Samsung demands 'optional' UI to get Android 3.2 on Tab 10.1

Samsung demands 'optional' UI to get Android 3.2 on Tab 10.1

Posted on Aug 04, 2011 by MG1

Samsung as part of the kickoff of its TouchWiz rollout for the Galaxy Tab 10.1 revealed that the update wouldn't be optional in practice for real users. Although owners will have the option of declining the custom interface, they won't have the option of upgrading to Android 3.2, Ice Cream Sandwich, or any other patch. The move would leave everyone preferring the original, stock experience locked to 3.1 for the device's remaining lifetime.
TouchWiz had been promised for the tablet from March onwards, but Samsung only clarified that it wouldn't be preloaded relatively close to the launch.
The interface brings some potentially helpful additions, like a more advanced quick control panel, live p...

Google+ has more than 25 million users hanging out

The Google+ boom looks like it's continuing (for the time being at least) with ComScore putting the number of users for the new social network as more than 25 million - with 1 million UK users.
In fact, ComScore reported that this was the total back on 24 July with a growth rate of around 1 million a day, meaning that Google's new pet could well have smashed through the 30 million barrier by now, making it easily the fastest growing social network ever.
Facebook took over 3 years to hit the 25 million figure, as did Twitter. MySpace's growth was, surprisingly, faster at just over 2 years. However, Google+ still has a long way to go to match Twitter's 200 million and Facebook's 750 million us...

HTC's legal battle with Apple has taken a new twist, with the Taiwanese giant announcing that it had filed an 'invalidation action' against the US company in the UK courts.
The action is essentially a challenge to another company's patent that questions the validity on grounds of lack of information or that the holder did not invent the product.
HTC Corp. Made an official statement to announce the action adding: "we don't comment on pending litigation.
"As a leading smartphone innovator, we respect intellectual property of others and will defend our own intellectual property as needed."

Microsoft reconsiders usage of Live.com geolocation data

Posted on Aug 04, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Microsoft

Microsoft has decided to rethink its plans to use the geo-location data of Live.com, following renewed privacy concerns amongst users.
Cnet reports that Stanford Security Laboratory postdoctoral researcher Elie Bursztein, who was investigating the company's ability to track where a laptop had been by analyzing Wi-Fi data stored by Microsoft's MAC location database, was one of the first to notice that access to the database had been restricted.
Privacy versus usability
This follows a similar move by Google, which limited the access to its geo-location database back in June, following similar privacy concerns from users.
Companies such as Google and Microsoft collate these geolocation database...

Government scraps website blocking plans, ripping legalised

Posted on Aug 04, 2011 by MG1

As expected, business Secretary Vince Cable has confirmed that the government will scrap plans to block websites, and significantly change the laws around people ripping content from CDs and DVDs they own for personal use.
Cable's announcements were widely touted a day before he made them, and have been backed up by the Ofcom report into website blocking.
Cable told the BBC that the original Act – passed in hugely controversial circumstances – could not be used to bring about a way to block websites.
Not tight
"We've discovered that the drafting of the original laws, which took place a year or so ago, were not tight," said Cable.
"There are test cases being fought in the courts, so we're loo...

The amount of bandwidth that all wireless carriers have for voice calls and data use is finite. There comes a point where the bandwidth just isn’t there to support more calls and more services in some areas. To help alleviate this bandwidth issue and speed the network overall, most of the major carriers and even some of the smaller ones are moving to carrier VoIP solutions to help spread the load of voice calls over to other parts of the network.
MetroPCS is set to become the next carrier to offer VoIP service to its customers. According to the CEO of the firm, Roger Linquist MetroPCS will start to offer VoIP service via its LTE network in early 2012. MetroPCS is right now migrating its SMS ...

Google just wouldn't be Google if it wasn't wringing out every last iota of performance from its products. The latest Chrome release is no different, ushering Instant Pages out of the dev channel and into the hands of the proletariat. The headline feature uses an algorithm to "guess" where you'll click next, pre-fetching and pre-rendering the result if it's confident enough. Mountain View says it's the only "high-profile" site to support the tech, but interested web masters can can partake of the instantaneous Google goodies by peeping the more coverage link below. Tweaks to the Omnibox -- which now returns URL and title history results based on partial queries -- and the addition of print p...

