The IEEE announced today that it had finalized the 802.22TM white space wireless standards for Wireless Regional Area Networks (WRAN). White space wireless, sometimes called "super Wi-Fi" because of its long range capability and faster throughput, broadcasts data on unused, unlicensed frequencies that were designated for VHF and UHF television broadcast. The new standard will be capable of providing broadband wireless access over a large area, with a range of more than 60 miles from the transmitter. White space wireless can deliver up to 22 Mbps per channel.
The white space standard was sought by Microsoft and other companies to make broadband access available in areas where extending wired ...

Vodafone axes EVO 3D before it even hits shelves

Vodafone axes EVO 3D before it even hits shelves

Posted on Jul 28, 2011 by MG1

Keen-eyed observers, or those who registered to be notified about the EVO 3D, may have noticed a sudden dearth of glasses-free 3D phones coming to Vodafone. Apparently, the British carrier's execs are not the patient type. After several delays, Vodafone has decided to simply ax the handset rather than wait out HTC's supply issues, and has removed it from the company's "Coming Soon" page. Lets just hope its customers are a bit more understanding -- especially those who signed up to get first-crack at the now canceled phone.

Anonymous and LulzSec mount anti PayPal campaign

Posted on Jul 28, 2011 by MG1

Pastebin, the hackers favourite text hosting website, has become home to a written plea, from LulzSec and Anonymous, for readers to close down their PayPal accounts.
The FBI continues to crack down on internet based hacking groups, something which clearly is taking its toll on Anonymous and LulzSec's morale.
"Law enforcement continues to push its ridiculous rules upon us - Anonymous "suspects" may face a fine of up to 500,000 USD with the addition of 15 years' jailtime, all for taking part in a historical activist movement."
"What the FBI needs to learn is that there is a vast difference between adding one's voice to a chorus and digital sit-in with Low Orbit Ion Cannon, and controlling a ...

Acer founder comments on former CEO's move to Samsung

Posted on Jul 28, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: SamsungAcer

On Tuesday, reports surfaced that Acer’s former chief executive officer Gianfranco Lanci has accepted a job at Samsung where he will lead the Korean company’s notebook business. Acer founder Stan Shih spoke with reporters during the ADOC 2.0 technology conference in Taipei on Wednesday and discussed the issue. While the move has yet to be confirmed by Samsung or Acer, Shih noted that it is common for executives to move between firms, especially for better gigs, and that the press should not be surprised. The calm remarks are a bit surprising as there is speculation that Lanci’s move could be a blow to Acer’s laptop business. Acer is currently the world’s No. 4 laptop manufacturer, trailed by...

Study says people are waiting on a cheap tablet from Amazon

Study says people are waiting on a cheap tablet from Amazon

Filed in: Amazon

Android could be getting a huge boost in a few months, if Amazon can hit the market as aggressively as many want. A study from Retrevo is showing that consumers are looking for cheaper tablet options and would seriously consider Amazon if in the market for an iPad competitor.
The study was done with a pretty small group of just 1,000 people, but the results are pretty interesting, if they can be trusted. The results show that, unsurprisingly, cost is the biggest barrier to entry in the tablet world. As far as the "most important factor" in buying a tablet 48% cited cost, with 28% wanting a better screen, and 20% looking for better text input options. A whopping 79% of respondents would cons...

HTC Wildfire S swaggers CDMA bands at FCC

HTC Wildfire S swaggers CDMA bands at FCC

Posted on Jul 28, 2011 by MG1

True to its namesake, the Wildfire S is preparing to blaze across our native prairies without abandon. After gaining the FCC's nod of acceptance for use on our 1900 / 850MHz HSPA bands -- followed by T-Mobile's official announcement -- the fun-sized candybar has received FCC approval for igniting our CDMA networks. A leaked roadmap suggests the Gingerbread treat is destined for US Cellular in October, but don't be surprised if the little guy appears at Cricket, MetroPCS, Virgin Mobile, and the like. Even Verizon could benefit from the Wildfire S, seeing that the Motorola Citrus is downright sour. Just promise not to name it the Droid Burn, okay?

We can't remember a single new WiMAX market being lit up in 2011, meanwhile Verizon just keeps lighting LTE fires all across the country. We've actually given up trying to keep a tally of how many new markets Big Red has launched this year -- there are only so many fingers and toes between the Engadget staff. The carrier just flipped the switch on 28 new markets last week, and now it's announced plans to add at least 15 more on August 18th. In addition to finally blessing the folks in Albany, NY and Tuscon, AZ with a little 4G love, it will also be expanding coverage in in areas including Boston and Salt Lake City. It's the perfect mid-summer gift to go along with a brand new Galaxy S II or ...

Apple's Mac OS X infringes on HTC-owned S3 patents, ITC rules

United States International Trade Commission judge James Gildea has ruled that Apple’s Mac OS X operating system infringes on two patents owned by S3. Judge Gildea also ruled that the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch do not infringe on S3′s patents, however. The patents in question are related to NVIDIA graphics chips used in Apple’s Mac computers, but it is unclear which devices exactly are infringing on S3′s technology. HTC purchased S3 for $300 million in early July, and a different ITC judge recently ruled that the Taiwanese company is guilty of infringing on two patents owned by Apple related to a “system and method for performing an action on a structure in computer-generated data,” and a “...

Microsoft renews alliance with SUSE, throws $100 million in pocket change at Linux

Posted on Jul 27, 2011 by MG1

Microsoft and Linux haven't always had the friendliest of rapports but, a few years back, the folks at Redmond decided to cozy up to Novell and the enterprise-focused distro SUSE. The German arm of the company even wished Tux a happy 20th birthday last week, in an attempt to further thaw their notoriously chilly relationship. Now the Windows crew have decided to renew their partnership with SUSE and have committed to purchasing $100 million in technical support for Microsoft Enterprise customers who also happen to be running Linux boxes as part of their operations. It's not about to stop claiming that the open source OS violates several of its patents, but at least they've learned to get alo...

In the case of glass, the keys could be painted on the surface or shown beneath the surface of the glass on a display, not unlike on-screen keyboards working on smartphones and tablets today.

Barnes & Noble responds to Amazon with Nook iPad app update

Posted on Jul 27, 2011 by MG1

Just as Amazon revealed that it will be offering its iPad app Kindle users access to newspapers and magazines, rival Barnes & Noble has done the same with an announcement that periodical access for its iPad Nook app will come "in the coming days".
The app gives users access to 175 magazines and newspapers although, like the updated Kindle app, Nook has also refused to toe the line with Apple's in-app subscription guidelines. It has removed the Nook store link from the app, and is now offering purchases from the browser at www.nooknewsstand.com.
An update to the Nook for Kids iPad app also sees iPad users, or users' kids that should be, get access to the Nook kids collection - over 550 digita...
