Mobile security researchers present Android Malware Genome Project at IEEE

Posted on May 23, 2012 by MG2

Android's openness, combined with its popularity, has lead a few of the developer faithful astray -- with malware being a legitimate concern for the mobile operating system. To help combat the issue, Xuxian Jiang, an NC State researcher, has created the Android Malware Genome Project, which was presented at the IEEE Symposium on Security this week. The aim is to collect and analyse all the known malicious software, and share the findings so that more effective and preventative measures to be taken by the community. Jiang claims that the main drawback has been understanding the malware, and getting access to examples, something the project aims to solve. More than 1,200 malware samples have b...

ASUS bringing Zenbook Prime UX21A, UX31A, UX32A and UX32VD to the US, prices start at $799

Posted on May 23, 2012 by MG2

First the rumor mill revealed ASUS had plans to refresh Ultrabooks with Ivy Bridge and 1080p IPS displays. Then the company confirmed the news itself when it brought some new Zenbook Prime laptops out for a demo and promised they'd go on sale in ASUS' native Taiwan. Now we've got some splendid news for our readers here in the US: those fresh ultraportables are making their way stateside too... eventually. ASUS just confirmed it's bringing four models to the states: the 11-inch UX21A, the 13-inch UX31A / UX32A and the UX32VD. What's the difference between the UX31A and the UX32A, you ask? It all comes down to storage: the UX32A uses hybrid hard drives, while the UX31A packs an SSD. Meanwhile,...

Intel will see its processor house in 1 in 10 mobile devices by 2015, as it slowly claws into ARM's market. Intel is the new kid on the block when it comes to mobile processors, with British firm ARM Holdings all but dominating the market at the current time. However Intel is determined to produce mobile processors which are so good that Apple won't be able to resist using them in its iPhone and iPad ranges.

Share your drinking habits with a Guinness-activated QR cup

Posted on May 23, 2012 by MG2

The usefulness of QR codes is still up in the air, but drinking a glass of Guinness is a ritual that has been around for hundreds of years. Winner of a John Caples International Marketing Award, advertising agency BBDO's cup reveals a QR code when filled with the Irish stout — lighter colored beverages need not apply as the darker tint is required for readability. Once the liquid is up to the brim, the code can be scanned to download exclusive Guinness content and promotions and even send notifications about your pint to Twitter, Facebook, and Foursquare. The glasses were distributed in limited supply as part of a marketing campaign; widespread availability has yet to be announced.

Back in January, Kodak filed suit against Apple and RIM saying that the companies infringed on its patents. The digital imaging company filed the claim with the International Trade Commission, saying that Apple and RIM both infringe on a patent relating to the preview of images. A judge has failed to see the argument, however, saying that the patent is invalid, and that neither company violated trade laws as a result.

Anonymous Hacks Department Of Justice! But Does It Really Matter?

Anonymous Hacks Department Of Justice! But Does It Really Matter?

Posted on May 23, 2012 by MG1

Here's the problem with breathlessly reporting on every purported Anonymous hack the second it happens: most of the time, the breaches don't turn out to be a big deal. Take yesterday for example; after a self-claimed Anonymous hacker posted a 1.7GB torrent containing server files from the "Bureau of Justice" on the Pirate Bay, early headlines blared variations of "OMG! ANON HAX DEPT. OF JUSTICE!" Unfortunately (fortunately?), that's only kinda true.
Reuters made some calls and found out that the hack only breached a single Bureau of Justice Statistics web server. You're probably wondering the same thing we were: what the heck is the Bureau of Justice Statistics? It's a relatively low-profile...
