Onkyo BD-SP809 Blu-ray deck - for performance over price
Like UnlikeFiled in: Blu-ray PlayersOnkyoBD-SP809
You can get a Blu-ray player with a packet of cornflakes these days, figuratively speaking. The decks are so cheap that, for most, the very concept of a BD spinner costing £500 (a monkey, in cockney rhyming slang) is pure insanity.
However, in the world of home cinema, you tend to get what you pay for. And with cheap and cheerful Blu-ray players, that generally means that you'll get the ability to play high-def movie content, but at the detriment to performance.
Therefore, Onkyo still believes that there's enough of us out there who favour video and audio quality over our bank balances, and as such has crafted the BD-SP809, with a street price of £499.99.
It's a mighty metal beast that weigh...

Apple business website hacked by Anonymous
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
An Apple website has been the subject of a hack by Anonymous, with a small number of users' details leaked on to the web.
The hack is thought to have happened 4 July, with data found on the Apple Business Intelligence website posted on Paste Bin.
While it is only the details of 27 people (including usernames and passwords) the attack was claimed by Anonymous and is all part of the group's antisec campaign, which is targeting business sites.
And hacking Apple, regardless of the size of the bounty at the end of it, is a major feat for the collective – given the amount of data the company holds on the public through its iTunes service.

LulzSec: Lessons can be learned from hacking spree
Like UnlikeA member of the now retired hacking group LulzSec has broken cover for an interview with the New Scientist magazine. And Sabu claims that, although originally for the "lulz", the team's attacks on several large company websites and databases have been instrumental in improving security at those firms.
"Yes, some hacks under LulzSec were done for the lulz, but there are lessons learned from them all," he told New Scientist. "In 50 days, you saw how big and small companies were handling their user data incorrectly."
He continues: "Would you rather your millions of emails, passwords, dox [personal information] and credit cards be exposed to the wild to be used by nefarious dealers of private in...

Like UnlikeFiled in: nVIDIA
Today NVIDIA let it be known that they’ve named Stanford University a CUDA Center of Excellence for their work in parallel computing research using NVIDIA GPUs and NVIDIA CUDA technology. Stanford is one of more than 450 universities and institutions that teach the CUDA programming model within their curriculum and is now one of only 11 institutions already in the CUDA Centers of Excellence program.

HTC Status and LG Thrill 4G To Hit AT&T This Month?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesLGHTCAT&TThrill 4GStatus
Sometime in the last year or so, the carriers picked up a bad new habit. They’d announce that they were getting a phone, talk all about the specs… but then give no indication of when it might actually be available. Maybe it’s because they don’t like making promises they’re not sure they can keep; maybe it’s because they’re hoping that a second announcement — the one containing the pricing/availability details — will stir up a second whirlwind of press. Whatever the motivation, it’s terribly annoying.
Take the Status and the glasses-free 3D LG Thrill for example. The Status just went official last week. The Thrill 4G, however, went official way back in March — and yet, there’s still no offici...

Samsung preps first Windows Phone "Mango" device
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsSamsungMicrosoftWindows Phone 7
Samsung’s first Windows Phone “Mango” device has been listed by standards body Bluetooth SIG as the South Korean electronics giant prepares to lead the pack when Mango phones begin launching this fall. Details surrounding the smartphone are not available for the time being, though the model number SGH-i937 has already been confirmed as the Windows Phone-touting successor to the Samsung Focus, which carried the model number SGH-i917. WMPoweruser.com speculates that the device could feature a case and specs similar to the Galaxy S II — Samsung’s fastest-selling smartphone of all time — but that speculation appears baseless. It looks like Samsung will have stiff competition from Nokia when Mang...

Microsoft Mobile Operating Systems continue to lose Market Share in USA
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows Phone 7
Comscore has released their monthly market share numbers, and confirms the recent Nielsen research showing Windows Phone 7 is not growing in USA.
They reveal 76.8 million people in USA own smartphones, up 11% from 3 months earlier, and Microsoft’s share of that installed base continues to drop rapidly, now sitting at 5.8% or 4.45 million users. This is down 0.9% from 6.7% the previous month.
The effect is likely due to the lack of new Windows Phone 7 handsets being released into the market regularly, unlike on Android, something which will not be as much of an issue next year, when handsets will be released throughout the year rather than in a single wave.
It does moreover show that Microsof...

Apple beats RIM is U.S. market share - Android above both
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleRIM BlackBerryGoogleAndroid
The latest numbers have come out from comScore and it has some revealing stats about the state of the U.S. smartphone market. Basically, Apple and Android are winners while RIM and Microsoft are the losers.
Perhaps helped by the Verizon iPhone, Apple iOS was able to surpass RIM’s BlackBerry OS in overall market share. Apple claimed 26.6 percent of the market while RIM had 24.7 percent, a 4.2 percent drop from February of 2011 (note: the comScore numbers deal with March 2011 figures). This is just the latest bad piece of news for RIM, as the company has been hammered by anonymous letters from employees which don’t express much confidence.

