Ghosting issues haunt Lenovo ThinkPad X220

Ghosting issues haunt Lenovo ThinkPad X220

Posted on Aug 04, 2011 by MG1

Some Lenovo customers are concerned about ghosting on LCD screens in the ThinkPad X220 laptop, in which images temporarily remain fixed on screens, but the company tried to allay fears by saying that images dissipate in a short time and do not damage panels.
The ghosting phenomena -- commonly called image persistence -- are common to LCDs and do not cause images to burn into displays, said Ray Gorman, a Lenovo spokesman, in an email. But some customers have raised concerns, saying the image persistence was prominent, and the issue was not as seemingly normal as projected by Lenovo.

Texas Instruments May Sell OMAP Division

Texas Instruments May Sell OMAP Division

Posted on Aug 03, 2011 by MG1

There's a rumor that Texas Instruments is looking to sell its OMAP division while it's still one of the key players in the mobile sector.
SemiAccurate reports that Texas Instruments is currently trying to sell off its high-end ARM-based OMAP (Open Multimedia Application Platform) division.
So far the company hasn't announced anything official, but the reason behind the possible sale is merely to get out while it's still riding high as one of the few key players in the mobile sector, potentially raking in some serious cash. Although still slated as rumor, the possible sale will likely happen once its OMAP 5 SoC is out the door, one of the first SoCs based on ARM's A15 design and reportedly "s...

NSA Recruiters Drooling In Anticipation Of DEFCON

NSA Recruiters Drooling In Anticipation Of DEFCON

Posted on Aug 03, 2011 by MG1

Can you access protected networks without breaking a sweat? Does just thinking about security exploits get you hot and bothered? Are "spoofing" and "packet sniffing" part of your regular vocabulary? If you answered "Yes" to those questions, and you can prove your hacking prowess at the upcoming DEFCON convention, you may just wind up getting a job offer (and a pension plan) from government agencies like the NSA.
Seeing government agents trying to awkwardly fit in at DEFCON is nothing new, but this year the NSA's heading to Vegas with big recruiting numbers to fill. Reuters reports the agency's looking to hire 1,500 new employees – most of them cyber geniuses – by the end of September, then a...

Posted on Aug 03, 2011 by MG1

ac OS X Server has long been able to manage preferences and settings for multiple Macs, but new to Lion Server is the ability to manage settings for iOS devices - this is part of Apple's overarching strategy to slowly merge the two operating systems over time.

To manage iOS, Lion Server administrators can use the new Profile Manager to create XML files called Profiles - these profiles can then be downloaded by users, or pushed out to users devices by administrators to manage email settings, password requirements, network settings, and even remotely lock and wipe devices in the event of theft.

Valve Announces $1 Million DOTA 2 Tournament

Valve Announces $1 Million DOTA 2 Tournament

Posted on Aug 03, 2011 by MG1

There are several different ways to increase your net worth by seven figures. You could rob a bank, though that comes with a huge downside. If you have a killer jump shot, the NBA pays obscene amounts of money to its players, only the league is currently in a lockout. You could toil away for the man, only there's not much of a fun factor there. Yet another way is to participate in, and conquer Valve's newly announced "The International" tournament, and that's exactly what 16 teams will do.
Valve's tournament is the first time DOTA 2 will be shown in public. In case you're not familiar, DOTA stands for Defense of the Ancients, which itself began as a mod for Warcraft 3. Valve wrapped its tent...

Google is facing nine antitrust complaints in Europe, two sources who wish to remain unnamed told Reuters. The complaints began in February of last year and came from three companies. To date, the European Commission has only confirmed four cases against Google.
"The Commission has nine formal complaints now. The new complaints come from small companies," said one of the sources. Another source said three of the complaints came from national regulators, while two others were new ones.
The EU regulator officially opened the case against Google in November last year for allegedly demoting the web search results from three small companies because they were rivals. Microsoft also complained to t...

Earlier today we reported that Apple and Samsung were tangled in a legal battle in Australia where Cupertino had prevented the Korean company from releasing their Galaxy Tab 10.1 in that country. In an unrelated story, the tides have turned on Apple as they are facing damages of $25.5 million in a Korean class action lawsuit.
The suit, handed by the Miraelaw law firm, contests that Apple’s iPhone violated domestic laws on privacy. The complaint stems from accusations earlier this year that Apple had been tracking user’s locations in iOS 4 without consent.

Posted on Aug 03, 2011 by MG1

Well, hello beautiful! Can't say we were expecting to see RIM launch a new BlackBerry this evening, but we're sure there's quite a few of you out there that'll take it. The same BlackBerry Torch 2 that we previewed back in June has made the trek over to Ma Bell's network, with a 'Coming Soon' page emerging just moments ago. AT&T claims that this is the world's first 4G BlackBerry on its airwaves, but of course, that asterisk upside the "4G" logo couldn't possibly be more telling. Regardless, the full-featured slider will arrive with BlackBerry 7 OS, a full QWERTY keyboard, sliding display, 1.2GHz processor, 8GB of onboard memory, room for 32GB of expandable storage, 720p video capture, inbui...
