Nokia may unveil first Windows Phone this month
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftNOKIAWindows Phone 7
Nokia may be planning to unveil its first Windows Phone later this month, the unwired reports. The site claims to have obtained an invitation to a party hosted by both Nokia and Microsoft. Scheduled to take place on August 17th during the annual GamesCom trade show in Cologne, Germany, the event will apparently include a raffle of three Xbox 360 consoles and three Windows Phones built by Nokia. The invitation does note that the aforementioned Windows Phones will be delivered to winners “as soon as available,” so we’re not entirely convinced the event will follow any sort of announcement. And the choice of venue for such an announcement is at the very least curious, if not illogical. We know ...

Verizon promo shaves $50 off the price of select tablets when you buy a smartphone
Like UnlikeFiled in: Verizon Wireless
Continuing to be one of Big Red’s staples, the carrier is heavily known for advertising buy one, get one free promotions with its selection of handsets. However, they’ve been relatively low key in regards to promotions with tablets. Luckily, things are starting to change!
From the looks of it, Verizon quietly rolled out a new tablet promotion that starts today and goes on throughout the rest of the month. Essentially, customers that buy smartphones with a 2-year contract are entitled to get a $50 discount off select tablets on their lineup.
Specifically, they would have to pick up any of their 3G or 4G enabled tablets with an accompanying 2-year agreement to receive the discount. However, ...

Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsToshibaTHRiVE
Toshiba’s Android Honeycomb tablet, the Thrive, has just recently got a price cut for eBay’s Daily Deal. You can now grab the 8GB Honeycomb tablet for a mere $379 instead of the standard $429. Even better, shipping is free, too. With very little time left, if you want to jump onto this deal, you best do it quickly.

Shipping with more ports than any other tablet we’ve seen to date, the Thrive is a powerful tablet that makes up for its chunkiness with its full HDMI and USB port, SD Card slot. While you may no...

Square Processing $4 Million A Day, Doubling in October
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
Square, the mobile payments company headed by Twitter founder Jack Dorsey, is now processing $4 million in payments each day. That’s quite a leap over its millions-per-week figure just nine months ago. And when you consider the fact that Square only opened its doors for business just 10 months ago, its really a testament to its staying power and influence in mobile commerce.
TechCrunch reports:
After passing the $3 million mark at the end of May, Square is now processing $4 million in mobile payments daily, and is on track to reach over $100 million in transactions in July. And COO Keith Rabois tells us that he expects the company to double this volume by October.
If the daily dollar figure ...

HTC Desire gets updated to Gingerbread, but not really
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsHTCGoogleDesireAndroid 2.3
If you are among the bunch of people still holding on to their trusty HTC Desire, you might not like the news that we have to share with you. It looks like the smartphone will not be treated to Gingerbread after all, or at least not in the form of a full-fledged update that HTC was expected to release by the end of July.
Technically, an official Gingerbread ROM for the HTC Desire will be available for download, yet it will not be pushed out to the general public due to a number of issues that the HTC developer team simply couldn't hurdle. HTC stated on its Facebook page that “certain functions may no longer be usable after re-flashing the ROM, including but not limited to MMS and SMS”, but ...

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 kept from Australians by Apple injunction
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsSamsungAppleGALAXY Tab 10.1
Apple has taken its patent infringement and trade dress case against Samsung to the land down under, as it has now filed an injunction against Samsung with Australian courts. As a result, Samsung has agreed to stop promoting its Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet in Australia until the court case is resolved.
As part of the agreement, Apple will pay Samsung unspecified damages should Apple lose the court case, which is set for August 29. Apple's complaints with the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Australia are the same as it has filed in the U.S., namely that it "slavishly copied" Apple's existing designs with the intent to confuse customers.

LG has announced the worldwide roll out of its Remote Call services, which provide smartphone users with remote maintenance and software upgrades. The service was initially launched in LG's home market of Korea.
The Remote Call services allows LG to diagnose software issues in the phone without forcing the user to visit a support center. LG's technicians can connect to the phone through cellular or Wi-Fi internet connections. LG says that the Remote Call app cannot access any personal information, such as messages, contacts, and call logs, on the device. Additionally, the LG FOTA (firmware over-the-air) app allows users to easily download the latest software updates for their particular phon...

Samsung prepping 7" Super AMOLED Plus display for tablets with increased resolution
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsSamsung
Samsung Mobile Display recently opened the new OLED display factory, and is now rumored to upgrade the resolution of its 7" Super AMOLED display prototype to 1024x768 pixels, for eventual tablet appearance.
While this is a far cry from the rumored iPad 3 double resolution of 1536x2048, let's not forget this will be the largest AMOLED display on a mobile device, so some tradeoffs are inevitable until Samsung preps the LITI production method, which will bring "Retina Display" resolutions to Super AMOLED screens as well.
There is also a speculation that the 7" tablet display will shift to Samsung's newer Super AMOLED Plus technology, instead of Super AMOLED, which will mean cheaper production,...

Verizon Wireless starts paying the piper - $4.5 billion dividend payment goes to Vodafone
Like UnlikeFiled in: Verizon Wireless
Vodafone is the third largest mobile carrier in the world after China Mobile and Singapore's SingTel, serving about 340 million subscribers around the globe, but the largest one by revenue. It holds a 45% stake in Verizon Wireless, while the rest is owned by Verizon Communications Inc.
Due to the high costs incurred while Verizon was upgrading its 3G and LTE networks in the past few years, Vodafone hadn't been paid for its stake in VZW since 2005, because Big Red was mostly paying off debt for that period.
Investors were getting increasingly wary of the situation, but now they have a reason to pop the champagne bottles. Verizon is finally debt-free, and will pay out part of its profits as di...

Apple iPhone 5 won't launch until October, report claims
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 4s
Despite multiple reports suggesting Apple and AT&T are each blocking employee vacations and making preparations for increased foot traffic in September, a new rumor suggests the iPhone won’t actually launch until October. Journal blog AllThingsD cites multiple anonymous sources in claiming Apple’s next-generation iPhone will launch in October, possibly even late in the month. “I don’t know why AT&T’s calling for all hands on deck those weeks, but it’s not for an iPhone launch,” one of the blog’s sources said, responding to questions about why AT&T might have blacked out employee vacations in late September. Other sources the blog spoke with said the handset would launch late in the month. Ea...

Microsoft's Windows Phone revenue "abysmal," $613 million at best
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows Phone 7
Microsoft's annual report for the company's fiscal 2011 reveals more than what is on the surface – an interesting tidbit about Windows Phone revenue seems to be hiding under the Entertainment and Devices Division section. With a total of $8.716 billion and a reported revenue from Xbox 360 alone standing at $8.103 billion, the biggest Windows Phone revenue one could end up with by a simple subtraction is the “abysmal” $613 million, Seattle Pi concluded.
This would put Zune, Mediaroom, Surface and hardware revenue at close to zero, which – of course – seems unlikely, so chances are that the final sum is even lower for WP. In addition, we also have to count the fact that Redmond's fiscal year s...
