Apple's board grants new CEO Tim Cook 1 million shares to lock him up until 2021
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
Apple's new CEO Tim Cook is keeping his fingers crossed that the company's stock can keep rising over the next five to ten years. According to an SEC form 8K filing made by the company, Cook received a grant from Apple's board for 1,000,000 common shares of stock with a current value of $383 million. In return, Cook is locked up as Apple's CEO until 2021.
Now before you start counting Mr. Cook's money, the stock will fluctuate and the executive won't even actually own the shares until they vest. Half of the award will vest in August 2016 with the remainder vesting in August 2021. Once the shares are turned over to the CEO, he still will have to follow SEC regulations. Generally, executives...

Apple prepping new video delivery method for TVs
Like UnlikeFiled in: Digital Media PlayersAppleTV 2gen
Brief remarks in an overview of Tim Cook's new position as Apple CEO have hinted that Apple is developing a new approach to TV. The company was cryptically described as making a "new technology to deliver video to televisions." What that entailed wasn't elaborated by the WSJ source.
The mention could be an allusion to a greater emphasis on streaming over downloading. Apple TV owners can watch shows without having to permanently download a copy, but they still have to cache on the hub while they play, downloading as if they were permanent copies. It could alternately include something beyond the Apple TV.

OWC outs cheap 60GB SSD called the Mercury Electra 6G
Like UnlikeSSDs are getting ever more popular as the price comes down and the storage capacity goes up. OWC has announced a new SSD that it says is one of the cheapest around at $129.99 for a 60GB device. That isn’t enough storage for most of us, but it would make a very nice boot drive if you have more storage to put in. I can tell you from experience that even loading most software to a bulk storage drive, 60GB will fill up very quickly.

Google TV UK launch given green light?
Like UnlikeFiled in: TVsDigital Media PlayersGoogle
Google is set to launch its Google TV service in the UK, with Eric Schmidt set to make the announcement at the Edinburgh Television Festival.
This is according to the Telegraph, which believes that the service is to launch in the UK within six months despite it getting lukewarm reviews in the US.
Google TV is a set-top box that allows you to watch online content alongside traditional TV channels.
In the UK this is nothing new; the majority of high-end TVs launched this year allow Smart TV functionality, where you can access web content and the myriad catch-up TV services available.

PlayBook OS version 2.0 leaked: is RIM really sacking BES?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating Systems
This one comes with a health warning: even if the leaked screenshot above is legit, it's easy to over-interpret. Nevertheless, it purports to show the account setup page from BlackBerry Tablet OS 2.0 and it distinctly lacks any option to sync with BlackBerry Enterprise Server or Internet Service. Instead, you're able to configure Exchange/Active Sync, IMAP, POP, CalDAV and CardDAV accounts, which suggests that RIM is switching to the same integrated email, contacts and calendar solutions as everyone else. Of course, it could be that the BES/BIS simply isn't enabled on this particular device, or that it'll be added in a later version of the OS. Then again, we can't help but recall those Colt ...

Humorous drawing of an HP TouchPad pops up for sale on eBay, bids skyrocket
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsHPTouchPad
If you haven't come across any wacky stories from the web lately, here is one that will likely put a smile on your face. Apparently, somebody came up with the crazy idea of drawing an HP TouchPad on a piece of paper and put it up for sale on eBay, presumably to see what would happen and to have some fun along the way. However, we doubt that the artist was really expecting to see the price of his artwork skyrocketing to the heights where it stands right now.
$90,100 is the current bid for the crude drawing of an HP TouchPad with another 6 days remaining until the auction ends. We wonder, however, whether these have not been falsely generated just to make the prank even spicier. The real deal...

Asus emerging as an Android tablet winner, reports $124 million net earnings
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsASUS
In a clear sign that it pays to be innovative, Asus reported a 5% jump in net earnings for the April-June quarter, compared to Q1. The $124 million it took home contrast with Acer losing almost twice that amount, and calling sour grapes yesterday. Asus also reported almost 6% net profit margin, which is its best performance in nearly three years.
The neat performance Asus attributed to steady motherboard, and better than expected notebook and tablet sales. The Asus Eee Pad Transformer has been one of the most popular Android tablets in the first full quarter with most major companies having Google-ified slates on the market. The target of Asus was shipping 300 000 tablets for the whole quar...
