Micron prototypes crazy-fast 128GBps memory

Posted on Aug 26, 2011 by MG15

Semiconductor company Micron unveiled its prototype ultra-fast Hybrid Memory Cube (HMC) DRAM during the Hot Chips conference at Stanford University.

The prototype memory uses a process similar to 3D processors to stack vertically connected memory chips, which in turn allows them to function at 128GBps.

That's a truly mind-boggling speed, bearing in mind today's fastest DDR3 sticks can only manage a mere 12.8 GBps.

POV: GeForce GTX 550 Ti with 4 GB memory? GeForce GTX 550 Ti with 4 GB memory!

Posted on Aug 26, 2011 by MG15

I'm at a loss of words to describe what Point of View's 'point of view' could have been, when coming up with a GeForce GTX 550 Ti based graphics card that packs no less than 4096 MB of memory on-card. The company thinks that adding four times the normal amount of memory that runs at half the speed, DDR3 instead of GDDR5, could somehow spice up the specs sheet. Carrying the product code VGA-550-C1-4096, the card's DDR3 memory runs at 1066 MHz (2133 MHz effective) across a 128-bit wide memory interface, while the GeForce GTX 550 Ti runs at 900 MHz core. Its 192 CUDA cores are clocked at 1800 MHz. Point of view did not give out images of the card yet, but we understand it has one each of DVI, D...

RIM Launches Inexplicable BBM Music App

RIM Launches Inexplicable BBM Music App

Posted on Aug 26, 2011 by MG15

Though Slacker and Pandora have made the migration, the BlackBerry App World’s selection of music apps is pretty limited compared to competing platforms. In fact, the App World is found wanting in a couple different categories. But that doesn’t mean RIM isn’t open to improvement, albeit incremental improvement. That said, RIM today announced its BBM Music app.

It’s basically a subscription music app with a strong social element. For $4.99 monthly, you can have 50 different songs on what RIM is calling your BBM Music profile. From there, it really all depends on popularity. You have access to all of the music on each of your friends’ BBM Music profiles, so theoretically your selection could ...

Verizon passes on GALAXY S II, but "similar" Samsung phone launching soon

Posted on Aug 26, 2011 by MG15

Verizon Wireless is passing on the Galaxy S II smartphone according to a report in The Wall Street Journal on Thursday. BGR has confirmed with multiple trusted sources that this is accurate — Samsung will not unveil a Verizon-branded GALAXY S II smartphone next week at its New York City launch event on August 29th. Instead, Samsung will take the wraps off of GALAXY S II handsets that will soon launch on T-Mobile, Sprint and AT&T. We’re told two of those carriers will maintain the “GALAXY S II” branding but one may offer a unique name for the handset. BGR has also confirmed, however, that Verizon Wireless will soon launch a Samsung device with very similar specifications — as in, nearly ident...

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7, Galaxy Note, and Wave 3 are revealed thanks to Samsung's Unpacked app

Posted on Aug 26, 2011 by MG15

In its current state, Samsung’s recently available Unpackedapp for Android is pretty much useless right now except for the notion that it teases us with the potential of getting live news and updates when the company kicks off their event at the IFA trade show.

However, one person managed to do some snooping around and uncovered a trio of new logos residing within the Samsung Mobile Unpacked APK. In fact, we’re greeted to three very distinctive devices – the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7, Samsung Wave 3, and the Samsung Galaxy Note.

Verizon intros GoPayment credit card reader for phones, tablets

Posted on Aug 26, 2011 by MG15

In partnership with Intuit, Verizon Wireless introduced a mobile payment solution for small and medium businesses called GoPayment on Thursday. GoPayment will provide customers with a small credit card reader and a mobile application that allows businesses to charge credit cards using a smartphone or tablet. Here’s how it works: a business simply needs to plug the card reader into the 3.5mm audio jack of a tablet or smartphone. Cards can then be swiped and payments are processed immediately. Verizon Wireless says the credit card reader and application are supported on Android, iOS and BlackBerry. The GoPayment credit card reader is free with a GoPayment account and after a $29.97 mail-in reb...

Nexus Prime confirmed by Samsung lawyers

Nexus Prime confirmed by Samsung lawyers

Posted on Aug 26, 2011 by MG15

That another Nexus device existed and would launch as the first phone running Ice Cream Sandwich, we already knew that to be true. It's always been the specifics about the device that have been subject to the rumor tag, but it looks like at least one rumor can be smashed. The Nexus Prime is a Samsung device.

Rumor had it that Samsung was showing off the Nexus Prime at Verizon HQ recently, but that was just a rumor. This information was confirmed by Samsung themselves after company lawyers issued an injunction against someone who had obtained the firmware of the Nexus Prime. Samsung lawyers want to keep that person from sharing the firmware. In the letter, Samsung confirms that the device i...

DROID 3 gets one-click root, could extend to all Gingerbread Motos

DROID 3 gets one-click root, could extend to all Gingerbread Motos

Posted on Aug 26, 2011 by MG15

The Motorola DROID 3 is locked down no more. It was a good day for the root community. Earlier today, a root method was finally found for the DROID 3, and just hours later a (pseudo) one-click root method was created by Framework43 and psouza4. And, best of all, it looks like this root method will work on all Motorola phones running Gingerbread, including possibly the soon to be released DROID Bionic.

Of course, once there is a reliable root method, the only thing left is for some custom ROMs to be build for the phone. Everything is part of the cycle. Just about a week ago, the source code for the DROID 3 was released, and made its way to the XDA forums. That source code not only lead to t...

Motorola has started to email XOOM customers to alert them that it will begin to upgrade the XOOM with support for 4G LTE next week. According to Droid-Life, Motorola will start with business and government customers during a “pilot program” first and then will begin updating XOOMs owned by the general public. Customers will need to file an upgrade request before Motorola mails a package containing a pre-paid FedEx box and instructional material. Motorola suggests backing up the data on your XOOM before sending it in and said the process should take approximately three business days. Read on for an image confirming the details.