64GB and 4G HP TouchPads landing in August according to leaked roadmap
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksHPTouchPad
According to a purported roadmap image obtained by PreCentral, HP will introduce a new 64GB version of its TouchPad this August alongside a 4G model on AT&T. The 64GB model will apparently offer a “glossy white” finish and could come equipped with a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor that’s clocked at 1.5GHz. AT&T’s 4G TouchPad is expected to come in a black finish and will offer support for the carrier’s HSPA+ network, but will maintain the 32GB capacity of the Wi-Fi model that launched last week. While early reports suggested that HP’s new 7-inch TouchPad, codenamed “Opal,” would launch in August, PreCentral says the tablet is expected to launch in the fall instead.

Microsoft to power English search results on Baidu
Like UnlikeFiled in: Microsoft
Microsoft has struck a deal to provide English search results in Baidu, China’s most popular search engine. According to The Wall Street Journal, Microsoft anticipates that the Bing-labeled English search results will help expand its Bing brand in China. Baidu also hopes that the partnership will help its efforts to expand its search engine to the global market. Chinese users typically use Google for English search results, however, the Chinese government has blocked that search engine — and other Google services, such as the newly launched Google+ — from time to time. Baidu will begin implementing Bing results later this year, although neither company provided an exact date as to when that ...

JailbreakMe 3.0 now live, setting your iPad 2 free
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksAppleiPad 2
iPad 2 owners can now enjoy the freedom of the easiest way to jailbreak their tablet, JailbreakMe 3.0. The tool, developed by @comex, works without the need to connect your iDevice to a computer – you just navigate to www.jailbreakme.com and install everything from there.
This way of jailbreaking differs from others like redsn0w and Pwnage Tool as it doesn't use the limera1n exploit, but rather works with a userland epxloit. It's also nearly completely safe – you can however mess up your device after you get root access. Jailbreakme is easily reversible by means of an iTunes restore and if you ever wondered whether it's legal stateside, you can rest assured that it is as the Library of Cong...

Motorola Droid 3 Gets Leaked From 360 Angles
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesMotorolaDROID 3
Verizon has yet to officially announce Motorola’s Droid 3, but we expect to see that announcement cross the wires in a matter of hours. In fact, we reported along with other sites that the phone should hit shelves on July 14, with pre-order starting July 7. In other words, an official Droid 3 page posting should go down right about now.
When big red finally does get around to posting the Droid 3 page, we’ll get to enjoy the phone from all 360 viewing angles. But until then, the nice folks over at Droid-Life miraculously snagged 360-degree pics a bit early, which we are more than happy to pass along.

HP Pre 3 listed at 399 GBP for Europe
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHPPre3
HP's latest hope for the webOS platform on smartphones, the Pre 3, has been listed on its European web store for the cool price of 399 GBP (US$643) SIM-free. Availability is showing as out-of-stock, and unfortunately prospective owners cannot place a pre-order at this point. A release is hopefully not that far off, though, since the price has been set for the smartphone. As a refresher, the Pre 3 sports a 1.4GHz processor and a 3.6-inch, WVGA (480 x 800 pixel) touchscreen. HP had originally promised the device would hit shelves this summer.

Apple may be shipping 5 million iPad 2s in July alone
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksAppleiPad 2
Some leaked information from part suppliers for the Apple iPad 2 suggest that 5 million touch panels have been ordered by Apple in an effort to ramp up production and strengthen their grip on the still young tablet market.
There are multiple companies that are responsible for supplying these touch panels. Wintek and TPK handle the heaviest load and it is believed they shipped between 1.4 and 1.6 million panels just last month. To meet the demands of Apple they will need to step their game up as well as the smaller suppliers such as the company Cando, amongst others.
It is also possible these touch panels could be designated for the rumored LTE-capable iPad that many believe we will see at ...

Toshiba Thrive makes an early arrival at some BestBuy stores
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksToshibaTHRiVE
The Toshiba Thrive has been up for pre-order for several weeks now, and we are sure that some of you have already taken advantage of the offer. However, if you simply do not have the patience to wait until the 10-inch tablet is ready to leave the warehouse, your nearest BestBuy store may have the Thrive in stock already.
According to numerous reports, Toshiba's Honeycomb-powered slate can be purchased at a number of BestBuy outlets. Our quick check showed that BestBuy does not have the tablet available online at this time, and neither does any other online retailer, for that matter. The bad part, though, is that the Thrive is retailing at about $50 more than what you would paid if you were t...
