Possible cheaper iPhone is an iPhone 4 look-a-like, replaces glass with plastic
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 4
Cuhiep, the Vietnamese guy whose sources leaked pictures of the iPhone 4 in May last year, which turned out to be the real deal, now claims another leak "from a very reliable source", this time regarding the cheaper version of the iPhone, a so-called iPhone 4S. This affordable one might be introduced along with the next premium iPhone, about which we only know to be dual-core and have an 8MP camera with relative certainty.
We've heard about this cheaper version idea being entertained by Applenumerous times so far, but nothing plausible has appeared to back it up. Tim Cook himself said in May that the iPhone won't be "just for the rich", and that Cupertino is coming up with some "clever thing...

HP TouchPad owners reporting cracks appearing in the device's plastic housing
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsHPTouchPad
It has come to our attention that a number of HP TouchPad owners are having troubles with their tablet. Unfortunately, it is not a software glitch that can be easily fixed with a patch – the issue revolves around cracks in the plastic housing of the device right in between the speakers of the unit and its display or around its headphone socket. The cracks have not been reported to have affected the tablet's functionality in any way so far, yet you would probably agree that such an imperfection is unacceptable when one drops $500 on a brand name gadget.
Reportedly, HP is already aware of the situation and is offering replacement TouchPads to its customers. Those who have contacted the company...

Sprint to build LightSquared's 4G LTE network, get $13.5 billion
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
We hope you’re sitting down, because this next bit of news is not only groundbreaking, but damn right confusing. LightSquared, which right now is nothing more than a PowerPoint presentation bouncing around people’s laptops, is a wireless operator run by a hedge fund who originally planned to contract Nokia Siemens Networks to build out a 4G LTE network using spectrum that was once reserved for satellites. Instead of building out said network, they just announced that they’ve entered into a 15 year agreement with Sprint, who will build their network for them, but not their core operations. LightSquared’s core network, meaning the parts that aren’t the cell towers, will be managed by LightSqua...

Nintendo posts first quarterly operating loss; 3DS now just $169.99
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesNintendo3DS
Nintendo posted its first quarterly operating loss ever on Thursday in its fiscal first quarter earnings report. The Japanese gaming company recorded a net loss of 25.5 billion Yen ($328 million), which was on a par with the net loss of 25.2 billion Yen ($324 million) the firm reported during the same quarter last year. In addition, it posted a net operating loss of 37.7 billion Yen ($485 million), down from an operating profit of 23.3 billion Yen ($299 million) during the first quarter of 2010. Nintendo also slashed the price of the 3DS to $169.99, down from the portable gaming console’s original $249.99 price point. Nintendo attributed the poor quarter to a lack of Wii and DS sales, as wel...

New iPad 3 contract goes to Pegatron, not Foxconn
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksAppleiPad 3
Pegatron has been awarded a new contract to build Apple’s next-generation iPad tablets, Taiwan Economic News reports. According to the report, Pegatron underbid Hon Hai for a new contract to manufacture the iPad 3, which will become available some time near the Thanksgiving holiday according to an earlier report. Hon Hai, owner of infamous Apple manufacturing partner Foxconn, manufactures Apple’s current-generation iPad 2 tablet along with a number of other Apple products. Pegatron is seemingly working hard to increase its production share of Apple devices, however; the Taiwan-based manufacturer reportedly also won an order from Apple to manufacture a total of 15 million iPhone 5 handsets. AT&T may start throttling data speeds in October
Like UnlikeFiled in: AT&T
AT&T will begin to throttle data speeds during the first week of October, 9to5 Mac reported on Thursday. The carrier could move to throttle the data speeds of its biggest data users in an effort to ensure network stability for its first LTE devices, which are expected to launch later this year. It remains unclear how low AT&T will knock the throughput down to, but 9to5 Mac says Virgin currently forces data hogs down to 256Kbps until the next billing cycle after they use more than 2.5GB. T-Mobile also throttles its data speeds after users go over their monthly 5GB “unlimited” cap. The move should actually be beneficial for most AT&T customers looking for stable performance and will only affec...

Vizio Tablet tiptoes into retail, starting at Costco
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsVIZIOVTAB1008
We know it's been a long wait since CES, but after getting pawed at by both Blake Griffin and yours truly, the Vizio Tablet is starting to show up in stores right about on schedule. Frequent Engadget commenter DaHarder took a step away from the Disqus box and snagged this tablet at a local Costco store for $329 ($20 off the regular price), an achievement also unlocked by the folks at Mobileslate. According to their reports you may have to ask around to find out if the VTAB1008 is actually in stock but it may be lurking along with its $40 Accessories Kit, while it's already showing in stock on the Vizio online store. Impressions so far suggest a "budget" tablet experience above that of the fl...

ARM Swings 29 More Processor Licenses, Ships 1.1 Billion Chips
Like UnlikeFiled in: CPU
Cambridge chip designer ARM Holdings posted results for its second quarter and half year ended June 30, 2011. Revenue for the quarter jumped 27 percent to $190.2 million, up from $150.3 million one year prior. Total revenue for the year did slightly better, jumping 28 percent from $293.6 million one year ago to $375.7 million in the first half of 2011. Those numbers are somewhat modest by chip giant standards, but it's worth noting ARM added 29 processor licenses in the second quarter alone.
"In the first half of 2011, we have seen strong license revenues driven by an increase in design activity around ARM technology across a broad range of end applications," ARM CEO Warren East said in a st...

Electronic Arts Quarterly Revenue Approaches $1 Billion
Like UnlikeVideogame publisher Electronic Arts announced preliminary financial results for its first fiscal quarter ended June 30, 2011, posting numbers that came in higher than what analysts were expecting. EA's GAAP total net revenue for the quarter settled in at $999 million, up 23 percent from the $815 million it posted in the same quarter one year ago.
"This was another solid quarter driven by both digital and packaged goods," said John Riccitiello, Chief Executive Officer. "We saw strong digital revenue growth over the prior year. On packaged goods, NCAA is off to a great start and pre-orders for Battlefield 3 are tracking extremely well."
EA said its digital games revenue grew 11 percent from a ...

Google Fiber puts boots on the ground, begins detail engineering in Kansas Cities
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
We've come a long way since Google first started taking about launching a fiber-based ISP -- from beta tests, to hopeful communities, to Topeka fools day, to selecting not one, but two Kansas Cities. Now, it's "boots on the ground," time according to the Google Fiber blog: detail engineering starts now. In the coming weeks, Kansas City residents (presumably on both sides of the Kansas / Missouri border) can expect to see El Goog's engineers measuring phone poles, gathering geographical data, and asking hard-hitting questions, like "What is your address?" All this footwork will help Google get a head start on building that sweet, ultra-high-speed gigabit network. Not the most glamorous bit of...
