New AVG Premium Security Guards Your Good Name
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksDesktop Computers
Security vendor AVG Technologies today announced a new top-tier antivirus suite, AVG Premium Security. The new suite includes everything you'll find in AVG's Internet Security package plus aggressive identity protection. According to AVG, it's the only Internet security solution around that actively surveys the Web for incidents of stolen identity, rather than taking a passive approach to protecting your name.
AVG's Identity Alert module combs through known criminal webpages, chat rooms, and bulletin boards to find out if a customer's personal information is changing hands someplace it isn't supposed to. It monitors a user's email address and debit and credit card numbers, which AVG claims a...

New iPad 3 contract goes to Pegatron, not Foxconn
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksAppleiPad 3
Pegatron has been awarded a new contract to build Apple’s next-generation iPad tablets, Taiwan Economic News reports. According to the report, Pegatron underbid Hon Hai for a new contract to manufacture the iPad 3, which will become available some time near the Thanksgiving holiday according to an earlier report. Hon Hai, owner of infamous Apple manufacturing partner Foxconn, manufactures Apple’s current-generation iPad 2 tablet along with a number of other Apple products. Pegatron is seemingly working hard to increase its production share of Apple devices, however; the Taiwan-based manufacturer reportedly also won an order from Apple to manufacture a total of 15 million iPhone 5 handsets. Mass production of Intel ultrabooks slated for September
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksIntel
Acer, ASUS, Dell, Lenovo and HP will begin to mass produce Intel-powered ultrabooks in September, on schedule for a second-half launch, DigiTimes reported on Tuesday. ASUS’ UX21 ultrabook will be the first such device to market, despite reports to the contrary that HP would release its device before ASUS. Instead, HP’s ultrabook may not launch until the fourth quarter or early next year, a far cry from the original rumored August launch date. Models from Acer and Dell could be late to the market, too, due to slower than expected panel production. Intel introduced its ultrabook roadmap in May and hopes the devices, which will be powered by the company’s latest Core processors and 22nm Ivy Bri...

Security hack can 'kill' MacBook battery firmware

Accuvant security researcher Charlie Miller on Friday revealed plans to demonstrate an exploit that would compromise the batteries, not the computers, on MacBooks. Apple's batteries reportedly use default passwords on their firmware and can have their controllers compromised by those who know the passwords and can get access to the low level hardware. The hole shown to Forbes could lead to something as simple as rendering the battery inoperable to auto-installing malware and even forced overheating.
Miller has so far wrecked seven batteries with the hack, though none to the point where they suffer physical damage. Batteries have a fuse that will automatically cut if they overheat in normal c...

Retina Display coming to Apple's next iPad according to LG Display CEO
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksLGAppleiPad 3
Apple’s next-generation iPad will employ the company’s famous Retina Display according to LG Display CEO Young Soo Kwon. The Korea Times reported on Friday that Kwon let slip the news while speaking with reporters following LG Display’s second-quarter earnings report, which saw the manufacturer’s profit tumble 96%. “[Kwon] said more smartphone manufacturers will release new models employing LG’s “Retina Display’’ that has been used in iPhones and iPads,” The Korea Times’ report states. LG Display manufactures the current Retina Display found on Apple’s iPhone 4 handset. Earlier reports suggest Apple is preparing to launch an updated iPad in September alongside the iPhone 5. The new Retina Di...

ARM to Challenge Intel's Dominance in Notebooks
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksCPU
By 2015, ARM will have captured a notebook share of 23%, IHS predicts.
“Starting in 1981, when IBM first created its original PC based on Intel’s 8088 microprocessor, the X86 architecture has dominated the PC market,” said Matthew Wilkins, principal analyst of compute platforms for IHS. “Over the next generation, billions of PCs were shipped based on X86 microprocessors supplied by Intel and assorted rivals - mainly AMD. However, the days of X86’s unchallenged domination are coming to an end as Windows 8 opens the door for the use of the ARM processor, which already has achieved enormous popularity in the mobile phone and tablet worlds.”
By 2015, ARM notebook shipments will hit 74 million un...

Intel gives discounts to get sped-up, Core-based Chromebooks
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksOperating SystemsIntelGoogleChromium OS
Google Chromebooks will soon get a big speed upgrade in return for a slight discount, insiders claimed Wednesday. The Chrome OS hardware will reportedly go to Core i3 and beyond processors and, to make the price balance work, will get a 10 to 20 percent discount from Intel on the chips. Existing partners Acer and Samsung were reported by Digitimes as onboard and might be joined by ASUS and others as soon as early 2012.
The upgrade would come as a tacit admission that Chromebooks weren't necessarily working in their current price field. Although they cost $50 to $100 more than a netbook, they don't really have better performance, insiders said. The two systems out so far also supposedly have ...

OS X Lion is here and I am already typing this story on the new OS X update. It was not enough for Apple to just release the new OS X 10.7 though. Apple also released the highly anticipated new 2011 MacBook Air. The MacBook Air is twice as fast and features the Thunderbolt port. Mac mini fans also get treated to a new 2011 Mac mini with double the performance and Thunderbolt port.
Apple also released the world's first Thunderbolt Display. With the release of the new MacBook Air line Apple has killed the white MacBook. Apple apparently decided to not update the MacBook and have the basic MacBook Air priced at $999 take its place.

Chromium OS running on a MacBook Air: somewhere, a mad scientist cackles in the night

Does it hurt your brain to look at the picture above? That'd be Chromium OS -- running on a MacBook Air! Pretty much the definition of "worlds colliding," this feat is brought to you by Hexxeh, whose most recent mind-warping project put Chrome on an iPad. The platform-mixing maestro says in this case everything works except Bluetooth, owing to a lack of support. But hearty souls who seek to follow in his footsteps, take heed: there's no dual-boot option, and you will lose OS X -- so perhaps this is a job for your now outdated model. Click the source link for 14 easy steps to turning your svelte laptop into Frankenstein's monster, but sadly, there's no mention of where to buy that hopelessly ...

Apple reportedly testing high-res screens for iPad 3
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksAppleiPad 3
Well, here we go again. Another report out of the Korean Times suggests that Apple is currently testing a high-resolution 9.7-inch display that will bring a Retina Display of sorts to the next iPad.
The report said:
“Apple’s upcoming iPad 3 will feature an improved display to support quad extended graphics (QXGA), a display resolution of 2048×1536 pixels with a 4:3 aspect ratio to provide full high definition (HD) viewing experience,” said a source close to the talks.
I think it’s pretty clear that the next iPad will have a higher-resolution display but the real question is when can we expect the next iPad to hit. If we go by Apple’s patterns over the last few years, the next-generation tabl...

Apple to ditch Samsung for iPad 3 chip?
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksSamsungAppleiPad 3
With all the legal wrangles going on between Apple and Samsung (you show me yours and I'll show you mine) it's easy to forget that the two tech giants are BFFs when it comes to chip production - Samsung manufactured the A4 chip that sits in your iPhone 4 and the A5 that's housed in your iPad 2.
Or at least they were - a report by Reuters suggests that Apple may be looking elsewhere when it comes to the production of its next-gen SoC, the A6.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world's largest dedicated independent semiconductor foundry, is said to be in the middle of a trial to see if it has the minerals for large scale A6 production - a task that will kick off before the ...
