AMD Expected to Regain Market Share
Like UnlikeFiled in: AMD
IHS iSuppli said that Intel climbed to a processor market share of 82.6% in Q1 (up 2.0 points from Q1 2010), while AMD dropped to 10.1% from 11.8%.
However, Forbes predicts that AMD's notebook processors are good enough to take share from Intel - the publication's forecasts estimates that the uptick could be up to six points in the notebook market and up to eight points in servers. There may also be gains in the desktop market, but since we know that desktop shipments are declining anyway, those share gains may not matter much.
AMD has fueled high expectations among analysts that its new architecture will generate strong processor shipments. There is now clear pressure for AMD to deliver, ev...

Samsung Galaxy Z pics sneak online
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGalaxy R
A new smartphone from Samsung has been announced by Three in Sweden, the Samsung Galaxy Z.
As Samsung hasn't revealed the handset itself we are not sure if this was a slip by Three, with the handset looking like a slightly less powerful variation of the Samsung Galaxy S2.
Specs-wise, the Samsung Galaxy Z is dual-core, packing two 1GHz Cortex-A9 cores, it's powered by Tegra 2 and has a 5MP camera and can shoot 720p video.
Considering the Samsung Galaxy S2 has a dual 1.2GHz processor, it is definitely the more powerful handset but the Galaxy Z is still an impressive piece of kit.
The 4.2-inch display isn't SuperAMOLED but it is SC-LCD with a WXGA resolution. When it comes to memory, there's 8G...

FTC investigating Twitter over excess control of mobile apps
Like UnlikeDevelopers confirmed reports that the FTC was investigating Twitter's policies towards app developers. The exact claims are unknown but are expected by SAI to revolve around its temporarily blocking UberMedia's apps and moves that have prevented rival ad services or have steered users away from visiting third-party hosting sites. Concerns might also exist over Twitter's attempt to discourage the creation of apps that are similar to the official titles and its tendency to buy out competition like Atebits' Tweetie or TweetDeck.
Rumors have swirled that Twitter may have been upset at UberMedia's hints of a rival ad system and possibly a rival microblogging service altogether. The app creator wa...

3G-equipped Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 hits the FCC with bands for AT&T
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksSamsungAT&TGALAXY Tab 8.9
Samsung's mid-sized Galaxy Tab 8.9 has been a bit elusive as of late, but it's now landed in the spot where all devices go to prepare for their big debut: the FCC. What's more, this particular model isn't just WiFi-only like the current Galaxy Tab 10.1 -- it also sports 3G connectivity, and the bands specified in the FCC filing indicate that it's likely headed to AT&T. Interestingly, we've already seen this model number (GT-P7300) pop up at the FCC before, at which point we thought it was the WiFi + 3G version of the Galaxy Tab 10.1. But the more detailed sketch in this latest filing seems to depict a device that's both smaller and ever so slightly tweaked (including a relocated headphone ja...

Apple App Store Hits 100,000 iPad Apps Milestone
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksAppleiPadiPad 2
Apple still dominates the tablet landscape with an ecosystem of apps that has yet to be beat. The App Store has reached a new milestone today, now listing over 100,000 apps designed for the iPad. That’s a huge difference from what competitors, such as Google’s Android tablets, have to offer.
The very first Apple iPad was introduced in April of 2010 with the iPad 2 released in March of this year. Apple did have quite a head start with the first competition-worthy Android tablets having only been released in the beginning of this year, such as the Motorola XOOM. However, the growth is still quite impressive, reaching six figures over the last 16 months in iPad apps alone, not counting iPhone a...

New 7-inch Sharp Galapagos tablet passes through FCC
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksSHARPEB-W51GJ-S
The latest Sharp Galapagos tablet has passed though the FCC certification process. The new 7-inch tablet fits between a 5.5-inch and a 10.8-inch in Sharp’s Android tablet range. The only details to emerge from the FCC testing reveal, unsurprisingly, that it is equipped with an 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi radio.
A visit to the Sharp Japan Galapagos website does not yield any additional details either. The tablet has yet to be released in its home market with only the 10.8- and 5.5-inch tablets currently on sale. Android 2.4 could be a possibility for the device, which is said to be the first version of the Android OS with optimizations for 7-inch tablet devices.

Microsoft scores again with Onkyo Android patent deal
Like UnlikeFiled in: MicrosoftOnkyo
Directly following Android-related patent agreements with General Dynamics Itronix and Velocity Micro this week, Microsoft announced a similar agreement with Onkyo regarding Android tablets. In other Android-related legal news, Oracle announced it is demanding $2.6 billion in payments from Google in its Android patent lawsuit, but the total amount could swell to over $6 billion if Oracle wins triple damages.
Maybe it doesn't matter whether Windows Phone takes off or not -- Microsoft is already making a bundle off of Android. The ultra-litigious software giant has entered into its third legal agreement of the week related to patents it claims aspects of Android infringe.
After corralling Gen....

Edge HD2 Mini PC is an HTPC that hides behind your TV
Like UnlikeFiled in: Desktop ComputersSapphireEDGE HD2
When it comes to home theater PCs, size matters -- and it doesn't get too much smaller than Sapphire's original Edge HD mini PC, pictured above. In fact, Sapphire saw no reason to fiddle with the Edge's diminutive form factor when designing the HD2, and instead poured itself into improving the HTPC's specs. Not only is the updated mini-rig small enough to mount behind your HDTV, but it also packs a 1.8GHz dual-core Intel Atom, 2GB RAM, and a 320GB hard drive. All this (and 1080p VGA / HDMI out, of course) at 30W, "20 times less power than a typical desktop PC," according to Sapphire. No word on price (or pics, for that matter), but feel free to jump past the break for an official press relea...

LightSquared files revamped GPS report with FCC
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesGPS
Wireless telecommunications start-up LightSquared on Thursday filed a report with the FCC that details any potential interference issues its launch would have with existing GPS services, according to a Thursday report. The GPS community opposes LightSquared's plans to build a high-speed wireless network. LightSquared has promised to use a different batch of airwaves that it says would eliminate 99.5 percent of the interference problems found in tests.
LightSquared maintained the interference problems are a result of the GPS manufacturers' design of products "that depend on using spectrum assigned to other FCC licenses." A new proposal from the company would affect only 200,000 GPS devices ou...

Gmail and Calendar refreshed with Google+ matching themes
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
It isn’t just Google+ which is new from the search giant this week. The company has also kicked off a significant refresh of its Gmail and Google Calendar services, with the interfaces of both getting stripped down. According to Google, “adding countless features to Gmail has made it an increasingly powerful communication hub, but along the way the interface has also become more cluttered and complex.”
