Mac mini goes on backorder with Amazon UK, Best Buy

Mac mini goes on backorder with Amazon UK, Best Buy

Posted on Jun 30, 2011 by MG1

The Mac mini is once again in short supply, observers point out. At the Best Buy US website the device is now listed as backordered, with a shipping time of one to two weeks, although pick-up should be possible at some stores. Amazon UK is also listing the computer as backordered, though with a specific resupply date of July 5th.
The shortages support the notion that updated Mac minis may be imminent. As new hardware approaches, Apple tends to slow and then cease production of the previous generation. The widespread expectation for the Mini, however, is a late July or early August launch date.
Apple could be holding off on a refresh in order to preload systems with Mac OS X Lion. In any case...

AntiSec Slams Arizona Cops (Again) with Super Personal Data Spill

Looks like last week's "Chinga La Migra" strike against the Arizona Border Police was only part one—the sequel's landed today, and this time it's personal. Like, really personal: Anonymous is claiming social security numbers, girlfriend pics, and more.
The dumps contents—if they're authentic—will be a massive slap not only to the integrity of Arizona's state security, but the lives of its police force. Sayeth Anonymous, in "Chinga La Migra Communique Dos":

US House of Representatives allows Members of Congress to use Skype

Posted on Jun 30, 2011 by MG1

Skype was one of the early VoIP services and remains one of the more popular ways for people to stay connected and see the people they are talking to if video calls are used rather than just hearing the person. Skype is easy to access for just about anyone with a web connection and a computer, smartphone, or tablet today. The US House of Representatives has announced that the Committee on Administration has revealed that Congressional leaders can now use Skype for communications.
They won’t be holding virtual meetings on important Washington concerns using Skype though. The approval is designed to allow the Members of Congress to talk to constituents when they are in Washington or the consti...

Nokia: there's still hope for MeeGo yet

Nokia: there's still hope for MeeGo yet

Posted on Jun 30, 2011 by MG1

Nokia CEO Stephen Elop's comments about the Nokia N9 being the last MeeGo phone may have been misinterpreted, according to a statement sent to TechRadar.
The Nokia N9 was recently announced with mostly positive first impressions, but according to Finnish site MTV3, Elop 'confirmed' that it would be the last MeeGo phone as the company looks to a new Windows Phone/Symbian era - although he was never directly quoted by the site.
Game over, or game on?
We spoke to Nokia to clarify the situation, and received the following response:
"Our primary smartphone platform will be Windows Phone – we have been very clear on this point – this is where we will be focusing our energies and resources as we go...

MySpace to be sold for just pound 18 million?

MySpace to be sold for just pound 18 million?

Posted on Jun 30, 2011 by MG1

MySpace looks set to be sold this week, with the social networking site to be bought for a fraction of the $580 million News Corp paid for it back in 2005.
News Corp had been hoping to get around $100 million for the site, but All Things Digital is reporting that this is way off the number that is likely to be agreed, which will be between $20 to $30 million (£12 to £18 million).
There are two companies vying for MySpace. Specific Media and Golden Gate Capital – the former being an advertising network and the latter a private equity firm.
Deal soon
News Corp is hoping that the sale will be completed by Thursday and it is thought that MySpace Music will be what the eventual buyers will focus ...

NC State discovery finds optimal connections 10,000 times more quickly, ResNet admins do a double take
By Darren Murph posted Jun 29th 2011 8:11AM
Ever wondered how just one message in an average Chatroulette session finds its way to whatever destination fate may deem suitable? Sure you have. As it stands, every single pulse from your Ethernet socket starts its initial journey by hunting for an optimal connection path; in some cases, that involves routing through massive ring networks crossing over untold miles of fiber optic cabling. Using traditional techniques, nailing down an optimal solution for a ring can take eons (or days, whichever you prefer), but there's a new methodology coming o...

Nokia 700 Zeta with Symbian Belle Images Leaked

Nokia 700 Zeta with Symbian Belle Images Leaked

Posted on Jun 30, 2011 by MG1

Most Nokia news these days surrounds its Windows Phone 7 efforts, but the Nokia 700 “Zeta” reminds us that Symbian handsets are still floating in the pipeline. It looks like a nice phone for those who are looking for a simple smartphone without all the bells and whistles of the higher-end Android or Windows Phone devices out there. It is running Symbian Belle, the successor to Anna.
However, it doesn’t look like this will be a bottom-of-the-barrel device. Word is that it is equipped with a 1GHz processor, which is pretty much standard fare these days, 3.2-inch nHD AMOLED display (nHD is what Nokia uses for 640 x 360 resolution screens). The Nokia 700, or Zeta, is pretty lightweight at just 8...

Google launches Swiffy to convert Flash SWF files to HTML5

When iOS was just starting out, many in the industry pointed at the lack of support for Adobe Flash as one of the key pain points that will hinder adoption of Apple’s new mobile operating system. What many failed to realize is that the only devices on the market that could even support Flash were ancient Nokia devices that ran Symbian and Flash Lite, meaning it wasn’t even full blown Flash. Promises were made by Adobe to port the complete Flash stack over to Android and make it perform as fast as it does on your desktop computer, but we’re only just now starting to see Flash becoming useful thanks to extremely powerful dual core processors in superphones and tablets. Most web designers out t...