A new study by researcher Canalys indicates that Google’s Android platform has reached nearly 50 percent of the global smartphone market.
Canalys’ Q2 2011 smartphone market estimates show that globally, the industry grew by 73 percent year-on-year with over 100 million devices shipped in Q2 2011. This seems to align with a study from IMS Research that claims smartphones will account for 28 percent of handsets sold this year.

Posted on Aug 04, 2011 by MG1

Apple plans to launch two new iPhone models this fall according to a new report: an iPhone 5 and a new “simplified iPhone 4.” In a note to investors on Wednesday, Ticonderoga Securities analyst Brian White cites a Chinese-language report from Sohu.com in stating that Apple and China Telecom have reached a preliminary agreement. The site reports that the leading Chinese carrier will launch two distinctly different iPhone models beginning as early as the end of October — an iPhone 5 and a retooled, less expensive iPhone 4. According to White, the new iPhone 4 model could be “a more economical version of iPhone to target a broader customer base in developing countries such as China, allowing fo...

Our digital news stands are about to get quite a bit better. Time Inc. has promised that by the end of this year, it will bring all 21 of its magazine titles to the "leading tablet platforms". Although, by "leading platforms" apparently Time only means iOS, Android and WebOS. Sorry, BlackBerry and non-existent Windows tablet users.
The best part about this news is that Time has promised that the magazines will not simply be scans of the print versions, but will be apps designed specifically for each platform. Currently, only Sports Illustrated is being released on multiple platforms, while Time, People and InStyle are all iPad only. The other 17 titles on the way are: All You, Coastal Livin...

RIM's BlackBerry Curve 9360 outed -- is this Apollo?

Posted on Aug 04, 2011 by MG1

Did RIM forget this budget entry update, or was it pushed aside for this morning's announcements of its higher-end BlackBerry brothers? No matter the case, OneMobileRing got a hands-on with the Curve 9360, and it looks like this portrait QWERTY could be following in its brethren's OS 7 footsteps. Shots of the device reveal a Tour-like chrome trim, optical trackpad and the requisite micro-USB port for your charging / connectivity needs. A pic of the device's open battery door also shows off a SIM card slot, leading us to believe that this may very well be the ever-elusive Apollo. Could we see this mid-end, GSM workhorse in T-Mobile's near future? Our in-house Ms. Cleo predicts a yes.

Malware on the rise for mobile devices

According to a new report by mobile security firm Lookout, malware for mobile devices is more prevalent than ever before, and users are much more likely to encounter it than in the past. One usually thinks of Android when they hear about mobile malware, but those using iOS devices can be just as vulnerable if they do not regularly install Apple's software updates, which studies suggest many do not.
Lookout's report, which aggregated data from 700,000 apps and 10 million devices that are on its Mobile Threat Network, found that malware is increasing in both web-based and app-based situations. The data shows that Android users are 2.5 times more likely to encounter malware now than they were j...

Google: Apple, Microsoft are trying to 'strangle' Android with patents instead of competing

Posted on Aug 04, 2011 by MG1

Apple and Microsoft are playing dirty, according to a new blog post by Google’s Senior Vice President and Chief Legal Officer David Drummond. Instead of attempting to build innovative products and features, Drummond says Apple and Microsoft are content with filing repeated patent complaints in an attempt to impede Android’s rapid growth. Apple, Microsoft and others are carrying out “a hostile, organized campaign against Android by Microsoft, Oracle, Apple and other companies, waged through bogus patents,” Drummond wrote in his post. “They’re doing this by banding together to acquire Novell’s old patents (the “CPTN” group including Microsoft and Apple) and Nortel’s old patents (the ‘Rockstar’...

Toshiba outs software update for the Thrive that fixes its deep sleep issue

Posted on Aug 04, 2011 by MG1

Honeycomb’s very own sleeping beauty, the Toshiba Thrive, has been plagued by a mystical bug that somehow caused some units to not wake up once it entered sleep mode. Last week though, Toshiba came out to inform us all that a software update was in the works to address the problem, but more importantly, it was promised to become available this week.
Well, kudos to Toshiba for obviously following through because starting today, a new software update for the Toshiba Thrive is being pushed out as we speak. Rather than following the usual update process we tend to see with Android, owners need to run Toshiba’s very own “Service Station” app in order to download it. In addition, the update enhanc...
