Today's Apple Product Releases

Today's Apple Product Releases

Posted on Jul 21, 2011 by MG1

OS X Lion is here and I am already typing this story on the new OS X update. It was not enough for Apple to just release the new OS X 10.7 though. Apple also released the highly anticipated new 2011 MacBook Air. The MacBook Air is twice as fast and features the Thunderbolt port. Mac mini fans also get treated to a new 2011 Mac mini with double the performance and Thunderbolt port.
Apple also released the world's first Thunderbolt Display. With the release of the new MacBook Air line Apple has killed the white MacBook. Apple apparently decided to not update the MacBook and have the basic MacBook Air priced at $999 take its place.

Chromium OS running on a MacBook Air: somewhere, a mad scientist cackles in the night

Chromium OS running on a MacBook Air: somewhere, a mad scientist cackles in the night

Posted on Jul 21, 2011 by MG1

Does it hurt your brain to look at the picture above? That'd be Chromium OS -- running on a MacBook Air! Pretty much the definition of "worlds colliding," this feat is brought to you by Hexxeh, whose most recent mind-warping project put Chrome on an iPad. The platform-mixing maestro says in this case everything works except Bluetooth, owing to a lack of support. But hearty souls who seek to follow in his footsteps, take heed: there's no dual-boot option, and you will lose OS X -- so perhaps this is a job for your now outdated model. Click the source link for 14 easy steps to turning your svelte laptop into Frankenstein's monster, but sadly, there's no mention of where to buy that hopelessly ...

Apple reportedly testing high-res screens for iPad 3

Apple reportedly testing high-res screens for iPad 3

Posted on Jul 19, 2011 by MG1

Well, here we go again. Another report out of the Korean Times suggests that Apple is currently testing a high-resolution 9.7-inch display that will bring a Retina Display of sorts to the next iPad.
The report said:
“Apple’s upcoming iPad 3 will feature an improved display to support quad extended graphics (QXGA), a display resolution of 2048×1536 pixels with a 4:3 aspect ratio to provide full high definition (HD) viewing experience,” said a source close to the talks.
I think it’s pretty clear that the next iPad will have a higher-resolution display but the real question is when can we expect the next iPad to hit. If we go by Apple’s patterns over the last few years, the next-generation tabl...

Apple to ditch Samsung for iPad 3 chip?

Apple to ditch Samsung for iPad 3 chip?

Posted on Jul 18, 2011 by MG1

With all the legal wrangles going on between Apple and Samsung (you show me yours and I'll show you mine) it's easy to forget that the two tech giants are BFFs when it comes to chip production - Samsung manufactured the A4 chip that sits in your iPhone 4 and the A5 that's housed in your iPad 2.
Or at least they were - a report by Reuters suggests that Apple may be looking elsewhere when it comes to the production of its next-gen SoC, the A6.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world's largest dedicated independent semiconductor foundry, is said to be in the middle of a trial to see if it has the minerals for large scale A6 production - a task that will kick off before the ...

MacBook Air refresh to bring keyboard backlighting back?

Posted on Jul 14, 2011 by MG1

Apple's next generation of MacBook Airs could be bringing the backlighting back, if a new report is to be believed.
The first generation of Airs rocked a backlit keyboard, but the handy typing-in-the-dark feature was done away with in the most recent iterations.
As well as keyboard back-lighting, Apple Insider's sources posit that the new 11.6- and 13.3-inch MacBook Airs are rumoured to come with Thunderbolt ports for high-speed file transfer, and possibly high speed 400MBps flash memory.
The Mac that roared
The new line is set to debut during the week commencing 21 July, according to the same sources, and are set to ship with the final build of Mac OS X Lion, which was unveiled at WWDC in ....

Jailbreakme registers over 2 million jailbreak attempts in mere four days after launch

Jailbreakme registers over 2 million jailbreak attempts in mere four days after launch

Posted on Jul 12, 2011 by MG1

It was just a couple of days ago when Jailbreakme released its latest 3.0 version supporting iOS devices like the iPad 2 and others running 4.3.x, but it's already got significant traction having registered over 2 million taps on the jailbreak button, according to a tweet by one of the main contributors to the service, Grant Paul. That translates into the impressive more than 500,000 a day.
Jailbreakme's popularity stems from the fact that the tool is the first to support untethered jailbreak for the iPad 2, but it's also easiest and probably the most secure one out there. It uses a yet unpatched hole in Mobile Safari, so the user can load Cydia and set their device free, but Apple engineer...

iPad 2 Shipping Times Drop To 3-5 Days

iPad 2 Shipping Times Drop To 3-5 Days

Posted on Jul 11, 2011 by MG1

When Apple’s iPad 2 first came out back in March, there were massive supply shortages. The bottleneck was rumored to be light leakage issues with the LG supplied display panels, but whatever the problem was, it looks to be fixed. Apple plans to boost shipment numbers for Q3 and has just shortened iPad 2 shipping times to 3-5 days.
During the first month of the iPad 2 launch, shipping times were set to 4-5 weeks out. The iPad 2 continued to sell out in other countries with a worldwide shortage that resulted in disappointing shipment numbers for Apple during its Q1 earnings report. That was soon improved by April and has since remained at 1-2 weeks out. Today, the online Apple Store started sh...

