Samsung S Voice ripped and available for ICS devices

S Voice has been one of the new features of the Samsung Galaxy S III that we've been on the fence about. It could very well be useful, but the problem is that the usefulness of a voice command "assistant" has yet to be proven. Sure, there are some useful things that can be done quickly with voice command, but overall it hasn't quite proven it's worthy of the immense buzz it gets.
Still, S Voice has the promise to be one of the better voice command options for Android. There are certainly quite a few voice command options available, but there is room for a leader if Samsung has the chops to take it. Now, we all get a chance to test out the S Voice software, because the wonderful dudes at XDA...

HTC has sent out a release that while short on words, is long on possibilities. The Taiwan based manufacturer says that some of its handsets which were held up by U.S.Customs thanks to ITC intervention, have been released. Some of the devices are now in the hands of the end-user. Based on what the manufacturer has said, this is going to be a long drawn out process as each unit needs to be reviewed by Customs and will be released after this inspection. HTC couldn't say if the freed devices were the AT&T HTC One X, the HTC EVO 4G LTE headed for a launch via Sprint or a combination of both.

Government blasted for 'cosy' relationship with Google

Google has an 'extraordinarily close relationship' with David Cameron's government, according to a scathing report in the Daily Mail.
The traditionally Tory-leaning newspaper expresses concern at the amount of meetings - at least one per month - between the search giant and the government since it took office in 2010.
The 23 meetings, which include three with the PM and four with chancellor George Osborne "increases concerns that the internet giant has the ear of the Government on a host of sensitive topics," the paper says.

For iTunes "jailbreak" is equal to a curse word

For iTunes "jailbreak" is equal to a curse word

Posted on May 21, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Apple

Jailbreak is a word meaning little for the general public, but often equal to freedom for hackers and nerds. To Apple? It’s as bad as a dirty word. That’s the only conclusion one can come to after seeing Apple censor the word on iTunes.
Apple censors curse words on its music and application store front, so that when they show up in your search results you don’t see the whole word, but only the first and last letter, with everything else replaced by asterisks.
Interestingly, though, with “jailbreak” not all results are censored but only a select few. TV shows and books seem to still appear uncencsored, unlike songs. Adding even more to the confusion, is the fact that the censorship doesn’t ap...

China clears Google acquisition of Motorola, eliminates last barrier to Googorola bliss

The final significant roadblock to Google's buyout of Motorola has been cleared, as Chinese regulators have just given their rubber stamp. Their approval follows a few months after the simultaneous American and European clearances, and virtually all that's left now is to formally close the deal and start integrating the two mobile giants. It might still come too late for the combined entity to present a united front at Google I/O, but at least they won't have any awkward glances at each other across the room. We're just trying to decide on whether or not Googorola is the best pet name for the loving, $12.5 billion-dollar Android union.

Amazon Kindle Fire with ads on the horizon

Amazon Kindle Fire with ads on the horizon

Posted on May 21, 2012 by MG1

Amazon is reportedly meeting with advertisers to pitch the idea of welcome screen ads on its popular Kindle Fire tablet. The retail giant is asking $600,000 for prime placement on the slate, according to a report from AdAge. Amazon currently offers its entire range of Kindle eReaders with advertisements that appear on the devices’ screen savers. Customers who opt to purchase a Kindle with ads enjoy discounts of between $30 and $50 off the purchase price of the devices; if Amazon carries the same model over to its Kindle Fire, the end-user cost of the tablet could drop by as much as 25% to $149. Following an explosive launch quarter that saw Amazon’s Kindle Fire take an estimated 14% of the g...

ITC bans Motorola mobile devices for infringing Microsoft patent (updated: MMI responds)

ITC bans Motorola mobile devices for infringing Microsoft patent (updated: MMI responds)

At the end of last year, an Administrative Law Judge issued an initial ruling that Motorola's mobile devices infringe a bit of Microsoft's IP. Now, the Commission has affirmed that decision and issued an exclusion order to ban Moto's offending devices from importation into the US. In case you weren't aware, the four patent claims at issue generally cover technology for scheduling meetings over email using a mobile device. So, unless Motorola removes the feature, pays for a license or whips up a workaround Microsoft's patent in short order, its inbound RAZRs, Droid 4s, Bionics and other offending handsets will be stuck in customs alongside HTC's One X and EVO 4G LTE -- that is, unless Obama s...

Security vulnerability found with the ZTE Score M can allow others to control the device

Posted on May 21, 2012 by MG1

Oh my goodness people! We really need to sound the alarms because a recent vulnerability was uncovered with the ZTE Score M for MetroPCS, which enables some unwanted individuals to gain control of the handset. Well, that’s the bad news of course, especially to those owners stateside, but seeing that the Score M isn’t necessarily the shining stallion in the stable, it’s not going to stir up a whole lot of things.
Nonetheless, it’s a security vulnerability that we’re talking about over here. Actually, it was first discovered by Dmitri Alperovitch of CrowdStrike, who is a co-founder of the cybersecurity firm, and from the way he sees it, it could’ve been due to poor development. Well, it’s eith...

Nokia sells their New York office for $12 million

Posted on May 18, 2012 by MG1

Nokia has had an office in White Plains, New York since 2005. Roughly 300 people worked there, and their job was to make the Finnish handset vendor relevant in the United States. They obviously failed to do that, so now the office is being sold to the tune of $12 million. That sounds like a lot, but Nokia invested $30 million into that building to make it look very … Scandinavian. Michael Rao, the guy who helped, Histogenetics, a biotechnology company, buy Nokia’s former offices says: “It’s a great deal for 12 million bucks. The building is gorgeous. It’s so spectacular.”

Now, the model is available to be pre-ordered in the U.K. from Clove for a price of 238.80 ($379.60 USD). No shipping date was mentioned for the phone, which uses the Korean manufacturer's "Floating Mass Display Technology" for a slimmer appearance.
