Sony starting Xperia Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade

Sony has officially announced that it will start its Android 4.0 upgrade for the 2011 line of Xperia smartphones today. Initially, this update is for Xperia arc S, Xperia neo V, and Xperia ray owners located in Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, Finland, and Norway. The software rollout will expand to other global markets over the next 4 to 6 weeks.
The Ice Cream Sandwich update is not being conducted over the air, therefore, you will need to tether your device to a Mac or PC. Those with eligible handsets can head on over to http://www.sonymobile.com/update and follow the instructions to perform the upgrade.

Android makes up nearly 70% of mobile market in China

If you've been wondering where Android's huge growth has been coming from, well look no further, because we've got the answer: China. The big green machine has more than doubled its share of the smartphone market in China in less than a year, and since we recently found out that China has almost 1 billion mobile users, that means some big numbers from Android. Of course, that 1 billion number is the total number of cell phone users in the country, whereas the recent numbers for Android is specific to smartphones, so we don't know exactly how many Android devices are in the wild in China.

Droid RAZR soak test suddenly shifts to ICS test?

We reported last week that the Droid RAZR soak test was not going to include Android 4.0 – Ice Cream Sandwich. Today, the story got more complicated. A tipster speaking to Droid-Life suggested that ICS was inserted at a late date into the soak test. Apparently, the admin of the Motorola soak test forum said the following:

IMDb for Android update adds 720p trailers

The official IMDb app for Android has been updated to support streaming high definition trailers. Users can now choose between 720p, 480p, and "standard resolution," and have the option to set independent quality rates for Wi-Fi and mobile data. There's not much else going in the update other than the new streaming options, but IMDb does say its taken care of a few bugs as well. Either way, it makes a fine alternative to iOS's iTunes Movie Trailers app for Android users. So, what will be the first trailer you check out on the new app? We know what our choice was.

Facebook, Dropbox login credentials vulnerable to theft on iOS and Android

Security researcher Gareth Wright "stumbled into" a way to make one iOS or Android device think it's logged into the Facebook account of another. Apparently, the method also works with Dropbox, The Next Web reports. By simply copying a "plist" from your iOS or Android device and pasting it into the same directory on another device (using a free Mac app like iExplorer), anyone can easily make Facebook and Dropbox (and presumably some other apps) think they are you. Best Buy says ICS for the RAZR delayed, Rezound still on for Friday

Droid-Life got ahold of an internal employee memo Best Buy sent out yesterday, updating employees on the status of Ice Cream Sandwich updates for some of Verizon’s most popular phones. First, Best Buy told employees what we already reported to you – that the updates headed to the Droid RAZR and RAZR MAXX aren’t going to be ICS, they will be bug fixes.
We’re not sure that translates as ICS being “delayed”; there was never anything but speculation that today’s soak test for RAZR devices would be Android 4.0, so Best Buy may have simply jumped the gun with their previous announcement.

Android marches on with 850,000 devices activated daily

With the Android Army growing ever-strong, it’s been a bit ridiculous to see how fast the geeky operating system has skyrocketed to where it is today. Larry Page, CEO of Google, posted an update for 2012 on the Google Investor website today and it seems like Android’s growth hasn’t ceased by a long shot.
Fast forward to today. Android is on fire, and the pace of mobile innovation has never been greater. Over 850,000 devices are activated daily through a network of 55 manufacturers and more than 300 carriers.

Nexus S 4G ICS update starts rolling out

A few weeks ago we told you Android 4.0 was coming to the Nexus S 4G soon, then just a few days ago we saw a leaked update based on Android 4.0.4. Sprint just let us know that the update is officially rolling out, starting now. The update brings a number of new enhancements from Ice Cream Sandwich, including Android Beam, a new camera interface with panorama mode and the new UI enhancements in Android 4.0 that we've come to love. Sprint's email says that the update will be automatically downloaded to the user's phone when it is available, so keep an eye out for a prompt to apply. Meet Cid, the harbinger of a new CyanogenMod era

The team behind the popular Android ROM CyanogenMod has unveiled a new mascot, reflecting the ROM's growth from a small enthusiast project to an AOSP (Android Open Source Project) behemoth with over a million downloads. The new mascot is called Cid (short for Cyanogen ID), and it represents "each user’s unique place in [the] community." Those of you following the development of CyanogenMod 9, which is based on the Android 4.0 firmware, will know that the team is doing things a little differently this time round.

The latest comScore numbers have hit the street; quick, all you fanbois need to go sharpen your pitchforks for the ensuing debate! Are they gone? Ok, let’s take a sober look at the numbers before they get back!
In some sense comScore is just reporting more of the same – Android and iOS grew their share of the smartphone market, while Microsoft and RIM continue to shed market share. This quarter’s numbers are punctuated by the fact that Android has now eclipsed the 50% barrier for all smartphones owned in the U.S.

HTC working on an Android-based media player?

File this under rumors but it seems HTC is working on an Android-based media player. Guess they like Apple’s iPod Touch sales figures and since Samsung is already doing it – why not give it a shot? Personally I don’t get the point of such devices — since my phone does all that plus allows me to make phone calls — but that’s me.

A functional Android Ice Cream Sandwich build for the one and only Samsung Galaxy Note has leaked on the Internets, and it even comes as a trendy one-click installer Odin file.
Don't expect the Premium Suite with this leak, just Android 4.0 covered in a layer of TouchWiz, but it should be good to play around with until the official thing hits this quarter. Your internal memory gets wiped during install, so make sure you move the stuff out temporarily while updating.

ICS reaches 2.9 percent of active Android devices, 63.7 percent still on Gingerbread

As we check back in on Android's Platform Versions dashboard for the first time since January, we can finally see notable growth in the percentage of devices running some flavor of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, up for 0.6 percent then to 2.9 percent. That's likely fueled by the release of updates for the Samsung Galaxy S II and HTC Sensation family of devices, and is a sharp uptick from last month when it registered on 1.6 percent.
