent dispute between Apple and HTC. The determination states that several of the manufacturer's Android-based handsets will be banned from sale and import in the United States on April 12, 2012. HTC says not to worry though -- they have a plan.
HTC dodged the bullet for 8 of the 10 patent accusations made in April, but those last two were still good enough to land an injunction from the ITC. The determination blocks several of HTC's Android-based devices from import and outright bans the sale of those devices in the U.S. It is currently unknown what exact phones are subject to the injunction.

Apple Takes One Small Step Against HTC, One Giant Leap Against Android

Apple has been duking it out with Android manufacturers for the past couple years, and very few are safe. Samsung has already suffered some big losses with the banning of its Galaxy Tab in Germany and Australia. HTC, however, has remained mostly safe from Apple’s wrath.
In July the Taiwanese manufacturer had a close call, as Administrative Law Judge Carl Charneski ruled that HTC was infringing two of Apple’s proposed 10 patents. Of course, before any serious action could be taken the ITC needed to have a look, which is exactly what’s happened.

ITC bans U.S. import of multiple HTC devices in Apple patent ruling

A judge with the United States International Trade Commission (ITC) ruled Monday that HTC is guilty of infringing Apple’s patents in several devices. The ITC also ordered a ban on the import of several of HTC’s smartphones although it is unclear which models are affected. Well what do you know – HTC released the Android 2.3.5 update for its low-end Wildfire S smartphone. Along with the latest version of Gingerbread, there’s also the new Sense software (version 2.1), which mimics some of the aspects of the Sense UI on the HTC Sensation. However, you shouldn’t expect all of the features since there’s not enough horse power under the Wildfire S’ hood. HTC and Verizon Wireless have apparently restarted the deployment of the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the original DROID Incredible. Initially released back in September, the companies pulled the update shortly after it went out for undisclosed reasons. Here we are over two months later and users are reporting left and right that the upgrade is once again available to them. Users should get a notification on their devices when the update is ready to be downloaded and installed, or they can manually check through the Settings app on the phone itself.

HTC talks patent deals to fight Apple, Android 4.0 updates

HTC outlined some of its Android plans on Monday that included both the courtroom and its products. In a far-ranging briefing, the company's CEO Peter Chou told Reuters his company was "open-minded" to the prospect of buying patents to escalate its fight with Apple. There weren't any specific plans, he said.
The company has so far had a tough time in legal battles with Apple, being found in violation in one complaint and having other attempts shot down. It has only made small gestures towards improving its ability to contest Apple's claims, buying S3 after a patent win and borrowing from Google and Motorola for countersuits.

If you're still clinging fast to Google's first ever Nexus device, now might be the time to start eyeing an upgrade.
