Android now on nearly half of all smartphones

Posted on Aug 03, 2011 by MG1

There are over 500,000 daily Android activations and we know this for a fact, but the platform has proliferated to now reach nearly half of all smartphones in the world, research gurus from Canalys stated in a report summarizing data for the second quarter of the year. To be perfectly correct, Android's exact market share stands at 48% as per the researchers, with Asia Pacific being the largest market out there.

Google's platform has taken the crown by shipments in the fourth quarter of 2010 and since then it's only increasing its presence. In the second quarter, Android phone shipments stood at 51.9 million units, skyrocketing 379% on the year. Samsung, HTC and LG were in the forefront o...

Based on the estimated electricity use of Google's data centers published by Jon Koomey, Data Center Knowledge believes that Google currently runs about 900,000 servers to power its empire.
Google representatives apparently told Koomey, who publishes an influential annual data center power consumption report for the New York Times, that Google's data centers consumed less than 1 percent of the world's combined data center electricity consumption of about 198.8 billion kWh in 2010. Google's computers could be using somewhere in the neighborhood of 220 MW, which would point about 900,000 servers, Koomey believes. The researcher also noted that Google provisions about 50 MW of available power f...

The geeks at GTVHackers have built an unofficial Honeycomb Android OS upgrade specifically for the Revue. The upgrade can be downloaded right now. There is a catch though, the update could ruin your device and you might not be able to revert to the official OS. The update is a beta offering and is not ready for the gene...

Retailers Are Returning Google TVs Because the Apps Suck
First, let's state the obvious: Google TV has awesome potential for music fans, as well as anyone else with a clear motivation to use electronics.
This platform, available in a set-top box or built into televisions and Blu-ray players, could realize the dream of internet-capable electronics that has blistered like a raisin in the sun since the day when WebTV first awkwardly attached a mouse and a keyboard to the television.
Among countless other things, Google TV could let music fans play their tunes on the best speakers in the house, regardless of whether it's stored on their computers, in the cloud, or on the digital music service of...

Carnegie Mellon researchers use photo-tagging to violate privacy, prove nothing social is sacred

Posted on Aug 02, 2011 by MG1

Some people never forget a face and the same, it seems, can be said for the internet. With some off-the-shelf facial recognition software, a connection to the cloud and access to social networking data, Carnegie Mellon University researchers have proved tagging can be the everyman's gateway to privacy violation. Using a specially-designed, AR-capable mobile app, Prof. Alessandro Acquisti and his team conducted three real-world trials of the personal info mining tech, successfully identifying pseudonymed online daters and campus strolling college students via Facebook. In some cases, the application was even able to dredge up the students' social security digits and personal interests -- from...

German geniuses hit 800Mbps with light bulb WLAN

Last year, Chinese scientists showed off some new old-school tech, transmitting data with blue LEDs that flicker faster than the human eye can perceive. This throwback back to the good ol' days of IR receivers was able to hit speeds of 2Mbps, but leave it to the fine folks at the Heinrich Hertz Institute to push the light bulb networking tech to the extremes. Earlier this year researchers hit 500Mbps with white LEDs now, using a combination of white, green, blue, and red, the team ramped that up to 800Mbps, officially putting Ethernet on notice. The line-of-site networking wont actually replace your standard Cat 5 line or WiFi router, but it could find a home in places like hospitals where r...

Nintendo 3DS titles to get in-game purchasing later this year

Nintendo 3DS titles to get in-game purchasing later this year

Posted on Aug 02, 2011 by MG1

Nintendo needs to milk more out of its revenue-generating units -- er, that's us -- in order to reassure anxious investors. Hence Satoru Iwata's mention at a financial Q&A of plans to allow in-game premium DLC on 3DS titles by the end of this year. He said he was wary that the Nintendo brand could be damaged by low-quality DLC, but was nevertheless keen to offer 3DS customers a way to purchase extra levels or features that extend the life of a game. It's about time Nintendo spruced up its online offerings, but we'd rather spend our arcade money on this.

Rumors have iPhone 3GS stock low, absent in some regions

Posted on Aug 02, 2011 by MG1

Shipments of the iPhone 3GS are diminishing rapidly, at least in certain regions, a report claims. Sources from "a major European iPhone carrier," for instance, say they are expecting few new units to arrive in upcoming weeks. An informant at a "major US based iPhone reseller" meanwhile claims that 3GS stock is substantially lower than normal. The person adds that in several regions in the US, no 3GS shipments are happening at all.
A source "with a hand" in Apple's global shipping operations explains that shipments are dropping rapidly, with little left in the channel. Lastly, a person with a "popular international carrier" alleges that the 3GS has disappeared from the company's stock databa...

HTC Droid Incredible 2 lightens up with new silver wardrobe

Posted on Aug 02, 2011 by MG1

Tired of your ho-hum black original HTC Droid Incredible? Thinking of trading up for a shiny new Gingerbread model? Well, this may influence your decision a bit. Pocketnow is reporting that Verizon will soon be offering a new silver version of the HTC Droid Incredible 2 (Incredible S) to be sold alongside the original black edition. Keeping suit with many other lighter phones we've seen these days, the company chose a pretty standard two-tone design and will keep the same specs as its elder sibling. Pricing should be the same as well, although, with a number of new devices due out soon, perhaps a discount could be in order. No word yet on a release date, but keep your eyes peeled -- especial...

Skype for iPad officially released and then pulled

Filed in: TabletsAppleiPad 2

Good news for iPad 2 owners! Skype has released an official version for iPads, so you no longer have to rely on the iPhone app for your video calls. Of course the iPhone app would be a smaller video window, or an odd fullscreen option, but now Skype can be enjoyed on the iPad screen in its full glory.
Skype for iPad supports video calling, audio calling and chat on WiFi or 3G. Of course, in order to get two-way video calling you'll need an iPad 2, but OG iPad owners will still be able to receive video calls even though they won't be able to send video. The app also brings all the other features you'd expect in a Skype app, like push notifications for chat and communication histories.

Chrome's growth slows in July according to new browser share data

Posted on Aug 02, 2011 by MG1

Research firm Net Applications released its most recent browser share trend report on Monday. The latest information suggests that adoption of the Chrome web browser slowed slightly, possibly due to an increase in Safari’s popularity. Chrome had a 13.45% market share during the month of July, up .34 percentage points from the 13.11% share it had in June. Between May and June, however, Chrome’s market share increased .59 percentage points. Apple’s Safari web browser had a 8.05% share of the web browser market during July, up .57 percentage points from June. Despite declines in market share, Internet Explorer and Firefox remain the two most popular browser options with a 52.81% and 21.48% shar...

Apple TV gets software update, preliminary iCloud support

Apple issued an update to its Apple TV product on Monday that will allow users to stream purchased high-definition TV shows directly from iTunes. Specifically, Apple says the update will enable:
iTunes TV Shows: Purchase your favorite TV shows directly from the iTunes Store, and watch the shows you already own, commercial-free in HD.
Vimeo: Browse and play videos from Vimeo, access your video inbox, and mark videos you want to watch later.
When Apple first launched the Apple TV, it only allowed users to rent movies and shows and there was not an option to purchase titles for permanent ownership. For users in the U.S., Apple has also rolled out preliminary iCloud support with this update, all...
