Facebook Organ Donation Tool Greatly Increases Donor Registration

Facebook Organ Donation Tool Greatly Increases Donor Registration

Posted on May 03, 2012 by MG1

Yesterday Facebook rolled out a new tool for members to use that allows them to know if they are organ donors. This tool was being teased with the exclusive from ABC News. People on organ donor lists around the country often die before receiving life-saving organs because people either don't register to be donors or family members aren't aware that loved ones want to be donors.
The Facebook tool also allows people that want to be donors to register directly with their states donor agencies. Apparently, the tool has worked out pretty well with some state registries reporting as much is a 700% increase in donor registrations compared to the norm.

HTC touts the One X battery life

HTC touts the One X battery life

Posted on May 03, 2012 by MG1

HTC outed a blog post in which it detailed the thousand of man hours that went into the battery life performance of its flagship HTC One X handset, partly to alleviate the concerns about it having a non-removable battery, we'd wager to guess.
They compared with last year's flagship HTC Sensation and the results are pretty astounding - 147% longer talk time, 103% more music playback, 39% more video playback, and 23% more web browsing time, all from a phone with a beautiful 4.7" HD screen.
Not bad, but HTC also has some independent reviewers' charts to back its claims up, like those from the Anandtech review below.

It’ll take place in San Francisco, and seeing as how no agenda was provided, we have absolutely no clue what will be talked about. They’ll be developer oriented workshops, that’s a given, but will we be heaing about Windows Phone 8? Codenamed Apollo, the next version of Windows Phone is expected to take things to the next level. Rumor has it that it’s built on the same kernel that Windows 8 uses, so develop...

Blocking Pirate Bay obviously working as traffic shoots up

Posted on May 03, 2012 by MG1

A Pirate Bay spokesperson has said that the site has seen over 12 million more visitors than ever before after the High Court ruled that UK ISPs must block it.
Virgin Media was quick to bring the block in, but the national news coverage has funnelled millions more people than usual to the site.
"Thanks to the High Court and the fact that the news was on the BBC, we had 12 million more visitors yesterday than we had ever had before.
"We should write a thank you note to the BPI [British Phonographic Industry]," a spokesperson told TorrentFreak.

Nokia Lumia 710 coming to WIND Mobile tomorrow, priced to sell

Posted on May 03, 2012 by MG1

The long wait is coming to an end soon, with Canada’s WIND Mobile unleashing the Nokia Lumia 710 tomorrow, offering the handset for free on 3 year WINDtab with WIND40 monthly plan (surely still a bad deal) or $99 on the WINDtab with the WIND25 monthly plan or finally $259 outright, which seems a low price to pay for freedom from being locked in for an eternity.

Apple wants to prevent Steve Jobs testimony from being made public

Apple wants to prevent Steve Jobs testimony from being made public

Posted on May 03, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Apple

It turns out that smartphone manufacturers aren’t the only companies that sue one another. We know, that’s shocking, isn’t it? As Apple has learned over the years, music companies also sue people, including Apple. Apple is embroiled in one such case right now, where companies that own, among other things, the rights to Eminem’s music albums, are asserting that Apple still owes them a lot of money.
We have no idea who is in a better position there, but of possible interest to our readers is the fact that Apple is moving to block the release of video testimony of Steve Jobs (and some other senior executives) to the public. The testimony apparently contains many of the details of Apple’s negoti...

Android being translated to C#

Android being translated to C#

Posted on May 03, 2012 by MG1

If you follow the news even a little bit, you'll know that Google has been having a bit of trouble with Oracle over the use of certain Java code in Android. So, a group of developers came up with a pretty simple solution: what if Android weren't based in Java? What if, instead, Android could be translated into C#? Turns out, that might not be such a terrible idea. At the very least, it could make Android even faster than it is now.
The team at Xamarin knows quite a bit about C# and .NET, which it has used to help create a development platform called Mono, which allows for the creation of iOS or Android apps written in C# rather than Objective C for iOS or Java for Android. The apps created ...

Gingerbread adoption still growing despite age

The bulk of Android devices continue to run the year-and-a-half old Gingerbread operating system (64.4%), followed by the two-year old Froyo OS (20.9%). The adoption rate of Android 2.3 is still growing, however devices running Froyo decreased by almost 3%. As more and more manufacturers update their mobile portfolios and as the HTC One X, t...

Acer's B243PWL is a 24-inch IPS Display for Commercial Customers

Posted on May 02, 2012 by MG1

Typically when a company advertises a product for enterprise or commercial customers, what they're really saying is, 'Hey, we jacked up the price, thanks for your business.' That doesn't appear to be the case with Acer's new B243PWL monitor, a 24-inch "commercial display." It's a $329 (MSRP) monitor, but it boasts an IPS panel with a Full HD (1920x1200) 16:10 screen resolution and a 100,000,000:1 contrast ratio (dynamic).

UK ISPs Ordered to Block the Pirate Bay

Posted on May 02, 2012 by MG1

British courts have ruled that internet service providers in the United Kingdom must block file-sharing site The Pirate Bay. Back in February, a British High Court ruling found that TPB and users of the service breach copyright on a major scale. Justice Arnold of the British High Court ruled that TPB went "far beyond merely enabling or assisting" copyright infringement. Now it seems access to The Pirate Bay will soon be blocked by ISPs across the country.

Minor Firmware Update for Nokia Lumia 800 not yet rolled out to end users; repairs audio volume bug

Posted on May 02, 2012 by MG1

Nokia has created a minor firmware update for the Nokia Lumia 800. The only problem is that the update, 12072, has not yet been rolled out globally by the Finnish based manufacturer. The update repairs an audio volume bug that came about after the previous update, 12070, fixed a Power Management Issue. Software version 12072 also includes a new camera app with updated camera settings. The audio volume bug is said to make playing video games difficult while at the same time it messes up the ringtone on your Nokia Lumia 800. The bug makes your phone ring super loud, even from the first second that a call hits your device.