Second hacker indicted in AT&T iPad hacking

Second hacker indicted in AT&T iPad hacking

Posted on Jul 07, 2011 by MG1

The second of two hackers arrested over stealing iPad data this year has been formally charged in a Newark court. Andrew Auernheimer was accused of identity theft and conspiracy to get unauthorized access to a computer. Along with Daniel Spitler, who recently pleaded guilty, Auenhimer is alleged to have obtained the personal e-mail addresses and other info for about 120,000 iPad 3G users on AT&T in June of last year.
The indictment for Auernheimer has e-mail evidence of himself and Spitler aiming to get shock value out of the attack, which the two launched under the group name Goatse Security. Spitler told Auernheimer that he hoped to get at least one reporter's e-mail address to guarantee m...

Apple iPad 2 Plus coming this Fall with Retina Display?

Apple iPad 2 Plus coming this Fall with Retina Display?

Posted on Jul 07, 2011 by MG1

The rumors of the iPad 3 coming out this Fall have been bouncing around for a while now but an analyst is lending a bit more credence to the fact that we may see a followup to the Apple tablet soon and it may have a boosted screen.
“We hear Apple could migrate the iPad’s display resolution from a current pixel density of 132 (pixels per inch) to 250-300 ppi for the ‘iPad 2 Plus’ (note that the iPhone 4‘s screen is 326 ppi),” analyst Craig Berger wrote, according to AppleInsider.
According to this analyst, the iPad 2 Plus would have the major screen improvement, may include a storage bump but will have similar innards to the existing iPad 2. This way, Apple could bill this as an expansion of ...

JailbreakMe 3.0 now live, setting your iPad 2 free

JailbreakMe 3.0 now live, setting your iPad 2 free

Posted on Jul 06, 2011 by MG1

iPad 2 owners can now enjoy the freedom of the easiest way to jailbreak their tablet, JailbreakMe 3.0. The tool, developed by @comex, works without the need to connect your iDevice to a computer – you just navigate to www.jailbreakme.com and install everything from there.
This way of jailbreaking differs from others like redsn0w and Pwnage Tool as it doesn't use the limera1n exploit, but rather works with a userland epxloit. It's also nearly completely safe – you can however mess up your device after you get root access. Jailbreakme is easily reversible by means of an iTunes restore and if you ever wondered whether it's legal stateside, you can rest assured that it is as the Library of Cong...

Apple may be shipping 5 million iPad 2s in July alone

Apple may be shipping 5 million iPad 2s in July alone

Posted on Jul 06, 2011 by MG1

Some leaked information from part suppliers for the Apple iPad 2 suggest that 5 million touch panels have been ordered by Apple in an effort to ramp up production and strengthen their grip on the still young tablet market.
There are multiple companies that are responsible for supplying these touch panels. Wintek and TPK handle the heaviest load and it is believed they shipped between 1.4 and 1.6 million panels just last month. To meet the demands of Apple they will need to step their game up as well as the smaller suppliers such as the company Cando, amongst others.
It is also possible these touch panels could be designated for the rumored LTE-capable iPad that many believe we will see at ...

Apple manufacturing partners may build 5 million iPad 2 units in July

Posted on Jul 06, 2011 by MG1

Apple’s manufacturing partners are slated to build 5 million iPad 2 units in July alone, DigiTimes reports. The new claim follows an earlier report stating Apple will ship between 12 million and 14 million iPad 2 tablets in the third quarter of 2011, doubling the Cupertino-based technology giant’s second-quarter shipment volume. DigiTimes claims Cando, Sintek Photronic, Chimei Innolux, TPK Holding and Wintek will combine to supply 5 million touch sensors this month, matching the volume they reportedly filled in June. Apple’s iPad 2 remins one of the best-selling consumer electronics devices on the market, and Apple may launch an updated version of the tablet later this year according to rumo...

Upcoming MacBook Airs to use 400Mbps flash storage?

Upcoming MacBook Airs to use 400Mbps flash storage?

Posted on Jul 05, 2011 by MG1

Japanese blog Macotakara.jp is reporting from parts makers in Asia that Apple’s upcoming MacBook Air refresh, expected in the next two weeks, will use super-speedy 400Mbps NAND flash storage chips. In addition to being incredibly fast — even faster that the current MacBook Air solution, which uses an mSATA connector to connect the SSD to the motherboard — these new NAND flash storage chips would be soldered directly to the motherboard, bypassing any connector. If true, this new change would result in 100-times performance increase over the current solution, and coupled with a rumored bump to i5 / i7 processors, the new MacBook Airs should absolutely fly.

Parts suppliers detail timing for iPhone 5, iPad 3

Posted on Jul 04, 2011 by MG1

Taiwan-based companies that are part of the supply chain for the Apple iPhone 5 and the Apple iPad 3 have begun to prepare materials for the production of the two devices. Apple plans to launch just one new iPhone model this time. Meanwhile, the iPad 3 has just recently been added to the production schedule. Both will be produced in small volumes in August, with units ramping up in September and October, according to industry sources cited by DigiTimes.
Most market watchers have estimated that Apple's iPhone supply volume will only reach 20 million units in the third quarter and iPad's supply volume will only be at around 11 million to 12 million units due to the slower-than-expected progres...
