Some iPhone 4S owners reporting screen quality issues

Some iPhone 4S owners reporting screen quality issues

Posted on Oct 18, 2011 by MG1

Some iPhone 4S buyers are reporting problems with subpar screens, Apple's support forums indicate. When issues are present, the overriding complaint is of a yellow tint, especially notable when a 4 and 4S are compared side-by-side. People are also upset, however, at problems with poor contrast and/or washed-out colors.
The issue may mark the return of a problem that affected the iPhone 4 early into its lifecycle. At the time devices were being shipped so quickly after assembly that screens continued to show signs of a yellow adhesive. The residue would eventually disappear though, leaving behind normal phones.

iPhone 4S sales restricted to reservations only

Posted on Oct 18, 2011 by MG1

Apple’s iPhone 4S sold more than 4 million units over the past weekend and due to the immense demand, the device is now available in stores by reservation only. This bit was revealed by Apple’s “How To Buy” web page for the iPhone 4S, where the in-store on-the-spot purchase option has been completely replaced by a reservation requirement that must be made after 9:00pm for pickup the next day.

iPhone 4S hits four million in sales after first weekend

iPhone 4S hits four million in sales after first weekend

Posted on Oct 18, 2011 by MG1

How did you spend your weekend? If you're Apple, the answer is simple, really: selling a whole lot of iPhones. Cupertino this morning announced that iPhone 4S sales have reached four million -- quite an impressive number compared to what its predecessor was capable of, a fact no doubt helped by the addition of some carriers, like Verizon and Sprint here in the States. The handset is currently available in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and the UK, with plenty more countries coming by the end of the year. Press info can be found after the jump.

Why the iPhone 4S Only Has 512MB of RAM

Why the iPhone 4S Only Has 512MB of RAM

Posted on Oct 17, 2011 by MG1

We'll probably never hear an official justification for why Apple only put 512MB of RAM in the iPhone 4S. But you know what? They don't need one. Because you'll hardly be able to tell. Here's why.
Live Long and Prosper
The more RAM you pack in a device, the more power it uses (at least until the next generation of RAM comes along, then it resets and starts all over again). For decades, power consumption was a secondary concern for gadget hardware and software engineers. They had an unlimited supply of energy piped through a cord. But now that battery-powered devices have become our most vital trinkets, how long that device can live without a recharge doesn't just affect performance—in a lot ...

Some Retailers Say iPhone 4 Cases Will Fit The 4S, Others Don’t

Some Retailers Say iPhone 4 Cases Will Fit The 4S, Others Don’t

Posted on Oct 17, 2011 by MG1

We’re all well aware that a phone such as the iPhone 4S requires a case. It’s just too damn precious and costs way too much to go unprotected, but the best cases are often expensive. That said, I’m sure many iPhone 4 owners were hoping to keep their old case when upgrading to the iPhone 4S, but if OtterBox is your go-to case brand, think again.
OtterBox iPhone 4 cases won’t protect the iPhone 4S, with the exception of the Reflex Series. But the iPhone 4S cases from OtterBox will protect the iPhone 4.
According to Brighthand, there are tiny differences in the design of the 4 and 4S, including a slightly different placement of the volume buttons. Apparently OtterBox’s tight-fitting cases won’t...

Samsung now wants to ban iPhone 4S sales in Australia and Japan

Samsung now wants to ban iPhone 4S sales in Australia and Japan

Posted on Oct 17, 2011 by MG1

The ongoing legal battle between Apple and Samsung gets another turn as Samsung now has filed motion for an injunction on Apple iPhone 4S sales in Japan and Australia. Earlier, the Korean company said that it will try to ban sales of the iPhone 4S in France and Italy just a day after its launch as the handset allegedly infringes on its patents.
"In light of these violations, Samsung believes the sale of such Apple devices should be banned," Samsung said in a statement.
At the same time, Apple on its part says it owns a “thicket of patents,” but would only agree licensing “lower level patents.” This basically means that Apple is not there for the money like Microsoft which has reportedly sign...

iPhone 4S lacks

iPhone 4S lacks "Enable 3G" switch

Posted on Oct 17, 2011 by MG1

If you're among the teeming masses holding a brand new iPhone 4S in your hands, you may be surprised (as we were) to find there's something conspicuously absent from the Network Settings menu on your new device: specifically the ability to manually shut off 3G data. After receiving word, and a screenshot, from a helpful tipster, rocking a 4S on Vodafone's network, we found the same option missing from our own AT&T iteration. Of course this isn't the sort of thing that's likely to have an impact on most users, but if you're the type that likes to squeeze every last bit of juice out of that Apple, the omission could cause some frustration. We gave Apple support a call to see what they had to s...

