MSI Unveils GTX 680 Twin Frozr III OC

MSI Unveils GTX 680 Twin Frozr III OC

Posted on Apr 17, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Graphic CardsMSI

It's a fact of life: all of the manufacturer graphics cards are built using the same core GPUs from Nvidia and AMD, so for a card to stand out, it needs to bring a little something special to the table. Some manufacturers go for sky-high overclocks; others go for unique cooling systems. MSI offers both with the newly announced GTX 680 Twin Frozr III OC.
As you might have guessed from the name, the big draw of the GTX 680 Twin Frozr III OC is MSI's third generation Twin Frozr custom cooling system, which rocks a pair of 80mm fans with grooved propeller blades along with several nickel-plated copper heatpipes. MSI claims that the Twin Frozr tech keeps the card 22 degrees (Celsius) cooler and 1...

Court Rules Downloading Source Code is Not the Same as Stealing Physical Property

Court Rules Downloading Source Code is Not the Same as Stealing Physical Property

Posted on Apr 17, 2012 by MG1

Former Goldman Sachs programmer Sergey Aleynikov is a free man after the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in New York deemed that stealing source code isn't the same as stealing physical property, and therefore Aleynikov was wrongly charged under the National Stolen Property Act (NSPA). If Aleynikov is to be punished, it will have to be based on copyright law and other intellectual property (IP) legislation, the judge said. Let's retrace Aleynikov's steps.
Aleynikov found himself in hot water after downloading proprietary source code from Goldman Sachs' high-frequency trading (HFT) computers and then uploading the code to servers in Germany before hightailing it out of Wall Stree...

HTC One V launch date confirmed

Posted on Apr 17, 2012 by MG1

If the HTC One X and One S are just a little bit out of your price range, then HTC has you covered with the One V. It’s not packing a lot of power in terms of specs, but the hardware and software experience aren’t too far removed from what you would get with the more expensive phones. Carphone Warehouse has just announced pricing and availability information for the One V in the UK.
You’ll be able to pre-order the HTC One V starting from today, with the handset being free on £20.50 a month tariffs. Carphone Warehouse will be offering the phone on O2, Orange, and Vodafone contracts, with tariffs naturally becoming more expensive if you want more minutes or data.

Seagate CEO talks Thailand recovery, why flash won't supplant magnetic hard drives

Seagate CEO talks Thailand recovery, why flash won't supplant magnetic hard drives

Posted on Apr 17, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Seagate

We like to dream about the day when solid state storage will completely replace the comparatively sluggish magnetic hard drives we've been using for years, but according to Seagate CEO Steve Luczo, that idea isn't grounded in reality. Forbes sat down with the Seagate executive this week for a lengthy chat about the state of the magnetic hard drive industry, and while he admits that hard drives suffered a setback due to the Thailand floods, the sheer rate at which demand for storage is growing — over 40 percent a year — means that even magnetic media is going to have a hard time catching up even after it reaches pre-flood production levels this fall. Even with advances like Seagate's heat-ass...

Microsoft job ads hint at a browser-based version of Skype based on HTML5

Microsoft job ads hint at a browser-based version of Skype based on HTML5

Posted on Apr 17, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Microsoft

There's something thrilling about using job postings to parse a company's strategy, especially when the advert is so gosh darn low on secrecy. Take Microsoft, for instance, which posted four openings for developers to work on its Skype for Browsers project. If that weren't self-explanatory enough, the various ads each explain that Microsoft is looking for code monkeys to help "bring [the] Skype experience on to the Web," a position that calls for HTML5 know-how, along with proficiency in C#, Java or C++. That's as official a heads up as any, though if you've been paying attention you know Skype already powers Facebook's web-based video chat service. So it shouldn't exactly be surprising, the...

Xbox 720 to be a 16-core powerhouse?

Xbox 720 to be a 16-core powerhouse?

Posted on Apr 17, 2012 by MG1

In what could well be the 720th rumour about the Xbox 720, it is thought the upcoming next-gen games console is set to utilise a 16-core CPU.
This is according to Xbox World, which has it on good authority that the Durango dev kits sent out last month – Durango being the Xbox 720's potential codename – are nowhere near as powerful as the finished product.
The final console is said to contain a 16-core IBM Power PC CPU with a graphics processor on par with AMD's Radeon HD 7000-series graphics cards.
It has been previously reported that AMD's kit will be inside both the Xbox 720 and the PS4.

Netflix to release source code for its army of diagnostic monkeys

Netflix to release source code for its army of diagnostic monkeys

Posted on Apr 17, 2012 by MG1

Wired reports that Netflix is poised to release the source code for its suite of cloud monkeys, programs that keep its systems running smoothly, over the next few months. The streaming media company detailed its "simian army" last year, which began with Chaos Monkey — a tool that randomly disables live servers to test if the system can withstand common types of failure. Netflix then added a number of other monkeys, like Latency Monkey, Conformity Monkey, Doctor Monkey, and Janitor Monkey, that run other diagnostics and simulations on Netflix's service. Adrian Cockroft, director of cloud architecture at Netflix, tells Wired that "we will be doing bits and pieces of it throughout the summer an...
