HTC Desire Android 2.3 update enters testing phase
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsHTCGoogleDesireAndroid 2.3
HTC has announced that its long-awaited Gingerbread update for the HTC Desire has entered internal testing.
The update will provide the HTC Desire with a slightly stripped-down version of the software, with some apps having to be abandoned to free up memory required by the Gingerbread update.
It's been a rollercoaster ride for Desire owners; HTC had originally promised the update, then decided it couldn't deliver it and then changed its mind again a day later, saying that it would be bringing the update out after all.
Gingerbone of contention
The latest update from the company reads: "Hi all - We're excited to share that we are testing our build of Gingerbread for HTC Desire and will start d...

Sony intros G-Series micro HiFi iPhone / iPod systems, blends retro looks with modern features
Like UnlikeFiled in: Mini Sound SystemsSonyCMT-G1BiPCMT-G2NiP
Sony's got a reputation for pumping out forwardly-designed wares, but its new G-Series micro HiFi systems are a blast from the past -- at a glance, anyway. Both rigs are MP3 and iPhone / iPod-compatible via USB and will be available in two different configurations. To start, the CMT-G1BiP / G1iP feature 60 watts of RMS power with DAB packed into the former for those who find only having AM/FM is passé. Next up, the CMT-G2BNiP / G2NiP add WiFi for getting your stream on from the Web or a PC and can be remote-controlled with a free iOS app. The "HiFi" moniker mixed with iPod connectivity might have audiophiles raising a brow to sound quality, but the brushed metal console and its piano-gloss s...

Samsung Conquer 4G redefines the entry level Android smartphone, drops TouchWiz
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungConquer 4G
There’s nothing we love more than a vanilla build of Android, especially when it’s Android Gingerbread. Samsung has quietly announced ‘Conquer 4G’, its new entry level Android smartphone destined for a US release on Sprint’s 4G WiMax network.
When you hear entry level and Android used in the same sentence, the last thing you’d expect to hear is a 1 GHz processor. Surprisingly that’s exactly what’s inside the Conquer 4G, along with a 3.5-inch HVGA resolution touchscreen, 3.2-megapixel camera, 1.3-megapixel front facing camera and Tri-band CDMA support.

Google+ Stumbles Early with Privacy Loophole
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Well, this didn't take long: Google's mayonnaise on toast clone of Facebook is already catching heat for privacy problems. Nothing as egregious as Buzzgate, but Google+ seems to be allowing unfettered sharing of your stuff with anyone. Not good!
Google+ has Circles, a sorta-neat, simplified "Groups" system, wherein you have to explicitly sort your buddies into various social spheres. Then, whatever you share from your account has to be explicitly beamed to one or more of these Circles. So that way, nobody can see your pithy thoughts or photos beyond those you want. Right? Not quite.

Anonymous RIM Employee Condemns Soviet-Era Government Atmosphere and Other Horrors
Like UnlikeFiled in: RIM BlackBerry
BlackBerry may have a nice slice of the market-share pie, and some interesting products—and platforms—on the way, but there are increasing fears over their future. This open letter to RIM, written by a "high-level" employee, says it all.
Told exclusively to BGR, the employee has detailed the problems RIM is facing, and offers up some solutions. Will they listen, though?
Opening the letter by stating s/he has "lost confidence," they detail that "while I hide it at work, my passion has been sapped. I know I am not alone - the sentiment is widespread and it includes people within your own teams," ending the letter by claiming "some of our offices feel like Soviet-era government workplaces."

Samsung wants to ban imports of Apple products to the US
Like UnlikeFiled in: SamsungApple
The legal battle between Apple and Samsung is heating up, and after Apple accused the Koreans of “slavishly” copying iDevices, Samsung has replied vigorously by first asking to see the next-gen iPhone and iPad, while now it's asking the US International Trade Commission to ban imports of Apple-made products into the United States.
The claim is made over patents and extends over iPods, iPhones and iPads, which are only designed in the States, but have to be imported from other countries where they are manufactured. "The complaint requests relief in the form of a permanent exclusion order prohibiting entry to the United States of all Apple products in violation of these patents," Samsung menti...

