Custom HTC WP7 ROM’s Iminent?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftHTCWindows Phone 7
Windows Phone Hacker have just reported that the Dark Forces Team (DFT) have successfully created an RSPL / HSPL solution for a majority of HTC’s Windows Phones. This of course comes our way via XDA-Developers. If you are unfamiliar, HSPL is the bootloader that allows for custom ROM’s to be loaded onto phones. Chefs on XDA-Developers have done an amazing job releasing custom Windows Mobile 6.x ROM’s for the past few years. In fact, this was normally the only way you could get WM6.5 on your device, because software updates were very inconsistent between phone manufacturers.
With Microsoft’s new update approach for all devices, will HSPL be necessary for Windows Phone 7? There are a couple...

All AT&T Android Phones Released In 2011 Will Get Gingerbread
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsSamsungLGHTCMotorolaPantechGoogleCaptivateAndroid 2.3ATRIX 4GInfuse 4GInspire 4GPhoenixCrossover
The HTC Status might be a sort-of-weird, kind-of-gimmicky (with its dedicated Facebook button and all) little piece of kit, but it’s got at least one thing going for it: it’s the only phone on AT&T running on the latest (phone-friendly) version of Android: v2.3, or “Gingerbread”. Not for long, though.
AT&T has just confirmed that all of the Android phones they released in 2011 will be getting the Gingerbread upgrade treatment.
The phones AT&T confirmed:
HTC Inspire 4G
LG Phoenix
Motorola Atrix 4G
Pantech Crossover
Samsung Captivate
Samsung Infuse 4G
That sure looks like all of AT&T’s 2011 Android line up so far, to me. Anyone spot anything that’s missing?
For those of you whose pre-2011 AT&T...

HTC Desire Gingerbread action coming in July
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsHTCGoogleDesireAndroid 2.3
The will it, won't it saga seems close to an end now with HTC stating that the Android 2.3 update for the HTC Desire "will begin rolling out...by the end of July".
The statement was made on the UK HTC Facebook page - the same place the company stated back in June that the device wouldn't be getting the update as "there isn’t enough memory to allow us both to bring Gingerbread and keep the HTC Sense experience on the HTC Desire".
HTC, just a day later, backtracked though saying: "Contrary to what we said earlier, we are going to bring Gingerbread to HTC Desire" and admitting that "to resolve Desire's memory issue and enable the upgrade to Gingerbread" it would be ditching some apps.

HTC claims Desire will get Gingerbread by the end of July
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsHTCGoogleDesireAndroid 2.3
Android OS upgrades are the most fickle of all things, even when you are told over and over that it will be coming soon, soon never seems to arrive. At this point T-Mobile G2X users may never see their update even though they have another reason to believe, because they've been hearing that it is "coming soon" or coming "in less than a month" since the phone was released back in April. HTC, however, has been better about upgrades than many manufacturers, and they are claiming now that HTC Desire users will be getting Gingerbread by the end of the month.
At first, Desire users were told not to even expect Gingerbread, then a day later, they recanted and said Gingerbread would be coming to th...

HTC Desire Android 2.3 update enters testing phase
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsHTCGoogleDesireAndroid 2.3
HTC has announced that its long-awaited Gingerbread update for the HTC Desire has entered internal testing.
The update will provide the HTC Desire with a slightly stripped-down version of the software, with some apps having to be abandoned to free up memory required by the Gingerbread update.
It's been a rollercoaster ride for Desire owners; HTC had originally promised the update, then decided it couldn't deliver it and then changed its mind again a day later, saying that it would be bringing the update out after all.
Gingerbone of contention
The latest update from the company reads: "Hi all - We're excited to share that we are testing our build of Gingerbread for HTC Desire and will start d...

Orange UK's HTC Desire HD getting Android 2.3 update as we speak
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsHTCOrangeGoogleDesire HDAndroid 2.3
Orange UK and HTC have started rolling out Android 2.3 Gingerbread updates for the Desire HD. If you’re in the “affected” group you can already check to see whether a new update is available. If it isn’t – don’t worry. I’m sure HTC’s servers are dying at the moment as the company tries to push the software to all users.
You probably know what Gingerbread brings, so I won’t repeat it here. Still I’ll mention the improved Copy/Paste which actually makes the functionality usable.
As usual, we remind you it’s good practice to backup all of your PIM data (contacts and calendars) before updating. Your stuff may be in the cloud, but having a local copy is always a plus. When you’re done with that —...

HTC claims Windows Phone 7 dominance, sells 1 in 2 WP7 handsets
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftHTCWindows Phone 7
There have been much speculation regarding the contribution each Windows Phone 7 OEM makes to the ecosystem.
Now HTC’s senior executive vice president Fred Liu told CENS HTC is the major player in the Windows Phone 7 market, selling 1 out of every 2 Windows Phones sold.
This is of course despite 4 other OEMs, including giants like LG and Samsung, vying for the business.
HTC also went on to say they sell 2 out of every 10 Android phones. This allows us to see that little more than 10% of HTC’s business is from Microsoft’s OS, which is clearly not much*.
Windows Phone 7 therefore suffers from being dominated by one OEM who is not deeply invested in the OS. With Nokia jumping in head first...

HTC Glamor image leaks, eye candy for the ladies
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsHTCGoogleAndroid
It's not entirely clear why when a company decides to make a product targeted to women, they usually just wrap it up in candy colors and fluff, as if the target market is Barbie.
In the case of the HTC Glamor, though, it makes sense, since the most likely buyers will be teenage girls, judging by the jolly colors in a leaked picture of HTC's upcoming feminine handset.

Hulu Plus for Android is available now... for six devices
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsHTCMotorolaGoogleNexus OneAndroidDROID XDROID 2ATRIX 4GNexus SInspire 4G
The good news is that Hulu Plus for Android is on the market, but the bad news is that you may not be able to install it yet. The official Hulu Blog has just been updated with news that six phones -- Nexus One, Nexus S, HTC Inspire 4G, Motorola Droid II, Motorola Droid X, and the Motorola Atrix -- are on the compatible list with "additional device announcements" due later in the year. While there's some crossover with the list of Netflix-compatible devices, it's hardly complete and many flagship phones are still missing. Here's hoping the tweakers can work their magic on that apk and get it running for the rest of us, whether we're shelling out $7.99 a month or just want to leech some Chappe...

HTC Thunderbolt getting Android 2.3.4 update, Skype Video on June 30th
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsHTCGoogleAndroid 2.3ThunderBolt
HTC Thunderbolt owners, here’s a piece of good news for you. Your LTE-enabled smartphone will get the Android 2.3.4 update on June 30th! And while that’s great news for itself, there’s more — aside from the latest flavor of Gingerbread, the software upgrade will also bring video calls, including GTalk and check this, Skype Video. Yep, we’ve been waiting this for quite some time now and had to rely on other apps like Tango to beam our ugly faces to the unlucky recipient on the other side of the line. No more, he or she will soon be able to “enjoy” the sight using the familiar Skype interface. That said, I do expect to lose a contact or two from my Skype list in the next few days, but hey – so...
