Velocity Micro made to sign Microsoft patent deal on Android

Velocity Micro made to sign Microsoft patent deal on Android

Posted on Jun 30, 2011 by MG1

Velocity Micro on Wednesday was the second in as many days to be pushed into signing a patent deal with Microsoft over Android. The deal will see royalties paid on every Cruz tablet sold. Company chief Randy Copeland spun the loss by arguing that it would help lead to "exciting new Cruz tablets" later on.
The deal immediately follows one with General Dynamics and shows Microsoft now turning most of its attention to smaller Android device makers located inside the US. Most of its early focus on royalty collection was on larger phone designers like HTC.
Microsoft believes it owns technology inherent to Android. Most, however, see the company as simply trying to give Android an arbitrary price ...

TBH app leaks Gingerbread for Droid Charge

TBH app leaks Gingerbread for Droid Charge

Posted on Jun 30, 2011 by MG1

Team Black Hat's got a trick or two up its (we assume) matching black sleeve and it smells like Gingerbread 2.3.3 to us. Released via the hacking outfit's eponymous non-Android market app, this unofficial upgrade ups your Droid Charge's ante -- literally, as the app costs $2.99. Available in both carrier-bloat and non-bloated varieties, custom ROM-flashing addicts can now take this leak for a spin, and always downgrade via P3Droid's handy tweeted directions. Cost-conscious Charge owners shouldn't feel sidelined since the generous blokes behind TBH intend on distributing this gratis... in the next 48 hours. If waiting's not your game and you need this now, be sure to check the source for a bl...

Motorola DEFY on T-Mobile UK finally getting Android 2.2 Froyo

Motorola DEFY on T-Mobile UK finally getting Android 2.2 Froyo

Posted on Jun 30, 2011 by MG1

Most owners of the Motorola DEFY in the UK have probably already received the update to Android 2.2 Froyo that was released a few weeks back, but those who happen to have bought their DEFY through T-Mobile have been left in the lurch. They shouldn't be upset for too much longer, though, as T-Mobile has announced that users can expect the update to roll out at the beginning of July. Android 2.2 Froyo brings a number of improvements, including faster performance and the ability to move apps to the SD card. T-Mobile users will probably be happy to get the latest and greatest from April 2010, but I wouldn't hold my breath for a 2.3 Gingerbread update for the DEFY.

Microsoft collects licensing fees from two small Android manufacturers

Microsoft collects licensing fees from two small Android manufacturers

Posted on Jun 30, 2011 by MG1

Two small Android OEMs, Velocity Micro and General Dynamics, each cut a check payable to the order of Microsoft to take care of licensing fees that allow the pair to use the Android OS. Even though Android is considered Google's baby-and rightly so-the gang at Redmond still have some patents involved in the software which the company feels it should be paid for to license to users. The amount of the payments to Microsoft has not been disclosed.
While Velocity Micro and General Dynamics are two small minnows in a sea of sharks, getting the two smaller manufacturer's to pay allows Microsoft to say that a precedent has been set and that since the smaller companies have paid to license Microsoft...

Google+ Android app in the Market

Google+ Android app in the Market

Posted on Jun 29, 2011 by MG1

Google has unveiled their new social layer today, and it is called Google+. The trouble is that it is only open to a select few invitees, and those of us who have been invited are not yet allowed to write about the product in detail. That said, if you are a lucky invitee, be sure to grab the new Google+ app from the Android Market.
The app includes the basic features of the service including Circles (how you choose who you share things with), Stream (shared items), Instant Upload and Huddle. Those last two are the really interesting features. Instant Upload does exactly what it says and automatically uploads photos and video from your Android device, so you can easily share them with others...

Orange UK's HTC Desire HD getting Android 2.3 update as we speak

Orange UK's HTC Desire HD getting Android 2.3 update as we speak

Posted on Jun 29, 2011 by MG1

Orange UK and HTC have started rolling out Android 2.3 Gingerbread updates for the Desire HD. If you’re in the “affected” group you can already check to see whether a new update is available. If it isn’t – don’t worry. I’m sure HTC’s servers are dying at the moment as the company tries to push the software to all users.
You probably know what Gingerbread brings, so I won’t repeat it here. Still I’ll mention the improved Copy/Paste which actually makes the functionality usable.
As usual, we remind you it’s good practice to backup all of your PIM data (contacts and calendars) before updating. Your stuff may be in the cloud, but having a local copy is always a plus. When you’re done with that —...

Chrome OS UK launch: everything you need to know

Chrome OS UK launch: everything you need to know

Posted on Jun 29, 2011 by MG1

Samsung’s Chromebook is hitting UK shores this week, but how does it work? What else will be available that uses Chrome? And what about the data?
All is revealed after the break. Don’t buy a Chromebook until you’ve read it!
Chrome is Google’s operating system that’s always online. That’s right, you do everything through the Cloud (hello, Google Docs!), meaning super quick start up times, and no headaches if your laptop crashes, as everything is always backed up. You can also access your documents wherever you are, as long as you can get online, so no need to have that vital USB key with you.

