RIM agrees to consider splitting CEO, Chairman roles
Like UnlikeFiled in: RIM BlackBerry
Research In Motion on Thursday said it would consider splitting its Chief Executive and Chairman roles ahead of its annual shareholder meeting next month. Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis currently each occupy both roles, and the pair have been the targets of much criticism from shareholders, analysts and the media since RIM’s earnings call earlier this month. The company said in a statement that it would assemble a committee of independent directors to study the CEO and board roles, and then make recommendations. The news follows an anonymous plea made by a senior RIM executive that was published exclusively by BGR earlier on Thursday. RIM responded by stating that the company is “in a soli...

Apple, RIM win big as ITC reverses earlier decision in Kodak patent case
Like UnlikeFiled in: AppleKODAKRIM BlackBerry
The International Trade Commission on Thursday reversed an earlier decision in a patent case that could cost camera maker Kodak hundreds of millions of dollars from Apple and RIM. Kodak had filed suit against both firms, claiming that their mobile devices infringed on multiple patents owned by the Rochester, NY-based company. An initial ruling in favor of Kodak was under ITC review, and the commission on Thursday reversed parts of the decision that had previously been ruled in Kodak’s favor. Other parts of the original ruling were sent to be examined by a judge of administrative law, and a final ruling is scheduled to be made on August 30th.

HTC Eternity with Windows Phone Mango leaked
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTCTitan
Images of a new HTC phone that’s currently being dubbed “Eternity” have apparently been leaked online. Reportedly it will land as one of the first Windows Phone Mango devices, which are set to begin launching this fall. Reportedly, the Eternity will be powered by a 1.5GHz Qualcomm processor and will come equipped with a 4.7-inch AMOLED display — a monster of a screen. Rumor has it there’s also an 8-megapixel camera, HDMI-out, 16GB of onboard storage, a 1.3-megapixel camera for video chats, 512MB of RAM, and a 1,650 mAh battery. The form factor reminds us of the HTC EVO 4G, the Inspire 4G, and the HD7, which are starting to feel a bit stale. There’s no word on when the Eternity will make its ...

HP ponders Windows 8 tablets
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftHPWindows 8
On Friday, HP’s brand new webOS-powered TouchPad tablet will make its debut in the United States. Even though HP purchased Palm for $1.2 billion last year so that it could stray away from the Windows-powered tablet market by owning webOS, the company may soon build tablets running Microsoft’s new Windows 8 operating system. In a recent interview with Fast Company, HP’s president and chief technology officer Phil McKinney suggested that Windows 8 tablets could be in the pipeline. “I’m limited to what I can talk about with Windows 8,” McKinney says. “We’re working very closely with [Microsoft], and I’m going to leave it at that or I’m going to start getting myself into trouble.” We could take ...

Olympus unleashes trio of interchangeable lens cameras - PEN E-P3, E-PL3 and E-PM1
Like UnlikeFiled in: CamerasOlympusPEN E-P3PEN E-PL3PEN E-PM1
Olympus has officially announced not one, not two, but three new interchangeable lens cameras; the PEN E-P3, PEN E-PL3 and the PEN E-PM1.
The launch includes a whopper of an update for its cutting edge mirrorless PEN range in the form of the E-P3. This camera boasts a revamped set of specs, particularly in the movie and AF department.
According to Olympus, the E-P3 is the fastest auto focusing interchangeable lens camera currently on the market. This is due to a clever 35 area multiple AF system, which uses image contrast detection to snap the focus as quick as possible.
The 35 focus points also put the camera on a par with some of the more expensive top end DSLR offerings, allowing highly.....

Olympus E-P3 strikes back with ultra-fast AF, touchscreen
Like UnlikeFiled in: CamerasOlympusPEN E-P3
Olympus early Thursday remade its entire PEN camera line and headlined it with the E-P3. The camera uses a genuinely new 12.3-megapixel CMOS sensor and the first dual-core TruePic VI processor to reach much faster autofocus performance than not just other Micro Four Thirds cameras but most interchangeable lens cameras. It can supposedly outperform its higher-end rival, the Panasonic GH2, as well as full-fledged DSLRs like the Nikon D3100 and even the Canon EOS 1D Mark IV.
The updated combination also leads to a much more precise autofocusing system with 35 actual points, 11 of which are selectable, where the E-P2 was limited to 11 real points. Photographers can now use full-time autofocus th...

IBM develops 'instantaneous' memory, 100x faster than flash
Like UnlikeFiled in: IBM
You've got to hand it to IBM's engineers. They drag themselves into work after their company's 100th birthday party, pop a few Alka-Seltzers and then promptly announce yet another seismic invention. This time it's a new kind of phase change memory (PCM) that reads and writes 100 times faster than flash, stays reliable for millions of write-cycles (as opposed to just thousands with flash), and is cheap enough to be used in anything from enterprise-level servers all the way down to mobile phones. PCM is based on a special alloy that can be nudged into different physical states, or phases, by controlled bursts of electricity. In the past, the technology suffered from the tendency of one of the ...

Velocity Micro made to sign Microsoft patent deal on Android
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftGoogleVelocity MicroAndroid
Velocity Micro on Wednesday was the second in as many days to be pushed into signing a patent deal with Microsoft over Android. The deal will see royalties paid on every Cruz tablet sold. Company chief Randy Copeland spun the loss by arguing that it would help lead to "exciting new Cruz tablets" later on.
The deal immediately follows one with General Dynamics and shows Microsoft now turning most of its attention to smaller Android device makers located inside the US. Most of its early focus on royalty collection was on larger phone designers like HTC.
Microsoft believes it owns technology inherent to Android. Most, however, see the company as simply trying to give Android an arbitrary price ...

MSI outs CX480 notebook with 8.5-hour battery, fast boot
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksMSICX480
MSI swung out a relatively unique addition to its CX series notebooks on Wednesday. The 14-inch CX480 has a particularly strong focus on the battery life not often seen in mainstream portables that gives it up to 8.5 hours on a charge. The PC also brings in MSI's in-house fast charging to power up in half as much time and has an Apple-influenced external battery indicator that shows the charge without needing to boot up.
The startup time itself is also distinct and, according to MSI, takes half as long as other notebooks. A new internal design purportedly helps improve heat dissipation by putting all the hot-running components in the upper left, away from the palm rest.
Performance is dictat...
