Google CEO Larry Page explains reasoning behind Motorola acquisition
Like UnlikeFiled in: MotorolaGoogle
In a post penned by Larry Page on Google’s company blog, the CEO explains why Google decided to shell out $12.5 billion to purchase smartphone vendor Motorola Mobility. While Page had plenty to say about Motorola’s extensive history and its leading role in Android’s explosive growth, he also points to what many believe to be one of the leading factors behind the deal: patents. “We recently explained how companies including Microsoft and Apple are banding together in anti-competitive patent attacks on Android,” the CEO wrote on Google’s blog. “The U.S. Department of Justice had to intervene in the results of one recent patent auction to ‘protect competition and innovation in the open source s...

NVIDIA making money hand over fist thanks to Tegra
Like UnlikeFiled in: nVIDIA
Last week NVIDIA posted their fiscal Q2 2012 (not a typo) financial results, and while they don’t break down how much money was made by each individual product line, Jen-Hsun Huang (pictured above), NVIDIA President and CEO, said that the company’s guidance for the next quarter looks better than ever thanks to Tegra. Revenues hit $1.02 billion, up 26% from the same quarter last year, and in terms of profits, during this quarter last year the company actually lost $175 million. Today that number is in the green, at $174 million. NVIDIA goes on to claim that 10% of all Android devices that are currently shipping pack a Tegra chip inside. That would mean either tablet sales are better than we t...

Apple patent wants to get rid of those pesky fingerprints once and for all
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
What Apple surely has a lot of, besides cash and fans, of course, is patents. Sadly, though, only a fraction of them make it to a gadget that a mere mortal can get their hands on. When it comes to this innovation, however, we are really crossing our fingers in hopes of seeing it materialize as it would take care of an issue that pretty much anyone who has ever used a touchscreen phone has faced – fingerprints.
As some of you probably know, the iPhone 3GS was the first smartphone in Apple's portfolio to get an oleophobic coating on its display, thanks to which it had the tendency of collecting less finger smudge than an ordinary touchscreen. The trouble with the technology, however, is that t...

Firefox 6 "On Track" to Launch on Tuesday
Like UnlikeWhile you're busy grilling cow parts and getting ahead on back-to-school shopping this weekend, Mozilla will spend the next few days spit shining Firefox 6, the next major browser release slated to ship on Tuesday. And though Mozilla is known for pushing back release dates, there doesn't seem to be any cause for concern that Firefox 6 isn't ready for prime time.

Acer Iconia Tab A100 Released: The First 7-Inch Honeycomb Tablet
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsAcerICONIA TAB A100-07u08u
With today's introduction of the Acer Iconia Tab A100, the 7-inch Honeycomb tablet era begins. Vivek and Jarred looked at the new entrant's big brother, the 10.1" A500, and were left . . . well, a little underwhelmed. Some of their complaints are endemic of everything Honeycomb, so far: occasionally sluggish performance, potentially awkward form factor, bugginess. Some of their complaints, though, were fixed on Acer’s 10.1” tablet itself: questionable build quality, uncompetitive pricing, less than stellar viewing angles. So what does Acer’s diminutive tablet offer up?

BlackBerry Curve Touch 9380 'Orlando' gets pictured, tourists not included
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesRIM BlackBerryCurve 9380
These Blurrycam images you see above? Nope, not the Torch 9860. It's actually the BlackBerry Curve Touch 9380, also known as the Orlando. The phone's popped up on our radar screen once before as a render, with a few midrange specs revealed: a 800MHz Qualcomm MSM8655 processor, 3.25-inch HVGA screen, 5 megapixel camera with HD video, 1GB storage with microSD expansion and 512MB of RAM, and NFC were getting kicked around as possible features. We don't have any updates on the specs yet, but the forum member responsible for the images claims it's scheduled for a Q4 release, it runs on OS 7, and has two variants: the Orlando is actually of the GSM flavor, while the Malibu represents the CDMA side...

Firefox 8 To Stop Unauthorized Add-ons In Their Tracks
Like UnlikeIf's there's one thing we hate, it's Brussels sprouts. If there's two things we hate, it's Brussels sprouts and sneaky programs that automatically install add-ons into our Internet browsers. Turns out we're not the only ones. Those pesky unapproved add-ons have been a thorn in the side of Mozilla, who shoulders the blame when the invaders cause crashes and browser lagging. When Firefox 8 rolls around, unauthorized add-ons will be a thing of the past: the browser won't allow installations without the express permission of users.

Are Notebook Manufacturers Unhappy With The Ultrabook's $1000 Price Tag?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Notebooks
Intel's pumped about its Ultrabook concept. How pumped? So pumped that earlier this week, the company created a $300 million fund to help spur on the development of the powerful, low weight, long lasting laptops. The companies that are actually making the Ultrabooks, though, are apparently a little less enthused. You see, Intel wants companies to sell Ultrabooks for less than $1,000 – probably to make them competitive with the MacBook Air. That number's making a few manufacturers shift uneasily in their seats.

Microsoft patents new type of mobile slider, puts keyboards and screens on equal footing
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesMicrosoft
Patents are the currency of the realm these days, and companies accrue them however they can -- whether filing for their own or buying someone else's. Microsoft's no stranger to the patent game, and it's added one more piece to its IP stockpile in the form of a "moveable housing of a mobile communications device." A broad title, to be sure, but the patent essentially covers sliders where the keyboard ends up flush with the screen after it's moved. In existing designs, the sliding display gets in the way of pressing the top row of keys, and squishing the grid's size or fattening up the phone are the only ways to make space for fingers to press them.

Mystery Android Vulnerability Not Detailed By Prudent Hackers
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
Riley Hassell and Shane Macaulay were all set to go on stage at Black Hat and describe a few methods of hacking Android devices. But they never appeared: at the last minute, they decided not to reveal the vulnerabilities they had discovered. Why? “To prevent an unacceptable window of risk to consumers worldwide and to guarantee credit where it was due.”
