Mac Trojan Impersonates a Flash Player Installer

Posted on Sep 29, 2011 by MG15

We've always known that Macs are susceptible to malware, but without a significant portion of market share, why should anyone bother? Now that numbers are up, Mac users are finding out that their platform of choice is also vulnerable, and it's not just Windows users who have to be on the lookout. The latest threat eating away at Apple PCs is a trojan horse that tries to dupe users into thinking it's a harmless Flash Player installer.

Apple may surprise with MacBook Pro refresh later this month

Apple may surprise with MacBook Pro refresh later this month

Posted on Sep 15, 2011 by MG1

Apple is planning to sneak in a modest refresh of its high-end MacBook Pro line later this month according to a new rumor. AppleInsider cites multiple anonymous sources in claiming that Apple’s MacBook Pro line will receive a light bump in late September that delivers marginal speed improvements to the laptops’ Intel Core i-series processors and little else. Intel’s just-announced 2.4GHz, 2.5GHz and 2.7GHz quad-core Core i7 processors are expected to replace the current 2.0GHz, 2.2GHz and 2.3GHz chipsets found in Apple’s current 15 and 17-inch MacBook Pro models, the report says. Apple may also update the current 2.7GHz CPU in the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Intel’s new dual-core 2.8GHz Core i7...

Apple's A6 chip to boost speed, battery life in next iPad

Apple's A6 chip to boost speed, battery life in next iPad

Posted on Aug 23, 2011 by MG15

Apple's next iPad will be faster and more power-efficient thanks to its new, quad-core A6 processor, but the new tablet may not be ready to ship until next June, an industry analyst said Monday.

The A6 will succeed the dual-core A5 processor used in Apple's iPad 2, said Linley Gwennap, founder and principal analyst at the Linley Group. The A6 will likely be made by chip foundry company TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.), Gwennap said, citing multiple sources. The A5 is manufactured by Samsung, and Apple is embroiled in a legal dispute with that company. [Although many industry analysts have proclaimed knowledge of Apple's plans that seem suspect, Gwennap is an old hand in the sem...

More evidence Apple is testing 4G LTE iPhone and iPad emerges

More evidence Apple is testing 4G LTE iPhone and iPad emerges

Posted on Aug 22, 2011 by MG15

New evidence has emerged that further confirms Apple’s ongoing tests of an LTE-enabled iPhone and iPad. BGR exclusively reported last week that multiple Apple carrier partners are currently testing iPhone models equipped with LTE radios. Our source also supplied a PLIST file containing evidence of the LTE-enabled iPhone. Now, MacRumors has discovered this LTE.plist file in iOS 5 developer builds for both the GSM iPhone 4 and the CDMA iPad 2. While the discovery of these files does not necessarily indicate that Apple plans to release 4G LTE-compatible devices in the near future, it does reaffirm that ongoing tests are being conducted with the new high-speed wireless technology.

Extra sources back iPad 3 with 2048x1536 display in 2012

Posted on Aug 19, 2011 by MG3

Sources on Friday supported beliefs that the iPad 3 would carry a 2048x1536 display. Apple was now due to start test productions with the more advanced screen in October with expectations of an early 2012 release. Tips to the WSJ had Apple contractors already building 1.5 million iPad 3s in the fall, in part to see if it can improve yields ahead of full production runs.

Apple Patents Design of the MacBook Air

Apple Patents Design of the MacBook Air

Posted on Aug 18, 2011 by MG3

Apple just patented the design of the MacBook Air, which is really the image we imagine when we talk about an Ultrabook.
Patent infringements on ornamental designs are not pursued as often as technology patents, and it is unlikely that Apple would go after Intel as long as the chipmaker is delivering the hardware for its computers, but this patent surely is interesting in the light of Intel's $300 million fund to support the launch of its Ultrabook idea. Could go Apple go after Acer, Asus and Samsung, once those firms are releasing Ultrabooks? Possibly.

Rumor: iPad with "retina display" no longer coming out this fall

Rumor: iPad with "retina display" no longer coming out this fall

Posted on Aug 17, 2011 by MG3

According to Taiwanese rumor site DigiTimes, who has a track record that’s square in the middle of the “it could be bullshit, it could be true” barometer of believability, Apple had hopes of launching a third generation iPad this fall, and shipping between 6.5 million and 8 million units by the end of this calendar year, but they had to scrap said plans because they’re finding it difficult to secure availability of LCD panels. Right now, the only manufacturer who can reliably make the 9.7 inch 2,048 x 1,536 pixel “retina display” that many are assuming will be the highlight feature of the iPad 3, is Sharp. Both Samsung and LG have yet to reach a satisfactory level of yields on such advanced ...

