Qualcomm Overhauls The Snapdragon Brand, Ditches The Confusing Chipset Names

Qualcomm Overhauls The Snapdragon Brand, Ditches The Confusing Chipset Names

Posted on Aug 04, 2011 by MG1

If you’ve got any smartphone made in the last year or so that isn’t made by Apple or Samsung, chances are preeeetty good that it’s powered by one of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chipsets. Now, as for the chances that you could actually name which Snapdragon chipset it has… yeah, pretty much zilch.
The problem: outside of the overarching “Snapdragon” brand, Qualcomm hasn’t done the best job in differentiating which chipset is which. MSM8260? MSM855T? MSM8930? OMGWTFBBQ? I do this for my job, and I still wouldn’t be able to tell you which one is which without a cheat sheet.
This morning, Qualcomm is announcing a bit of an overhaul involving the Snapdragon brand. It should make things a bit less confu...

Skype developing native “video engine” for Windows Phone 7

Skype developing native “video engine” for Windows Phone 7

Posted on Aug 04, 2011 by MG1

A job posting by Skype has dispelled any rumour that Skype video calling will not be coming Windows Phone 7.5.
In the job posting Skype is looking for a developer to optimise their Video Engine solution for Windows and Windows Phone , with the aim of releasing an update every 2 months.
The fact that they are looking for a C++ developer confirms the solution will be native rather than 3rd party, given that those developers are confined to Silverlight and XNA.
So far we have only seen one confirmed device with a front-facing camera, the Samsung SGH i937, but the Nokia Sea Ray is also expected to sport one.

Google has updated its Google+ app for Android smartphones with some needed bug fixes and functionality improvements. Most notably, notifications are said to be more reliable, and you can now share posts with individual people rather than just groups.
In addition to the more reliable notifications, notifications for when people add you to a circle are now shown in bulk instead of individually. Clicking a "+mention" in a comment or post will now take you to that user's profile, and "+mentions" will now auto-complete with usernames from your Circles. The stream will no longer reset when the screen is rotated, and accuracy for the Nearby stream has been improved. You can now start a one-on-one ...

Apple fined over location tracking in Korea

Apple's South Korean division has been fined over the location tracking scandal which broke up a couple of months ago, after it was made clear that iDevices collected location data from users for up to a year without proper permission. The fine imposed by the South Korean communications regulator amounts to the the negligible $2,855 (3 million won), but what's more important is that the company is starting to compensate people over the issue. Earlier, Apple settled for nearly $1,000 in compensation to a Korean man for the same issue.
Nearly 27,800 owners of iOS devices are actually plotting a class action suit to fight Apple over location tracking. If lost, the legal battle could mean that C...

Apple rumored to be prepping imminent 'iTunes Replay' launch

Posted on Aug 04, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Apple

Apple is preparing to launch a new service that will allow iTunes users to re-download previously purchased music, movies and TV shows for free, AppAdvice reports. The service may also support some streaming functionality according to the report, though such functionality may be limited. In the past, iTunes users who lose content from their libraries were forced to either purchase the content again or essentially beg and plead with Apple customer service until they agreed to assist with free content restoration. This ridiculous practice is now in the process of coming to an end. AppAdvice claims to have confirmed the imminent launch of the iTunes Reply service with multiple sources, and such...

RIM gets touchy: BlackBerry Torch 9850 and 9860 announced

RIM gets touchy: BlackBerry Torch 9850 and 9860 announced

Posted on Aug 04, 2011 by MG1

At its press event in London today, RIM outed all the details about its biggest global launch ever, to 225 carriers, of a fresh handsets crop with the brand spanking new BlackBerry 7 OS.
The new announcements included RIM's hyped all-touchscreen phone BlackBerry Torch 9850/9860, and the BlackBerry Torch 8910, a successor to the original Torch, which will be exclusive to AT&T in August.
The more interesting handset, however, is undoubtedly the BlackBerry Torch 9850/9860. Under the 9850 number it will appear with CDMA radio with Sprint and U.S. Cellular, while the GSM version 9860 will land on AT&T, Rogers, Tellus and Bell in North America, with HSPA+ radio inside. RIM touts the ergonomics of...

Nokia N8 is used to shoot at the world's biggest stop-motion animation set

Posted on Aug 04, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Cell PhonesNOKIAN8

The Nokia N8 is still the reigning king in smartphone cameras with its 12-megapixel Carl Zeiss lens. But is it fit enough to shoot at the world's largest stop-motion animation set spreading on over 11,000 square feet? The answer is yes, but it took not one, but three Nokia N8s to produce this breath-taking minute and a half production called Gulp. The marine-themed stop-motion film Gulp narrates the story of a fisherman going out in the sea only to meet adventure and get eaten by a huge fish, but we won't spoil the whole thing.
Interestingly, when shooting the film the three Nokia N8s were used only for capturing stills, not video. The numerous images were then stitched together giving the ...