Keystone ECO Slider turns the iPhone 4/4S into a side-sliding device with QWERTY keyboard

Keystone ECO Slider turns the iPhone 4/4S into a side-sliding device with QWERTY keyboard

Posted on Oct 17, 2011 by MG1

I’m sure there are some iPhone users out there who really miss a physical keyboard. Sure Apple’s predictive text input is cool, but sometimes you just want an extra screen estate which is used by the on-screen keyboard. For those times you would appreciate if there were a side-sliding keyboard available for the iPhone… And… now it is!
It’s called Keystone ECO Slider and it’s a work of the company called Concord Keystone. The ever-useful accessory connects to the iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S via Bluetooth, and also works like a case, protecting your beloved smartphone while providing you with the extra capability. Of course, even when used, you will still be able to access to all ports and use your ...

Sprint explains iPhone 4S unlocking policy: phones will be unlocked, then locked, then unlocked again

Sprint explains iPhone 4S unlocking policy: phones will be unlocked, then locked, then unlocked again

Posted on Oct 14, 2011 by MG15

Yeah, that makes just as much sense to us as it does to you. Following yesterday's PR debacle, the final word from Sprint appears to be as follows:
"Sprint's policy is to have the iPhone 4S SIM locked to our network domestically and internationally. At launch, the International SIM will be unlocked. We do expect a SIM lock to be pushed to the devices shortly after launch. We will then allow existing customers in good standing to unlock the SIM for international use if needed in the future."

So, if we're reading that correctly, the iPhone you purchase and activate will be unlocked. Then, a SIM lock will be "pushed" to your device. But, if you've been a good, policy-abiding customer, your iPh...

Sprint to offer three levels of iPhone service, 'yellow' AppleCare+ repairs will cost $49

Sprint to offer three levels of iPhone service, 'yellow' AppleCare+ repairs will cost $49

Posted on Oct 14, 2011 by MG15

Thinking about buying an iPhone 4S from Sprint? Depending on how clumsy you tend to be with mobile devices, you might want to consider adding the $99 AppleCare+ option at purchase, since those Total Equipment Protection plans are definitely out. A Sprint employee wrote in to detail us on upcoming service procedures, which include grouping a damaged device within three categories -- green, yellow and red -- after diagnosis. As you might imagine, green repairs are the easiest to deal with, and include 'minor damage' (i.e. cracked screens are out). These repairs will be handled for free within the first year for all customers, and within two years for those who purchased AppleCare+. Next up, th...

Siri features lacking for UK users: Disappointment due tomorrow

Siri features lacking for UK users: Disappointment due tomorrow

Posted on Oct 14, 2011 by MG15

Picking up your iPhone 4S tomorrow? We’ve got some Siri related sorrow to go with the mirth from earlier: we’ve learned that not only are navigation look-ups US-only, but local directory searches won’t work in the UK either.

One of the much-hyped features of the Siri voice assistant for iPhone 4S has been its ability to look up stuff around you. As iOS boss Scott Forstall demoed at Apple’s press conference earlier this month, you can ask it to find nearby restaurants, or even show you the way home.

That’s great, except new owners of the iPhone 4S are in for a shock. They will find that they can’t. As Stephen Fry touched on in his review for the Guardian, maps and direction Siri requests ar...

Grand Theft Auto III headed to iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and Android

Grand Theft Auto III headed to iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and Android

Posted on Oct 14, 2011 by MG15

Grand Theft Auto III is a game us Pocket-linters remember with great affection. We have so many fantastic memories of tearing through one of the first ever truly open world games, wrecking every car in our path and generally smashing people to pieces.

Since then, the GTA series has continued to innovate. Chinatown Wars is one of the best gaming apps currently available on iOS, its top down open world adventuring being quite unlike anything else on smartphones or tablets. It never, however, quite achieved the levels of greatness that were possible in GTA III, leaving our iPhones and iPads free from the joys of decimating liberty city.

iPhone 4S already sold out at AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint

iPhone 4S already sold out at AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint

Posted on Oct 14, 2011 by MG1

If you weren’t among the million to sign up for an iPhone 4S on preorder day, odds are you’ll have to wait for more stock to come in. All three major U.S. service providers selling Apple’s latest handset are indicating that they’re out of stock. AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon will be dishing out devices to those that have reordered starting tomorrow, and if you haven’t ordered one, wait times may be upwards of four weeks. Pricing across all three carriers on a two-year contract is $199 for the 16 GB model, $299 for the 32 GB version, and $399 for 64 GB.
The iPhone 4S has the same 3.5-inch 960 x 640 touchscreen as the iPhone 4, but it bumps up the processor to a dual-core processor clocked at 800...

Apple iPhone 4S gets the teardown treatment

Apple iPhone 4S gets the teardown treatment

Posted on Oct 14, 2011 by MG1

It was only a matter of time until the guys over at iFixit got their hands on an Apple iPhone 4S to complete a teardown and some of their findings are what we expected while others may be disappointing.
The Apple iPhone 4S does indeed have the dual-core A5 processor that was first used in the iPad 2. They have the processor speed listed at 1GHz while prior reports said the processor was clocked at only 800MHz. When that word broke it was a little disappointing for some despite early tests showing that the iPhone 4S does indeed stack up with the competition in terms of speed.
Another rumor that many dreaded is in fact true as the iPhone 4S only has 512MB of RAM in a time when anything less ...
