Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsT-MobileGoogleG2myTouch 4GAndroid 2.3
Once seen as the heavy handed power punch combo for Big Magenta, both the T-Mobile G2 and myTouch 4G are getting just a little bit of spark back into their lives thanks to their upcoming Android 2.3 Gingerbread updates.
For a while now, we’ve been hearing lots of information about it, but we’ve actually started to hear news about their roll out of late – albeit, some are still eagerly awaiting for its arrival. Well, for those who seemingly are unable to get the highly anticipated update to Gingerbread, customers can head into their local T-Mobile store starting on August 6th to get it. However, it’s worth noting that handset owners located in the midwest and west regions will need to wait un...

HTC to launch as many as eight new smartphones in Q3
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTC
HTC chief executive Peter Chou on Tuesday said that the Taiwan-based smartphone vendor is scheduled to launch between six and eight new smartphone models this quarter. HTC continues to report record quarter after record quarter, and the onslaught of new handsets it is preparing for the fall season will give the vendor a great shot to top the record 12.1 million smartphones it shipped in the second quarter. The popular smartphone maker currently expects to ship 13.5 million handsets in the September quarter, its CEO says. Chou also stated that all of the devices HTC launches in the third quarter will be middle or high-end models, which will likely help the average selling price of HTC phones ...

HTC clarifies how the unlocking bootloader procedure will work
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTC
It’s funny, HTC makes some of the best Android devices on the market, from a specification and build quality perspective, but then they molest Google’s mobile operating system with their Sense overlay because they somehow think that as a hardware maker they understand software better than Google engineers. They then reach out to the community and ask them what they want in future HTC devices, and the community unanimously agrees that they need an unlocked bootloader, which in layman’s terms is the capability to install a different version of Android on your phone because you can’t stand the default configuration. HTC agrees to the demands and portray themselves as heros for listening to thei...

Verizon retiring the Samsung Fascinate
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungVerizon WirelessFascinate
The Samsung Fascinate has apparently reached End of Life with Verizon, as it has a telling stamp "Retired" on the listing, and has disappeared from the online store.
Verizon's Samsung Galaxy S version that was the Fascinate was one of the best Android handsets you can get on Big Red at the time it hit shelves last year. It had a good run, if we don't count some bugs and the belated Froyo update, plus it is expected to receive Gingerbread as well, but now it has to move over and hail a new king.
Hopefully this Samsung Fascinate retirement only means that the Samsung Galaxy S II version for Verizon is nearing its announcement and launch. We've heard rumors about the handset being called bot...

U.S. broadband actually approaches advertised speeds
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNetworking Devices
4G is a hot topic here on BGR and as such, we’ve likely become more numb than we should when it comes to advertised data speeds. We’re so used to seeing “theoretical limits” that are so far from reality we just chuckle and move along. The wireline broadband industry, however, is a different beast. According to a study recently conducted by the Federal Communications Commission, major broadband Internet service provides in the U.S. deliver data speeds that are generally between 80% and 90% of the speeds they advertise. The Associated Press reports that the FCC’s study measured data speeds delivered to thousands of U.S. broadband subscribers this past March from 13 of the nation’s top ISPs inc...

Voice texting demoed for Nokia Windows Phone, Mango to have voice map navigation as well
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftNOKIAWindows Phone 7
While it's probably nothing Vlingo doesn't do already, the head of Nokia US has demonstrated voice texting while driving for a briefing seminar at the Center for Automotive Research.
The interesting tidbit here is that this tech will be available in Nokia Windows Phones and other Mango devices, and the Windows Team blog even posted how it is supposed to work while you are driving:
WP: [music pauses]You have a text message from Cody Pardi. You can say read it or ignore.
Me: Read it.
WP: “When will you be home?” You can say reply, call or I’m done.
Me: Reply.
WP: Say your message.
Me: “In about 20 minutes.”
WP: [The phone transcribes and repeats the message] You can say send, try again, or I’m...