Trouble with high-resolution display yields might have pushed the next iPad for 2012

Posted on Aug 17, 2011 by MG3

The version of the iPad 2 with a high-res display, which was supposed to come by year-end, is now reportedly been delayed due to screen production issues.
Apple's next tablet is known as the iPad 2 Plus, iPad HD, or simply iPad 3, and some iOS 5 coding revealed that it should sport a screen with double the current resolution, or 2048x1536 pixels. The high-res slate is supposedly aimed at professional graphic designers, film editors and the like, and rumored to come with dedicated versions of Apple's image and video editing software.

iPhone 5 on Sept 12 tips carrier insider, but iPad 3 2011 plans scrapped

More behind the scenes Apple shuffling today, with good news and bad about two of the most anticipated iOS devices on the horizon. The iPhone 5 could well be on track for a September 12 launch, Engadget‘s tipster informs them, after word that carrier Telefonica will begin scaling back its current iPhone stock in time for that date so as to “prepare us for the launch of a new smart phone.” However, Apple’s supposed plans for an iPad 3 release in the second half of 2011 have reportedly been axed over high-res screen shortages.

A still-ongoing eBay auction has validated suspicions that Apple has been testing 3G-capable Macs for years. The 2007-era MacBook Pro prototype, originally bought off of Craigslist for parts, has a built-in Dynastream ANT2USB modem modified to fit in the aluminum chassis. It includes not just the necessary SIM card slot for the HSPA 3G access but a retractable antenna that would sit flush with one corner of the display.

Apple is once again proving just how powerfully influential it is in IT. By effectively cornering the market on CNC (computer numerical control) lathes, the company is forcing its already reeling competitors to move from metal to fiberglass chassis on their Intel UltraBooks.

Acer Notebook Aspires for MacBook Air-like Proportions

Thin and light notebooks inevitably draw comparisons to Apple's MacBook Air, and you can probably expect a lot more of that once Ultrabooks emerge, at least at first. Part of the reason probably has to do with there not being a ton of pancaked proportioned notebooks. Intel aims to change the mobile landscape with its Ultrabook concept, and it looks as though Acer is itching to get started.

New iPad 3 contract goes to Pegatron, not Foxconn

Posted on Jul 29, 2011 by MG1

Pegatron has been awarded a new contract to build Apple’s next-generation iPad tablets, Taiwan Economic News reports. According to the report, Pegatron underbid Hon Hai for a new contract to manufacture the iPad 3, which will become available some time near the Thanksgiving holiday according to an earlier report. Hon Hai, owner of infamous Apple manufacturing partner Foxconn, manufactures Apple’s current-generation iPad 2 tablet along with a number of other Apple products. Pegatron is seemingly working hard to increase its production share of Apple devices, however; the Taiwan-based manufacturer reportedly also won an order from Apple to manufacture a total of 15 million iPhone 5 handsets. Security hack can 'kill' MacBook battery firmware

Security hack can 'kill' MacBook battery firmware

Posted on Jul 25, 2011 by MG1

Accuvant security researcher Charlie Miller on Friday revealed plans to demonstrate an exploit that would compromise the batteries, not the computers, on MacBooks. Apple's batteries reportedly use default passwords on their firmware and can have their controllers compromised by those who know the passwords and can get access to the low level hardware. The hole shown to Forbes could lead to something as simple as rendering the battery inoperable to auto-installing malware and even forced overheating.
Miller has so far wrecked seven batteries with the hack, though none to the point where they suffer physical damage. Batteries have a fuse that will automatically cut if they overheat in normal c...

Apple’s next-generation iPad will employ the company’s famous Retina Display according to LG Display CEO Young Soo Kwon. The Korea Times reported on Friday that Kwon let slip the news while speaking with reporters following LG Display’s second-quarter earnings report, which saw the manufacturer’s profit tumble 96%. “[Kwon] said more smartphone manufacturers will release new models employing LG’s “Retina Display’’ that has been used in iPhones and iPads,” The Korea Times’ report states. LG Display manufactures the current Retina Display found on Apple’s iPhone 4 handset. Earlier reports suggest Apple is preparing to launch an updated iPad in September alongside the iPhone 5.
