T-Mobile Germany starts prepping for Nokia Windows Phone
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsMicrosoftNOKIAT-MobileWindows Phone 7
Some marketing materials from T-Mobile Germany have given us a few details on what to expect from Nokia’s first Windows Phone. It’ll be running the recently-released Mango update, have a 3.7-inch convex AMOLED touchscreen, and include a navigation app with 3D rendering and voice control. Most of that we’ve already heard in previous Sea Ray leaks, which suggest the device will also have a 5 megapixel camera, and a chassis roughly equivalent to Nokia’s one and only Meego handset, the N9.

Nokia developing 'Meltemi' OS for feature phones?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsNOKIA
Although Nokia still hopes Windows Phone will round out a "three-horse race" with iOS and Android, it's said to be cooking up an entirely new operating system aimed at lower-end handsets. According to the Wall Street Journal, the OS (codenamed "Meltemi") is meant to cement Nokia's top dog status in emerging markets, where feature phones remain king. Makes sense: low-end phones accounted for 47 percent of the company's device-and-services earnings in the second quarter. We're not sure if the adage "when one door closes, another one opens" exactly applies here, but either way, it looks like we've hardly seen the end of software updates out of Suomi.

Nokia Sabre joins Sea Ray in Windows Phone line up?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIASabre
The Nokia Sabre looks set to join the Nokia Sea Ray in the company's Windows Phone launch line up, after Microsoft accidentally included the product name in a competition's terms and conditions.
Naturally, the text has since been changed to remove the product names which, in its removal, kind of makes the Nokia Sabre seem all the more likely.
However, the Sea Ray is just a product codename, so there's no guarantee that the Nokia Sabre will hit the shelves with that moniker.

Nokia to turn mobile landscape on its head with 'Meltemi' smartphone OS
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIA
Nokia is again developing a proprietary smartphone operating system after announcing this past February that it would abandon both Symbian and MeeGo in favor of Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform. Citing multiple anonymous sources, The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday reported that Nokia’s executive vice president of mobile phones, Mary McDowell, is heading up the project. Code-named “Meltemi,” the new mobile platform is reportedly Linux-based and it is intended for use on low-end smartphones. BGR has independently confirmed the report, and we have learned additional details that paint an exciting new picture of the mobile industry should Nokia’s new OS realize its potential.

Nokia slashes 3,500 more jobs, shutters factory
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIA
Nokia has announced it is slashing its workforce by 3,500, shutting its Romanian production facility by the end of the year while also shuttering the Location & Commerce sites in Bonn, Germany and Malvern, US. The reductions – which are expected to be completed by the end of 2012 – are described by Nokia CEO Stephen Elop as “painful, yet necessary, steps to align our workforce and operations with our path forward,” and come before the company has even officially unveiled its first Windows Phone handset. The company suggests that the Romanian manufacturing plant was unable to keep up with the high-volume production from its Asian plants, hence the marching orders for the staff there. Meanwhil...

Nokia N9 begins shipping at not inexpensive prices
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIAN9
After months of rumors and pre-orders, the Nokia N9 has finally begun shipping. Today, the Finnish manufacturer announced that its Meego-drenched handsets are now available for consumption, in both 16GB and 64GB variants. Of course, those of us in the US are out of luck, as are those in Germany and the UK (barring any back-door wizardry), but everyone else can grab a 16GB model for the not-so-small price of €480 (about $650), or the 64GB version for the similarly steep price of €560 (roughly $757). Pricing and availability, of course, will vary by region, but you can find more details in the full press release after the break, or at the source link, below.

Microsoft boots Windows Phone manager following mini-review of Nokia's Mango handset
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsMicrosoftNOKIAWindows Phone 7.5
The man who previously led the development of IE Mobile for Windows Phone is no longer with Microsoft, whose termination followed a series of tweets regarding one of Nokia's unreleased Mango handsets. A representative of Ballmer & Co. has confirmed to us "that Joe Marini no longer works at Microsoft," and while the company refuses to discuss the details of his termination, you be the judge. In his first tweet, Mr. Marini expressed glowing enthusiasm for the device, having called it one of Nokia's slickest ever.

Nokia CEO says Google Motorola deal creates uncertainty for Android ecosystem
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIAMotorolaGoogle
Nokia CEO Stephen Elop has come out all guns blazing in defence of Nokia's decision to jump aboard the good ship Windows Phone 7, rather than taking the Android path.
Speaking in China, Elop said that the Google / Motorola deal has caused some big waves in the Andoid arena, saying that "it's only with time that we'll fully understand" the deal.
He said that for other manufacturers such as HTC and Samsung, there will no be concerns as to how the deal will affect their Android allegiances.

Nokia 801 (or N8-01) makes its first cameo appearance, comes with an edge-to-edge screen
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIA801
The Nokia 801 seems to be the latest leak in Nokia's pipeline. The device could have been called the Nokia N8-01 in Nokia’s previous naming routine, making it the successor to the company’s current flagship, the Nokia N8. And it’s got the stylish looks to prove it with a different form factor focused around an edge-to-edge qHD screen, if we are to link this model with the rumored about N8-01. How did we find out about it? The Nokia 801 video teaser was in the list of promo videos on a Nokia 700 device left over at a booth at IFA. We wouldn't completely rule out the possibility of this being just a concept, possibly to demo NFC, which somehow made it to the Nokia 700, but there are plenty of ...

Nokia N9 coming to Australia in October on three carriers
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIAN9
The Nokia N9 will be considered a rarity in the US, UK and Germany when it's released, but at least fans Down Under won't have to look very far to get their hands on one. Espoo's officially announced its intention of selling the MeeGo device on Telstra, Optus and Vodafone, in addition to distributing it through several major retailers. Look for the one-of-a-kind handset to make its way to Australia in October for roughly $850; those who opt for the 16GB model will be able to choose from black, blue and pink, whereas the 64GB version will only be made available in black. Full presser can be found below.

Nokia taking submissions for the name of their US Windows Phone range
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIA
Nokia’s Head of Developer Marketing – North America, has posted a poll asking for suggestions on the name of their US range of Windows Phone 7 handsets.
The names offered seems to suggest a rather tentative challenge at the US market, but they are also taking alternate suggestions. I would personally go with something like Thor, indicating power while still having Northern European roots.
What do your readers think? Vote in the poll at Polldaddy here.

Nokia's Ovi Store now allows pushing wirelessly content to your phone
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIA
Nokia’s Ovi Store for Symbian apps is now powered by Nokia Drop, allowing you to wirelessly push apps, themes, ringtones and wallpapers to your handset. This basically brings a quick and easy way to install content on your device as you don’t have to deal with SMS confirmations or use any external plug-ins.
Turning auto installation of apps means that you won’t even need to confirm that you want to install new software on your phone. To benefit from it, you need to use Internet Explorer, Firefox or Chrome (sorry, Mac users, no Safari support). Nokia Drop is compatible with S60 5th Edition and Symbian^3 devices.
