Even if you're lucky enough to toil away in an enlightened work places that lets you Tweet away to your heart's content during the day, your boss might not be very understanding if your feed's full of porn links from your potty-minded pals. Your days over hovering over bit.ly links, paralyzed in fear may soon be over. Twitter's rolling out a new tweak to its API that will let you block your friends' linkbombs from even showing up.
"Beginning today you may notice a new boolean field in API responses & streams containing tweets: "possibly_sensitive," Taylor Singletary and the Twitter Platform team announced on its developer blog. "This new field will only surface when a tweet contains a link. ...

Windows 8 Will Run Windows 7 Software Just Fine

Windows 8 Will Run Windows 7 Software Just Fine

Posted on Aug 01, 2011 by MG1

While the jump from Windows XP to Vista resulted in some compatibility headaches, the move from Vista to Windows 7 was far more pain-free. What will the upgrade to Windows 8 be like? According to Microsoft, it'll be easy.
“The gateway to get to Windows 8 is Windows 7, and we will have backward compatibility with Windows 7 embedded into Windows 8. That's something that we're very committed to. But that's a really important first pillar,” Kevin Turner, Microsoft's COO said at the Worldwide Partner Conference 2011.
Despite having a slick new tile interface, the desktop underneath for Windows 8 appears to closely resemble that from Windows 7.

UK police: Jack Davis is definitely LulzSec's Topiary

UK police: Jack Davis is definitely LulzSec's Topiary

Posted on Aug 01, 2011 by MG1

The British authorities are convinced that the now-named 18-year-old Jack Davis, arrested on one of the Shetland Islands, Scotland last week is indeed the famed Topiary, one of the leaders and founders of LulzSec.
Reports at the end of the week suggested that the UK police may have arrested the wrong man, with clues, such as chat logs and a public "doxing" hinting that the real Topiary was in fact Daniel Ackerman Sandberg, a 22-year-old man from Uppsala, Sweden, but that has been dismissed by the force.
Davis will appear, therefore, in court today charged with five separate offences including unauthorised access to a computer system, conspiracy with others to carry out a Distributed Denial o...

HTC Desire Gingerbread update available, excludes US and comes with long list of caveats

Posted on Aug 01, 2011 by MG1

First off, if you own the North American variant of this handset then you're out of luck. Likewise, Japanese, South Korean and some German handsets are also excluded. Still here? Okay then, but you might not like what comes next. We already knew that either the Sense UI or some pre-installed apps would be cleared out to make room in the Gingerbread house, but now it seems the update is so unstable that HTC is only prepared to release it as a ROM via its developer site. That means a factory reset of your device, a bunch of worries about SMS and MMS not working properly, and a cold disclaimer in the event of things going wrong. Still, at least HTC gave (some of) us the choice. Visit the source...

Anyone Can Access Microsoft's Massive Location Database and See Where Your Laptop and Smartphone Have Been

Anyone Can Access Microsoft's Massive Location Database and See Where Your Laptop and Smartphone Have Been

Posted on Aug 01, 2011 by MG1

Microsoft has been going around and building a database of publicly broadcast MAC addresses (along with their corresponding street address) for location services purposes. That might include those of your phones and laptops. Problem is, Microsoft didn't secure the database.
According to a report from Cnet's Declan McCullagh, Microsoft is gathering data from Windows 7 handsets that connect to wi-fi networks, along with cars that go around sniffing out hotspots, and logging it all here. But because they're being lax in protecting that database, anyone can get access to the data. Cnet entered in various MAC addresses into the database themselves and had very specific location data returned to t...

The winners of the 2011 Pwnies will be announced Aug. 3 at the BlackHat USA reception in Las Vegas.
LulzSec and Anonymous are nominated for Pwnies in the Epic 0wnage category, the former for providing "many Lulz" while "hacking everynone" during the group's 50-day hacking spree, the latter for the HBGary hack that led to the resignation of that security firm's CEO.
Also nominated for the Epic 0wnage award are Stuxnet, the weapons-class computer worm that wreaked havoc with Iran's nuclear program, and the WikiLeaks publication of...

SEO Firm Sells Google 'Plus Ones' for Profit

Posted on Aug 01, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Google

A new search engine optimization firm called Plussems is offering package deals on Google +1 button clicks, The Atlantic reported this week.
The +1 button, which Google launched earlier this year, lets online users who hold a Google account vote up or give kudos to a site, search result, or online advertisement. Plus-oneing something likely affects search ranking results, although Google has been cagey about stating how the information is used or will be used in the future, once it has collected and analyzed data over time. Any Google account holder can click the +1 button at any time after signing in.
Plussems, which is owned by SEOShop.biz, is selling 50 clicks for $9.99, 250 clicks for $6...

Google Music Beta account holders get two invites each

Google Music Beta account holders get two invites each

Posted on Aug 01, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Google

If Google didn’t see fit to bless you with an invite to the launch of its Google Music Beta program you may have felt slighted. You may even know someone that got into the beta round and been more than a little jealous. I hope that jealousy didn’t turn into some sort of bitter feud though considering the announcement that Google has now made.
Each of the people that got into the launch of Google Music Beta now has two invites that they can bestow upon their besties. If you are one of those besties this may be one of your last chances to get in until the service leaves beta. If you managed to completely miss the launch of the service back in May, Google music is sort of a cloud storage place ...
