ST-Ericsson to fire 1,700 employees

ST-Ericsson to fire 1,700 employees

ST-Ericsson, as the name implies, is a joint venture that was setup between STMicroelectronics and Ericsson back in February 2009. You’ve probably never heard of them, and for good reason too. There’s no nice way of saying, so here it goes: They move at a snail’s in an industry that demands them to run like a cheetah. ST-Ericsson may have been the first company to ship an HSPA+ smartphone modem that could do 42 Mbps down, but then Qualcomm added that to their chips, along with 4G LTE. ST-Ericsson was also one of the first companies to talk about using ARM’s Cortex A15 processor, but Texas Instruments will beat them to market with the OMAP5. Let’s also not forget about the NovaThor L8540, whi...

HTC predicts 55 percent revenue jump, could hint at strong One sales

HTC predicts 55 percent revenue jump, could hint at strong One sales

Posted on Apr 24, 2012 by MG3

HTC's results for Q1 2012 were a long way short of spectacular, but they came too early to see any impact from sales of its latest wares -- particularly the flagship One X and the ambitious mid-range One S. According to Reuters, the Taiwanese manufacturer now predicts that its revenue will leap by 55 percent in Q2, compared to that bad last quarter. That kind of growth equates to around $3.56 billion, which isn't so impressive when you compare it to the same quarter last year, when turnover broke records and was around 20 percent higher, but it's still an encouraging sign that this company could reap what it sowed at MWC.

Posted on Apr 24, 2012 by MG3

The HTC DROID Incredible 4G LTE has been outed on Verizon’s “Droid Does” website. The new Incredible is equipped with a 4-inch qHD Super LCD display, a dual-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, a microSD slot and an 8-megapixel rear camera — possibly the same one found on HTC’s One-series smartphones. The handset also runs HTC’s latest Sense 4.0 skin atop Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. In line with Verizon’s other 4G LTE smartphones, the latest Incredible will seemingly be offered for $299.99 alongside a new two-year agreement. The DROID Incredible 4G LTE has since been removed from Verizon’s site and there is no word from Verizon regarding a release date.

T-Mobile G2X finally gets the bug-squashing update it needed a year ago

Posted on Apr 24, 2012 by MG3

Once upon a time, the T-Mobile G2X had promise that no other Android phone had. The US variant of the world’s first dual-core phone was met with a lot of praise, which turned into a mess. The stupid powerful handset suffered from handfuls of bugs, which resulted in it being pulled from shelves, only to return with minimal improvements. Well, it looks like the handset may finally be receiving the update it needed out of the gate – literally over a year since its release.

Lumia 900 data connectivity fix finally available to Rogers customers

Lumia 900 data connectivity fix finally available to Rogers customers

Posted on Apr 24, 2012 by MG3

When the Lumia 900 data connectivity fix was released to AT&T customers a full 3 days early, it was presumed that Rogers customers would have access to the fix at the same time. Unfortunately, they were informed that they would have to wait until “around April 20th” to get the update.
It looks like that update is finally available to our friends to the north, albeit a little late. Rogers customers can download and install the update through the Zune software on Windows or the Windows Phone 7 Connector app on OS X.

HTC One V coming to Canada on Bell, will reunite with One S

Posted on Apr 24, 2012 by MG3

Canadians looking to hunt down the smallest addition to HTC's One series are in luck. According to a MobileSyrup tipster, it'll arrive on Bell next week, in all its aluminum unibody glory. While the One X looks to be confined to Rogers in the Land of the Maple Leaf, both the One S and One V are going to be offered by Bell Mobility. The mole also hinted at pricing below CND $300, matching those entry-level credentials we've explored just recently. Not a fan of Bell? Don't get disheartened -- the Android 4.0 minnow will also make an appearance on Telus, so 'chin' up.

Rumor: LG's next flagship, the D1L, to come with wireless charging

LG announced “the world’s first quad core smartphone” at Mobile World Congress in February of this year. Dubbed the Optimus 4X HD, it still hasn’t hit the market, meanwhile the HTC One X has, and it has the same quad core NVIDIA Tegra 3 inside. Anyway, just like the HTC One X has a dual core variant that relies on Qualcomm’s S4 Snapdragon, LG is said to have an Optimus 4X variant called the D1L that also uses the S4 Snapdragon. We don’t know when this mythical handset will hit the market, but according to the South Korean website DDaily, we know that it’s going to have at least one feature that makes it unique: wireless charging. Assuming the D1L can be recharged without having to fiddle wit...

Asus Introduces Factory Overclocked GeForce GTX 680 DirectCU II TOP

Asus Introduces Factory Overclocked GeForce GTX 680 DirectCU II TOP

Posted on Apr 23, 2012 by MG3

It's still a challenge finding one of Nvidia's Kepler infused GeForce GTX 680 graphics cards in stock and ready to ship, but one thing the new GPU series doesn't lack is third-party variation. Nvidia's GPU partners are putting their own stamp on the GTX 680 with custom coolers and, in some cases like the new DirectCU II TOP edition from Asus, custom designed PCBs as well.
Asus went above and beyond the reference blueprint with the GeForce GTX DirectCU II TOP, adding 10-phase DIGI+ VRM digitally regulated power delivery with 30 percent noise reduction. The card also features 'Super Alloy Power' components that Asus claims will last 2.5 times longer than reference parts.

Last month, the first details of a new Verizon family data plan were leaked.

That's a high price for the data, but it is certainly more affordable than the standard roaming data price.

TapLogger Android app can read your password based on motion sensor data

TapLogger Android app can read your password based on motion sensor data

Posted on Apr 23, 2012 by MG3

Mobile phones present a number of potential security risks, and researchers at the University of Pennsylvania may have just discovered a new one — information retrieved from your phone's motion sensors. The team created an experimental app called TapLogger, which is based on the premise that when you tap on your touch screen, you're not just interacting with the screen, but moving the entire device. So if you hit a button in the upper right corner, your phone will actually move in that direction slightly, and that subtle movement is then read by the accelerometer and other sensors built-in to your device.
