MSI Launches Slim 14

MSI Launches Slim 14" X460 and X460DX Notebooks

If there’s one thing I like about computer technology, it’s progress. Late 2010, the best you could get from the 14” sector would have been something like the discontinued Dell XPS L401x. That laptop came with GeForce GT 425M, 4GB RAM, and an i5-460M CPU for a base price of $900. In March, we looked at the ASUS U41JF, which boasted an overclockable i3-380M, 4GB RAM, and the same GT 425M graphics card. Both of those laptops leveraged NVIDIA’s Optimus Technology to give you a balanced platform, but even $800 seems steep compared to AMD’s Llano laptops, which is why we’re seeing upgrades and price cuts everywhere.

Motorola recently announced the Defy+, which looks more or less the same as the original, but has a 1 GHz processor instead of 800 MHz. We had an inkling Motorola was working on a successor to their last tough smartphone, so no huge surprise there.

Microsoft eliminating glossy Xbox 360 in favor of matte finishes

Microsoft eliminating glossy Xbox 360 in favor of matte finishes

Posted on Aug 17, 2011 by MG3

Glossy finishes on things that we touch a lot like notebooks and game consoles are nice looking – when they are clean. That is a rare occurrence though because as soon as you touch the devices the glossy finish picks up fingerprints and smudges and starts to look rough. I know I don’t want to have to start polishing my console to make it look good.

More behind the scenes Apple shuffling today, with good news and bad about two of the most anticipated iOS devices on the horizon. The iPhone 5 could well be on track for a September 12 launch, Engadget‘s tipster informs them, after word that carrier Telefonica will begin scaling back its current iPhone stock in time for that date so as to “prepare us for the launch of a new smart phone.” However, Apple’s supposed plans for an iPad 3 release in the second half of 2011 have reportedly been axed over high-res screen shortages.

Last week an infographic made by The Economist was floating around on the internet that we didn’t cover because … hey, there’s only so many inforgraphics you can shove in people’s faces before they get bored, right? Anyway, one of the key pieces of data in said graphic was that of the $178 worth of components that go into making an iPhone 4, $45.68 is what Apple pays to Samsung; that’s a hair over 25%. Now unless you’ve been sleeping under a rock, you’re aware of the court battles Samsung and Apple have been waged in over patents, trademark violations, and who knows what else. Just this week we reported that Apple has plans to shift production of their next generation A6 processor to Taiwan ...

Hackers target government website in protest, release user accounts

Posted on Aug 16, 2011 by MG1

On Sunday, hackers launched an attack against Bay Area Rapid Transit's (BART) website. The hacktivist group, "Anonymous", took control of mybart.org for approximately six hours, defacing their website and publishing the real names, emails, phone numbers, account names and passwords of 2,400 users. Interestingly, bart.gov itself was left untouched, however a few other municipal websites such as californiaavoid.org were not so lucky.
Sunday's "Operation: BART" cyber attack was prompted by BART's controversial decision to black-out cellular service along their transit lines, an act intended to prevent an anticipated protest from materializing last Thursday. The protest itself was a response a...

The Intel Upgrade Service: Once again charging you $50 to do stuff your CPU already does

Fans of creative nickel-and-dime schemes will love this: Buy an Intel i3-2312M, i3-2102 or Pentium G622 and it just isn't powerful enough, you can grab a $50 upgrade card. Enter the card's code online and hidden capacity in your chip will suddenly become available for use. Those with longer memories will find this offer familiar, because Intel did the same thing last year with the Pentium G6951. You may be peeved at the idea of buying the same thing twice, but remember that the company is only targeting the limited service at low-end consumers who want a little bit extra from their budget desktop. If you're interested in how much performance can be wrung from these chips, check out the sourc...
