NVIDIA: there's nothing 'Ultra' about Ivy Bridge Ultrabooks unless you add Kepler
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksIntelnVIDIA
This is a vaguely awkward message for NVIDIA to be putting out. On one hand, the company is best buddies with Intel and is hoping to see its next-gen GPUs bundled with a large portion of the Ivy Bridge notebooks that will ship this year. But to reach that target, it must risk irking Chipzilla by emphasizing the limitations of Ivy Bridge's integrated graphics. That's exactly what happened at a recent presentation, when NVIDIA told us there'll be "nothing Ultra" about the performance of a regular Ivy Bridge Ultrabook because the integrated HD 4000 graphics will only handle around 43 percent of current games.

Dell ships new Precision towers with Xeon E5-2600
Like UnlikeFiled in: Desktop ComputersCPUDell
Dell has just announced four newly updated Precision tower workstations for business professionals with Intel's 32nm, eight-core Xeon E5-2600 processors. Other than the new chip, the towers get an externally-removable power supply that doesn't require any tools. It is lockable and has a built-in handle that lights up green when it's functioning properly.
The hard drives are also accessible from the front of the tower of the Precision T7600. It allows storing the drives in secure locations at the end of the day when needed. The tower has room for up to four 3.5-inch drives or eight 2.5-inch hard drives. The T7600 can also convert to a rack mount. It can be had with two of the Xeon E5-2687 pro...

Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesApple
Apple is working on a low-cost iPhone model for release later this year, according to supply chain sources in touch with the China Times. The new hardware may allegedly ship around the same time as a sixth-generation high-end iPhone. The main incentive is said to be getting a better foothold in the low-end smartphone market, since even the iPhone 3GS is $375 unlocked, making it far more expensive than competing Android devices.

Google Rolls Out AdWords for Video on YouTube
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
When it comes to consumer technology, the only thing hotter than mobile apps is Internet video, an area that has seen explosive growth in the last few years. Now YouTube has introduced a familiar framework designed to allow advertisers to capitalize on this video boom, dubbed Google AdWords for Video.
The program was soft launched last September for a select group, but now Google AdWords for Video is available to all and it essentially follows the same logic as Google's text-based AdWords. What that means is that keywords will allow a company's video ad to appear during relevant video searches, companies only pay for the targeted video ads that people actually view, and they have access to d...

Sony VAIO E Series 14P gets Ivy Bridge processor nudge, improved display
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksSony
While they may not be the Sony ultrabooks we're still all itching to see, the company's E Series 14P laptops have reappeared with some Ivy Bridge bones. According to Sony Australia, the previously Intel Core i3 processor has been bulked up to a third-generation 2.1GHz Core i7-3612QM, capable of 3.1GHz with Turbo Boost. That's not the only difference, with the 14-inch display boosted to 1600 x 900 and a new choice between AMD'S Radeon HD 7670M or Intel's HD Graphics 4000 to provide the graphical horse power in the updated hardware. The aluminum-splashed laptops, priced at $1,500 AUD (around $1,608 USD), will still house Sony's Gesture Control functions. This should allow you to navigate aroun...

Samsung on Monday started showing a teaser video (embedded below) for its upcoming next-generation Galaxy S. Following a countdown that started Sunday, the clip is short on details but talks about having a galaxy that "fits perfectly into your hand." In a probable dig at Apple, it also claims that the new phone will help avoid users become "sheep," an ironic statement for a company hoping to outsell Apple in smartphones.

Microsoft Xbox 360 found to infringe Motorola patents in preliminary ITC ruling
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesMicrosoftMotorolaXBOX 360Xbox 360 EliteXbox 360 S
A judge at the US International Trade Commission has just ruled that Microsoft's Xbox 360 infringes four of Motorola's patents. The ruling isn't unexpected, since many of the patent cover H.264 video encoding, which is a standard — the ITC wasn't persuaded by Microsoft's argument that Motorola will "kill video on the web" by failing its obligation to license the patents under fair and reasonable terms. In a statement, Microsoft said it "remains confident the Commission will ultimately rule in Microsoft's favor in this case and that Motorola will be held to its promise to make its standard essential patents available on fair and reasonable terms."

Netflix earnings fall though streaming grows
Like UnlikeThere’s an odd set of numbers being posted today by Netflix as they report their earnings for the first quarter of 2012, including losses in DVD, gains in streaming, and a global revenue drop from this past quarter. There’s always two (or more) ways to look at an earnings call, and this is certainly one for the books: $826 million in total domestic revenue for domestic sales only, this down from $847 million the quarter before and up from $706 million last year this same quarter. All that with significant gains in both domestic and international streaming subscribers – a surprising number, actually.

Verizon’s 700MHz sale trashed by T-Mobile
Like UnlikeFiled in: Verizon WirelessSprint
T-Mobile is committed to blocking Verizon’s proposed purchase of AWS spectrum from various cable companies. Verizon recently offered to sell all of its block A and B 700MHz spectrum in exchange for FCC approval of its AWS deal. However, T-Mobile USA CEO Philip Humm personally met with senior FCC officials last week to insist that the sale would not be enough to mitigate any negative effects that the AWS deal would create.