Huawei Vision unveiled: stylish 3.7" Gingerbread smartphone in unibody frame
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHuaweiVision
The Huawei Vision might not have the guts to compete with dual-core equipped powerhouses ruling the market, but with a 3.7” and 1GHz chip powering Gingerbread it definitely has what it takes to sell 1 million. And that's the exact sales target of the Shenzhen network equipment and phone maker Huawei.
The Vision is among the company's first attempts to go head-to-head with the big names in the industry, but it also kickstarts a series of smartphones for the company that are expected to be better linked to the cloud. Huawei's upcoming Cloud+ platform is expected to come with functionality similar to what services like iCloud aim to offer: remote access to media and applications. That certainl...

The white version of the Samsung Galaxy S II is coming to Three and Vodafone in September. That’s like a month from now but it is well worth the wait. The white version looks even better and will definitely help you stand out in the crowd — not only will you have the Android smartphone everyone wants, but it will also come in white which is a rarity. So what do you say? Are willing to wait that long? Or the blac...

ASUS may sell 2 million tablets this year
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsASUS
Taiwan-based PC and smartphone vendor Asustek is expected increase its tablet sales forecast for the full year to 2 million units. Taiwan Economic News reports that the increased estimates would follow strong Eee Pad Transformer demand, as well as Asustek general manager Kevin Lin’s recent comments that ASUS was the No. 2 tablet vendor in Taiwan last quarter. Despite some reports to the contrary, most agree that ASUS’s Eee Pad Transformer tablet has been a big hit for the vendor. The company’s first Honeycomb tablet sold out quickly at retail locations when it was released earlier this year, and high demand kept shipments up for several months. ASUS also recently unveiled its second converti...

PlayStation Vita will miss Christmas shopping season in U.S., Europe
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesSonyPSVITA
Sony’ next-generation portable video game console will not launch in the U.S. until early 2012, Sony Executive Vice President Kazuo Hirai told The Associated Press on Thursday. Sony’s PlayStation Vita will become available later this year in Japan, but it will miss the all-important holiday shopping season here in the U.S. and in Europe as well. Some, such as Daiwa Securities Capital Markets analyst Koki Shiraishi, believe Sony’s sales will take a huge hit as a result. “That’s when you do half your year’s sales,” Shiraishi told the AP. “This is going to prove painful for Sony.” When it finally does launch next year, the PlayStation Vita will start at $249 for a Wi-Fi-only model and a 3G-equi...

Tiny Glass Lens Can Be Used in Smartphone Projectors
Like UnlikeFiled in: ProjectorsCell Phones
Technology still amazes me even though I’m immersed in it every day. It’s stuff like extraordinarily tiny glass lenses that can turn mobile phones into projectors that make me saw, “Sweeeet.” And just looking at the image above, I’m confident that you readers will think the same.
Look at it, it’s small like a granule of sugar, yet it could be embedded into phones to turn them into useful work or play tools. Here are the details on that little speck of glass, as reported by Wired:
At 1mm x 1mm x .8mm, the teensy FLGS3 Series lens is barely the size of the tip of mechanical pencil lead; and actually, it’s the smallest in the industry. Aspherical glass lenses like this are typically used in opt...

BlackBerry PlayBook Android Apps Delayed Until 'Late Fall'
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsRIM BlackBerryPlayBook
If you were hoping that your BlackBerry PlayBook would be running Android apps by now, I apologize for being the bearer of bad news. According to a new rumor, the “late summer” plan by RIM to get Android apps onto its tablet has been delayed until late fall. Some users purchased the PlayBook in high hopes of this feature – we even bothered the good RIM PR folks at pre-launch parties about the whole Android business. This isn’t looking good.
RIM is undoubtedly slipping in the tablet space, and arguably even in the smartphone arena where it once dominated, and this delay isn’t helping. There aren’t any solid dates, as it’s all based on a rumor that Engadget picked up on, but the fact is summer...