Nokia's N950 demos MeeGo Harmattan in marathon video
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsNOKIAMeeGoN950
Still obsessing about Nokia's N950 -- you know, the sexy developer-only MeeGo device you can't have? Before you let Elop rain on your parade, indulge yourself with an exhaustive 17 minute video from Thailand, dutifully documenting every nook and cranny of Espoo's ill-fated OS. The long-winded film tours the dialer, browser, and gives a peek at a plethora of camera settings -- like ISO, aspect ratio, and timers -- that we didn't get to see on the N9. Also making an appearance are maps with turn-by-turn navigation, what appears to be a document viewer, and a Facebook app. Go on, have a gander, and dream about a luscious MeeGo future that might have been.

UK: White LG Optimus Black available for pre-order
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesLGOptimus Black
You may be thinking what the point of this article is. Is it about a white or black phone? The answer to that question is… both. The name of the device is LG Optimus Black and it’s available in white. Yep it sounds confusing but that’s the way it is. And to make everything even more confusing, the same device will be available in pink, though we don’t know when.
Anyway, British phone retailers Phones4U is allowing anyone to pre-order the white LG Optimus Black, with the shipping date set at July 15th. Interested users can choose between a number of plans starting at 20 GBP a month from Vodafone, Orange and O2.
Those of you who don’t remember, LG’s baby is one sexy and slim smartphone, rockin...

Amazon tablet to launch in second half, production could be limited by iPad, report claims
Like UnlikeFiled in: Amazon
Amazon will soon place initial component orders for its upcoming tablet, which is slated to launch in the second half of 2011 according to a new report from DigiTimes. Citing anonymous industry sources, the report claims Amazon’s initial order will likely fall in the 1.5 million to 2 million-unit range, and the retail giant is expected to take its first delivery in September. Taiwan-based touchscreen manufacturers Wintek, HannStar Display and J Touch are said to be vying for the contract, though Amazon could face supply issues right out of the gate. DigiTimes says Apple’s iPad tablet is expected to occupy the bulk of tablet production in the second half of the year, and this could make it di...

Windows Phone Facebook app gets push notifications
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows Phone 7
The Windows Phone Facebook app has just received a major update to include push notifications.
The updated Windows Phone Facebook app will now include push notifications for actions like messages, feed comments, photo tags, photo comments, tagged photo comments and more. The major advantage of the push notification is that you don’t have to dive into the app to know when things are going on.
Microsoft’s smartphone platform already had deep integration with this social network, as your Facebook contact info can be pulled in to your contacts lists. I still see the need for a standalone app for the social network though and it’s good to see it continue to receive improvements.

Samsung releases class 10, 32GB microSD cards into the wild
Like UnlikeFiled in: Samsung
Samsung has launched a new high-speed, class 10 certified 32GB microSD card to the market, following Lexar and a number of other manufacturers who have had these cards available for some time.
The new card from Samsung is capable of writing data at 12MB per second, and reading data at twice that pace (24MB per second, for those deficient in math skills). Those speeds are more than double that of the class 4 cards currently on the market. Samsung is aiming the new card at owners of mobile phones that can record HD video and need faster throughput.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab seems like it has been left in the dust by its sexier Android tablet counterparts – the Motorola Xoom and its successor, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and 8.9. The latter tablets are sporting Honeycomb, a version of Android meant for large screens, while the more portable Galaxy Tab with its 7-inch display is still rocking Froyo.

U.S. And U.K. Latest Victims Of Nokia's Online Store Shutdowns
Like UnlikeFiled in: NOKIA
We already know that Nokia has started shutting down some of its online stores, such as those in Spain, France, and Finland, but we didn’t expect to see the U.S. and U.K. web outlets close so soon after.
That’s right folks, Nokia online is gone. Forever. In fact, the only online stores Nokia has left are in China, Portugal and a few South American countries. Luckily for the end user, Nokia phones are still available across a number of different online retailers including Amazon.
Go ahead and regulate your breathing, Nokia fans. Everything’s going to be fine. Well, everything will be fine as long as the Finnish phone giant wasn’t lying when it said these shut downs are about a transition to c...

Facebook CEO says company will launch something awesome next week
Like UnlikeSpeaking to reporters on Thursday, Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that the social network has plans to “launch something awesome” next week. There’s no official word on what will be announced, but we suspect it’s going to be the new iPhone photo-sharing service that we saw just last week. The service — which looked amazing in the leaked screen shots — will likely compete with other applications such as Instagram and Path. Rumor has it that inside Facebook headquarters, the new photo sharing app has been dubbed either “WithPeople,” or “Hovertown.” It’s entirely possible that Zuckerberg will also take the wraps off of his company’s native Facebook iPad app, since it would likely fit well ...
