Microsoft says Google is lying in its complaints about patent hoarding
Like UnlikeFiled in: MicrosoftGoogle
Apple sat quiet following Google Chief Legal Officer David Drummond’s rant yesterday, as it always does, but Microsoft was not content letting Drummond air his grievances without responding. Drummond on Wednesday penned a post on Google’s blog claiming that Apple, Microsoft and other companies are joining together to “strangle” Android with patent complaints. With all of the patent-related lawsuits against Android partners right now, this certainly seems like a valid complaint. Highlighting a specific example, Drummond wrote that the companies are “banding together to acquire Novell’s old patents (the “CPTN” group including Microsoft and Apple) and Nortel’s old patents (the ‘Rockstar’ group ...

HP TouchPad will get $100 discount this weekend
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsHPTouchPad
If our review scared you off of the HP TouchPad with webOS you may want to give the tablet a second chance, as buying the device from HP directly this weekend will net you a $100 discount.
The deal, first reported by PreCentral, says buying the 16 GB TouchPad directly from HP.com from Aug. 5-7 will get you the $100 instant rebate but it looks like the 32 GB model will still have the full cost. The retail store Staples will be doling out a $100 coupon for either version of the webOS tablet but that will also only last through the weekend.
Of course, one has to wonder why the sudden discount. The HP TouchPad was killed in reviews because the software just wasn’t ready and the hardware seemed j...

iPhone 5 Coming to China Telecom in October with Simplified iPhone 4?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 4iPhone 4s
We can add more rumors to the iPhone 5 pile in terms of an October release as we’ve just learned that China Telecom might be landing the Apple smartphone that month. Apparently, China Telecom has entered into a “preliminary agreement” with Apple to sell the iPhone 5 before the end of October, along with a simplified version of the iPhone 4. Perhaps the latter will be an 8GB version selling alongside with the iPhone 5, much like the 3GS when the iPhone 4 was released.
Why release two versions of the Apple smartphone? AllThingsD reports:
Targeting the smartphone market’s upper and lower ends like this could prove a wise strategy. “We estimate the high-end portion of China Telecom’s subscriber ...

Amazon UK has the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 on pre-order; shipping next week
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsSamsungAmazonGALAXY Tab 8.9
At long last, the European market is finally seeing the long awaited Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, but not to ruin the monumental arriving, it seems that we might soon see its slightly smaller sibling arriving in the very near future.
Always a consideration for those who don’t want to be trotting around with a large gadget, Amazon UK currently has the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 up for pre-order on their site. Interestingly, its in-stock date is set for next week on August 12th, which means that it’s coming much sooner than what most people think.
However, it’s surely sporting one serious price tag out of the gate and seems intent on catching the gaze of only diehard early adopters. Priced at...

Google has refreshed its mobile Gmail site for iOS and PlayBook OS devices with new higher-res icons and pull-to-refresh options. According to Google, these improvements make Gmail look sharper and feel smoother when accessed on mobile devices.
The message list can now be refreshed by pulling down on the list on all iOS devices as well as on the BlackBery PlayBook. Users of the iPhone 4 will now see higher-res icons that look better on the Retina Display when browsing Gmail in Mobile Safari. There are also new transitions that appear when moving between messages and menus in Gmail.

T-Mobile Q2 Results Show 50,000 Net Subscribers Lost
Like UnlikeFiled in: T-Mobile
T-Mobile customers jumped ship in large numbers during Q1 2011, perhaps due to the AT&T acquisition announcement in March, but losses seem to be improving for Q2. T-Mobile saw a net loss of 50,000 subscribers in Q2, which is down from 99,000 net subscribers lost in Q1. CEO of Deutsche Telekom Rene Obermann says, ““The United States remains a difficult market for Deutsche Telekom, but we see improvements compared to the first quarter of 2011.”
Perhaps T-Mobile’s figures will improve as it continues its HSPA+ or “4G” rollout through the country. For all the details, see the press release below.

Apple already giving the green light to iOS 5 apps
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleiOS 5
Apparently, the list of iOS 5-compatible apps in the Apple App Store has already started to grow. How do we know? Well, at least several apps have been spotted there with iOS 5 compatibility mentioned among their features. That includes the Mashable! app, which has it clearly written in its description and the Camera+ app, which cleverly makes a reference to “that upcoming OS That Must Not Be Named.”
So, now that we have a clue indicating that Apple is already approving iOS 5 apps, does that mean that the new firmware is launching alongside the iPhone 5? Although it does not quite guarantee that, seeing the next iPhone iteration launching with iOS 5 on board now sounds a bit more plausible. ...

HTC ThunderBolt getting Gingerbread this quarter
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsHTCGoogleAndroid 2.3ThunderBolt
The HTC ThunderBolt was the first 4G-enabled smartphone on Verizon's speedy LTE network, but since its launch not much has changed with its software – the handset continues to run on the quickly aging Android 2.2 Froyo, even though back in March HTC spilled the beans about an upcoming Gingerbread update. Well, four months later, it's still coming, but this time we have a particular time period for it – the third quarter of the year.
HTC representatives have been spreading the word about the update which will add Gingerbread tweaks and features, and fix some problems along the way:
“We are working hard to address the issues you have mentioned with future updates for the device. We are excited...

First quad-core Kal-El tablets pushed to October, smartphones to early 2012
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsnVIDIA
Remember Nvidia's quad-core Kal-El chip, also known as the Tegra 3? The one expected to roll out in August, you might wonder. That exact one is now pushed to make its official debut in October, while on smartphones it will arrive only in early-2012, just after the Holiday shopping season and around CES time in early January.
“Project Kal-El-powered tablets are coming this Fall, and phones around the CES 2012 timeframe,” NVIDIA confirmed for Androidandme.
NVIDIA's Kal-El has been delayed
That's a two-month delay for the chip on tablets, but if you're wondering whether there won't be yet another delay in October, you may be calmed down by the fact that the release date for the upcoming quad-c...

Pure makes the Move to your pocket
Like UnlikeFiled in: Portable Media PlayersPUREMove 2500
Is there a market for pocket DAB radios? Pure obviously thinks so as the digital radio specialist has announced the successor to the PocketDAB 1500 - the Pure Move 2500.
Packing both a DAB and a regular old fashioned FM one, the 2500 looks a bit like an iPod circa-2005 although Pure is stating that it packs "significantly improved audio" and "rich base" as a result of the silicone earbuds (with noise isolation) that it comes with.
Bass and treble controls are on board, and there is also room to store 10 of your favourite digital channels and 10 FM ones.
Playback time is around 14 hours thanks to the Lithium Ion battery and you can juice it up using the supplied USB lead.

iHome's SD63 headphones will satisfy your vague sense of nostalgia
Like UnlikeFiled in: HeadphonesiHomeSD63
Okay, so iHome's SD63 headphones may not be quite as "retro" as their name suggests, but there are certainly some design elements that harken back to a simpler time of beanbag chairs, black lights, and physical media -- a fact helped along by the inclusion of the old Soundesign brand. The SD63 Retro-Style Hi-Fi Stereo Headphones pack 40mm neodymium drivers, a volume knob on on the outside of an ear cup, and a coiled six-foot cord. They're available now for $50, which totally would have bought you a lot of Jethro Tull records, back in the day.
