Facebook Will Offer Up 50 Million More Shares Than Expected

Facebook Will Offer Up 50 Million More Shares Than Expected

Posted on May 16, 2012 by MG1

Facebook has announced that it will be selling an extra 50.6 million shares, at a price likely to fall between $34 and $38 per share, reports TechCrunch. That should snag them at least another $13.1 billion—and probably push their final valuation north of the expected $100 billion.
The extra release of 50,612,302 shares will be offered to underwriters to cover over-allotments. In total, that will mean that Facebook is now selling 388 million shares.
It' still not worth buying one, though.

Western Digital completes asset transfer to Toshiba

Western Digital completes asset transfer to Toshiba

Posted on May 16, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Toshiba

The FTC-imposed transfer of assets by hard drive maker Western Digital (WD) to Toshiba is now completed, the company announced on Tuesday. The move was required by regulatory bodies due to monopoly concerns after WD revealed its intention to purchase Hitachi's Viviti hard drive maker. Previously, Viviti was known as Hitachi Global Storage Technologies.
With the new assets, Toshiba will be capable of building 3.5-inch hard drives for consumers and business-critical applications. If the FTC didn't step in, it believed the deal would be uncompetitive in the industry, resulting in just two global desktop hard drive makers.

Android made Java-free thanks to 'XobotOS' project, but what are the legal implications?

Posted on May 16, 2012 by MG1

Software firm Xamarin has ported the Java code inside Android (over a million lines of it) to C#, creating an entirely freestanding operating system that it calls "XobotOS." C# — which began as a Microsoft project over a decade ago and now dominates non-native programming throughout much of the Windows ecosystem — is very close both in spirit and language structure to Java, which makes porting between the two a somewhat reasonable undertaking. To get it done quickly and make sure that Xamarin could keep up with Android's evolution, it automated the port using a modified version of the Java-to-C# tool Sharpen. "We knew we wanted to be able to stay up to date with new releases of Android," Xam...

T-Mobile gives HTC Sensation 4G users an Ice Cream Sandwich treat on May 16, Amaze 4G within weeks

Posted on May 16, 2012 by MG1

T-Mobile subscribers waiting on pins and needles for the day their HTC Sensation 4G or Amaze 4G will get its Android 4.0 update don't have to sit so uncomfortably for much longer: the carrier has just narrowed down the timetables considerably. The first wave of owners will get its Ice Cream Sandwich just desserts on May 16th, when Sensation 4G owners can push Android 4.0.3 to their dual-core 2011 flagships. Amaze 4G users have a looser timeframe of the "coming weeks" to dig in. Either circumstance will see HTC slap on Sense 3.6 like it has with other pre-2012 device updates, so don't expect a full One S-like Sense 4.0 experience. Do, however, expect to pay an extra $15 per month for hotspot ...

NVIDIA and partner acquire 500 wireless patents

NVIDIA and partner acquire 500 wireless patents

Posted on May 15, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: nVIDIA

NVIDIA has partnered with Intellectual Ventures in order to acquire roughly 500 patents owned by IPWireless. All the patents revolve around wireless technologies, including 3G, LTE, and LTE-Advanced. The acquisition closed on April 30th, but the terms of the deal weren’t disclosed. IPWireless will retain access to the patents royalty-free, with the portfolio split between NVIDIA and Intellectual Ventures.
NVIDIA is naturally interested in the patents now that the company is taking the mobile business seriously, hoping to incorporate an SoC with a compatible LTE modem next year. The deal could be related to that effort, but NVIDIA remained vague in the press release, saying: “These patents, a...

Blackberry 10 app tray revealed

Blackberry 10 app tray revealed

Filed in: RIM BlackBerry

RIM held back many of the details around BlackBerry 10 during BlackBerry World earlier this month — one of the most important of which was a very basic one: how do you launch apps? At a UK press event earlier today, RIM's Vivek Bhardwaj finally dropped that small detail. As we saw in our closer look at BlackBerry 10, the default homescreen is a set of "tiles" that represent a widget-like view of your recently used apps while you can swipe to the left to view the messaging app. As it turns out, swiping to the left reveals a fairly standard list of app icons arrayed in a grid. Compared to the clever keyboard, the camera, or the omnipresent ability to swipe into the messaging app, the app tray ...

Tired of the current crop of tablets mostly sporting Android and iOS? Anticipation is running high for next-generation tablets equipped with Microsoft's touch-friendly OS, which could prove game changing in the mobile space.
An un-named source "familiar with the device makers' plans" told CNet that the first wave of such tablets will show up in stores in November. The source described the schedule as being "tight" and that Windows 8 mobile devices won't be limited to strictly tablets, but over half of the ...

Crowd-sourced funding website Kickstarter revealed Sunday that a bug involving its private API allowed data from unlaunched projects to be accessible from that API.
Kickstarter engineers discovered the bug on Friday, co-founder Yancey Strickler (left) said in a blog post. "This bug allowed some data from unlaunched projects to be made accessible via the API," he wrote. "It was immediately fixed upon discovering the error. No account or financial data of any kind was made accessible."
The glitch occurred when Kickstarter launched its API in conjunction with its new homepage on April 24 and was live until May 11.

In need of a new computer, but holding out because you don't want to be saddled with a last-gen OS when Windows 8 lands? Worry not potential consumers, Microsoft plans to offer a cheap upgrade path to its latest and greatest if you buy in now. Well, not now, but soon. Starting June 2nd Redmond will offer a $15 upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 Pro. Mary Jo Foley first reported the deal last week, but wasn't able to put a price on the offer. Now, Paul Thurrott is filling in those blanks. For $14.99 any new PC purchaser will be insured against the coming Metro revolution. This is hardly a new tactic for Microsoft, which has used similar deals to try and stave off steep drops in computer sale...

This next Nexus tablet will be the first tablet actually branded as “Nexus” but will be the second released in close collaboration with Google made to show off the next big version of Android, the first being the Motorola XOOM tablet which showed off Android 3.0 Honeycomb.

New MacBook Pros confirmed to have Nvidia graphics

Filed in: ApplenVIDIA

Apple's updated MacBook Pro rumored to arrive this summer will feature Nvidia graphics alongside Intel's Ivy Bridge processors, a switch from the AMD GPUs in the current models. The news comes to us directly from a trusted source, and it's further corroborated by Joanna Stern at ABC News, whose sources also tell her that the new machines will indeed feature high resolution Retina Displays.
While we can't yet confirm what specific Nvidia chip Apple will use, a 9to5 Mac report from earlier today located references to the GeForce GT 650M, a 28nm chip built on the "Kepler" architecture that should offer similar power and performance efficiency to the well-regarded 28nm GeForce GT 640M. We recent...