PayPal announces winners of its third developer challenge

PayPal announces winners of its third developer challenge

Posted on Aug 04, 2011 by MG1

PayPal announced winners of its third developer challenge, which if you recall was all about Android. According to the official line, judges had a “great time reviewing all of the submissions” and were pleased to see solutions that demonstrate how mobile payments will change the way we pay and get paid in the future. Without further ado, here are the winners:
1. Mopper (winner of $25K)
This little mobile app (and an accompanying service in the background) is made to reach customers through Print Commerce. Read something you like (an ad), scan a QR tag, and click pay with PayPal. It’s dead simple, yet it works.
2. PayPal for ThruTu Button (winner of $15K)
ThruTu allows users to share all kind...

ASUS Eee Pad Slider available in the Netherlands for 499 EUR

ASUS Eee Pad Slider available in the Netherlands for 499 EUR

Posted on Aug 04, 2011 by MG1

Asus has somewhat strange strategy for its Eee Pad Slider tablet. The Honeycomb device with a side sliding QWERTY keyboard has been delayed in the UK for autumn, while in Poland it’s set to be released later this month. One more country is now included in the story – the Netherlands, where users can now grab the Slider. Seems to me Asus is using Holland as a test bed for its slightly weird product which weighs a whole lot more than most users are willing to accept. In that sense, I find Asus’ other device, Eee Pad Transformer, to be way more appealing, offering the keyboard as an optional accessory.
Anyway, interested users can buy the 32GB version of Asus’ Slider for 499 EUR (about $709), w...

AT&T to launch BlackBerry Torch 9810 this month, Torch 9860 and Bold 9900 later this year

Posted on Aug 04, 2011 by MG1

Research in Motion has had better days -- and years, for that matter -- but it's always had a loyal partner in AT&T, a company that's cranked out BlackBerry products faithfully for the past twelve years. The tradition continues, as the GSM giant has announced its intentions to bring the 4G BlackBerry Torch 9810 (aka the Torch 2) to stores sometime this month, followed by the 4G BlackBerry Torch 9860 and 4G Bold 9900 "later this year." No specific dates or prices were given on any of the devices.
The Torch 9810 comes with a 1.2GHz CPU, 3.2-inch touch display, a total of 8GB internal memory (with microSD expansion up to 32GB), and a 5 megapixel camera with 720p HD video capture. Oh, and about ...

Smartphones and tablets now responsible for 30% of Gameloft's sales

Smartphones and tablets now responsible for 30% of Gameloft's sales

Posted on Aug 04, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Cell PhonesTablets

No one could have predicted that the most popular genre of software for smartphones would have been games. When Applelaunched the iPhone the App Store didn’t even exist, yet now it’s responsible for a sizable chunk of revenue for developers such as Gameloft. During the first half of 2010, the French gaming company scored 76.8 million EUR ($109.2 million) in terms of revenue; 30% of that (23 million EUR; $32.7 million) was from “smart devices”, in other words phones and tablets. This is inline with what the CEO of Electronic Arts, John Riccitiello, said a few days ago in an interview with Industry Gamers. He claims that dedicated gaming consoles make up just 40% of the gaming industry now, co...

If you're a Londoner who's struggling to live within your means, T-Mobile is hoping its latest You Fix plans are the solution to your budgetary woes. The Magenta-clad carrier's UK arm promotes You Fix as the ultimate hybrid of pay monthly and pay-as-you-go. Customers sign a 12 month commitment to one of three plans that range between £15.50 ($25) and £26 ($42) per month, and the most expensive plan brings 300 minutes and texts. Once the allotment is met, consumers can top off their accounts based on T-Mobile's traditional PAYG rates, or bide their time until the new month rolls around. Additionally, You Fix'ers may choose between one of seven free add-ons each month, including options to add...

Samsung acquires memory maker Grandis

Samsung acquires memory maker Grandis

Posted on Aug 04, 2011 by MG1

Samsung announced on Tuesday that it has purchased Grandis, a maker of spin transfer torque random access memory (STT-RAM). Grandis will be wrapped inside Samsung’s existing research and development branch where it will continue to work on memory semiconductor technology. According to its website, Grandis “holds a unique, broad patent portfolio in STT-RAM, including key fundamental and practical implementation patents, and licenses its IP to technology companies that design, develop and manufacture a variety of products incorporating stand-alone and embedded STT-RAM memory,” so we wouldn’t be surprised if Samsung made the purchase in an effort to boost its patent portfolio as part of ongoing...