Google now activates 500,000 Android devices per day, on track to hit 1 million per day in October

Posted on Jun 29, 2011 by MG1

On May 10th at the 2011 Google I/O conference, the search engine company announced that they were activating over 400,000 Android devices every single day. Today, via a tweet from Andy Rubin, the father of Android, pictured above wearing glasses, we now know that number is up to 500,000 per day, and more importantly it’s growing at a rate of 4.4% per week. Using some basic maths (500,000 x 1.044 and counting the number of times we hit the equal button on our calculator until it shows a number over 1 million, then adding that number to 26, the current week of the year we’re in) we’ve tabulated that by the end of October the number of Android devices being activated per day should equal just o...

Android 3.1 leaks for Acer Iconia Tab A500

Posted on Jun 28, 2011 by MG1

Acer's Android 3.1 (codenamed Honeycomb) update for its Iconia Tab A500 tablet has leaked out. It first appeared on the Chinese website bbs.gfan.com While this update isn't official in the sense that Acer has not yet released it via its own channels, it is the real deal. The leaked update.zip file supports multiple languages and including Google Apps. This means that Android 3.1 ROMS like HoneyVillian and Minimalist 3.1 are no longer required for Iconia Tab A500 owners.
The update brings resizable home screen widgets, support for a variety of new input sources and motion events, the Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP) API for audio, and other improvements that Motorola Xoom and Asus Eee Pad T...

CyanogenMod 7.1 RC1 Android ROM debuts with new features and more

Posted on Jun 28, 2011 by MG1

The most popular custom Android ROM has just received an update, bringing CyanogenMod to version 7.1. It’s been a while since we’ve seen the ROM get an update, and this time around you’ll find support for more devices, bug fixes, and new features on the table.
Users who download and install the CyanogenMod Nightly builds may be familiar with just about everything you’ll find in the latest build of the ROM but it’s still nice to see the changes become official. CyanogenMod 7.1 is now officially running Android 2.3.4, which will bring users to the latest version of the OS and allow for video chat through the Google Talk application. Microsoft inks patent deal with small Android manufacturer

Microsoft inks patent deal with small Android manufacturer

Posted on Jun 28, 2011 by MG1

Microsoft has secured another avenue of income from its smartphone patents, as it has signed a deal with General Dynamics Itronix, a relatively unknown rugged device manufacturer. Microsoft inked a deal with HTC last year that allows HTC to use Microsoft's patents in its Android smartphones.
The terms of the Itronix deal have not been disclosed, but it is evident from the statements that the company is paying Microsoft for the privilege of using its patents. The companies' statement on the agreement says "Although the contents of the agreement have not been disclosed, the parties indicate that Microsoft will receive royalties from General Dynamics Itronix under the agreement."

Google and Taiwan duke it out over Android Market refund period

Google and Taiwan duke it out over Android Market refund period

Posted on Jun 28, 2011 by MG1

Google has found a new enemy, and this time it is the Taiwanese government. The government of Taiwan is in a disagreement with Google over the 15 minute return policy that is present in the Android Market. As a result, Google has made paid apps inaccessible in the Taiwanese Android Market.
The conflict occurs because of a Taiwanese law that states that all items purchased over the internet require a 7 day return policy, since the buyer cannot physically touch the item before shelling out money for it. App stores were not covered by this law until a recent amendment that was enacted once they became so popular. Google's Android Market has a famously short 15 minute return period for all regio...

Leak reveals Samsung's first Android slider for Verizon

Leak reveals Samsung's first Android slider for Verizon

Posted on Jun 28, 2011 by MG1

PocketNow obtained a couple of leaked photographs of a Samsung device that is apparently the SCH-i405. For the Korean based manufacturer, it will be its first Android flavored device with a side-sliding QWERTY keyboard for Verizon, and has a resemblance to the Samsung Epic 4G that currently resides at Sprint.
The SCH-i405 model number puts the handset right after the Samsung Continuum which means that the specs, when released, probably won't blow your mind. The phone did receive Bluetooth and Wi-Fi certification but has yet to meet the august members of the FCC. That gives us about 6-8 weeks before a possible launch on Verizon. Of course, most of the carrier's customers have their heart and ...

OnLive Viewer for Android ripped and available

OnLive Viewer for Android ripped and available

Posted on Jun 28, 2011 by MG1

In case you don't know, OnLive is an interesting service that has been building in popularity since its release about a year ago in the US. The idea is essentially cloud gaming, where the full power needed to run a game is being done by servers in the cloud, then the video, audio and controls are synced to your OnLive device. So, assuming you have a fast enough Internet connection, you could play anything from F3ar, to Batman: Arkham Asylum streaming either to your computer or OnLive box hooked to your computer. You can even watch others play against each other in games like NBA 2K11 or Homefront.
OnLive wants to bring their service to all platforms including game consoles, and mobile device...

Nokia's Android flirtations revealed

Nokia's Android flirtations revealed

Posted on Jun 27, 2011 by MG1

We don't know if this device is "super confidential" or not, but we've just come across yet another Nokia N9 lookalike with a non-MeeGo operating system on board. Well, it looks that way, anyhow. There's no way to verify that the Android homescreen we see above is a legitimate Gingerbread installation and not a mere screenshot (the resolution looks all wrong, for one thing), but the source of this image is the same Chinese fellow that posted a picture of Nokia's Windows Phone prototype, the Sea Ray, way back in May, so we're inclined to believe he's got an inside line on these things. Additionally, the undersized Android UI elements on the screen actually encourage us to believe that this is...