Nokia issues software updates, new browser, to users of older hardware

If there’s one thing consumers hate more than overpaying for goods and services, it’s buying something that quickly becomes obsolete. These days you need to do a lot of research before signing a 2 year contract and taking home a new smartphone. Is it running the latest version of Android/Symbian, will it get updates, how many apps are available, etc.? Owners of Symbian S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 and Symbian S60 5th Edition (which some people also call Symbian^1) have had their devices for several years now, and while Nokia has issued a few firmware updates to address bugs, they haven’t really added any new features. That’s no longer the case according to a recent post on Nokia Conversati...

TBH app leaks Gingerbread for Droid Charge

TBH app leaks Gingerbread for Droid Charge

Posted on Jun 30, 2011 by MG1

Team Black Hat's got a trick or two up its (we assume) matching black sleeve and it smells like Gingerbread 2.3.3 to us. Released via the hacking outfit's eponymous non-Android market app, this unofficial upgrade ups your Droid Charge's ante -- literally, as the app costs $2.99. Available in both carrier-bloat and non-bloated varieties, custom ROM-flashing addicts can now take this leak for a spin, and always downgrade via P3Droid's handy tweeted directions. Cost-conscious Charge owners shouldn't feel sidelined since the generous blokes behind TBH intend on distributing this gratis... in the next 48 hours. If waiting's not your game and you need this now, be sure to check the source for a bl...

More and more Americans are living without a landline, the FCC says

More and more Americans are living without a landline, the FCC says

Posted on Jun 30, 2011 by MG1

The Federal Communications Commission fifteenth wireless communication report released the other day, is revealing something we thought is true on a much larger scale. 51% of Americans aged 25-29 do not have a landline. Of those 18-24, and 30-34, about 40% lived in households without one. A lot of those 18-24 who have landlines probably live with their parents, we'd add.
This marks the first time when more than a half of the population in any age bracket is living in households without landline phones, and is a huge jump from last year's results. Of course, the good ol' landline doesn't drop calls and rarely experiences intermittent outages, but it seems that the US is moving in the same dir...

Square raises $100 million in funding, but do they deserve it?

Posted on Jun 30, 2011 by MG1

Square, a company that was co-founded by the creator of Twitter, is a service that lets anyone with an iOS or Android powered device accept credit card payments via the use of a relatively low cost accessory that plugs into a headphone jack. It’s received a lot attention by the media, we think it’s mostly due to the fact that the guy who built Twitter is involved, and today the company has just announced that they’ve received $100 million in funding and a $1 billion valuation. Their latest numbers: over 500,000 Square “readers”, the accessory previously mentioned, are in the wild, more than 1 million transactions are being processed per day, and they’re processing more than $3 million per da...

Nokia to Roll Out Update to Symbian 3.2 and 5.0 Phones

Posted on Jun 30, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: NOKIA

Nokia today announced that it plans to offer a system update to some of its legacy devices running Symbian 3.2 and 5.0 (a.k.a, S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2, and S60 5th Edition). The update will include the newest Symbian Anna browser, which adds support for non-ASCII characters, international domains, and will render web sites faster. The update will also refresh Ovi Maps, adding indoor positioning via Wi-Fi and Lonely Planet content for Symbian 3.2 devices, and public transport and check-in support for Symbian 5 devices. Last, all devices will have access to more emoticons. The system update, which starts today for select handsets, will be rolled out over time. The specific phones that w...

Bell slammed with $10 million fine for false advertising

Bell slammed with $10 million fine for false advertising

Posted on Jun 30, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Cell Phones

Bell Mobility had its wrist slapped by the Canadian Competition Bureau a few years ago for claiming to be the most reliable wireless network available, but yesterday they got slammed for something a little more serious. The Bureau has charged Bell for false advertising and fined them the highest penalty they could: $10 million. You might expect some kind of fight or appeal process, but Bell isn’t even disputing the charges, they’re just paying outright and promising to make the changes in their advertising.
So what’s all the fuss about? Bell has been advertising a deal that bundles wireless, broadband home internet, and home TV services for $69.90/month. Once you factor additional fees tucke...

Samsung Galaxy S II 4G is offically coming to Bell; no word yet on pricing or release date

Posted on Jun 30, 2011 by MG1

Recently, we reported that a leaked screenshot indicated that the Samsung Galaxy S II will be making its way to Bell in the north, but now we’re finally getting an official confirmation regarding the matter.
Going by the name of the Samsung Galaxy S II 4G, with its support for theoretical speeds up to 21Mbps, the handset is now being teased on Bell’s web site for all to see. Although we can safely say that the highly awaited handset will indeed be coming to Bell, we’re still left in the dark regarding its pricing and availability. As we’ve reported already, the handset is more than likely gearing up for some kind of mid-July release.
